Abstract

In the early 21st century, technology paranoia, a negative aspect of technological growth, was prevalent, particularly in the United Kingdom. This social problem coincided with an increase in popular culture toward the consumption of fantasy fiction, with the dark fantasy subgenre being revived by Neil Gaiman's Coraline. This study explores Coraline through the lens of John G. Cawelti’s formula theory to reveal the strategies resulting in its significant societal appeal. This study analyzes the novella's intrinsic elements—plot, characters and characterizations, setting, and illustrations—to identify Coraline as a dark fantasy that effectively combines horror and fantasy formulas. The use of dark fantasy aligns with Cawelti's four hypotheses, functioning as a cultural reflection, cultural solution, cultural boundaries, and cultural innovation that addresses technology paranoia.

Abstract

This article builds on a study of the BlankOn Linux movement in Indonesia, examining how local open-source communities perform digital resistance through semiotic and ideological practices. Using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, Stuart Hall’s representation theory, and Antonio Gramsci’s concept of hegemony, the research analyzes community-produced artifacts, logos, naming conventions, website design, and documentation to uncover how they encode counter-hegemonic meanings. Data were collected through image analysis, discourse analysis of digital texts, and email interviews with community members. Findings show that BlankOn fuses local-nationalist values, such as the promotion of the Indonesian language and cultural identity, with global open-source principles like gift culture and collaborative production. This hybrid identity challenges the dominance of proprietary software ecosystems, positioning the movement as both a technological innovator and a cultural-political actor. The analysis reveals that resistance in BlankOn is enacted less through direct confrontation and more via symbolic strategies that naturalize alternative technological ideologies.

Abstract

This study examines the instability of meaning in the film Maleficent by deconstructing the conventional binary between good and evil commonly found in classic fairy tales. Rather than reinforcing moral absolutes, Maleficent challenges them by presenting a complex protagonist whose identity evolves from victim to villain to redeemer. Using Jacques Derrida’s theory of deconstruction and a qualitative-descriptive method, this research analyzes how narrative structure, symbolism, and character development disrupt fixed moral categories. The findings reveal that the film does not simply invert traditional roles but destabilizes the very foundations of moral storytelling. Meaning is portrayed as fluid, relational, and continuously shifting, emphasizing that identity and ethics in popular narratives are not fixed but open to reinterpretation.

Abstract

This paper explores the rise of edupreneurial culturepreneurship within Indonesian higher education institutions (HEIs), where students and faculty transform cultural production into entrepreneurial ventures, and intertwine entrepreneurial motivation with cultural a/effect. Drawing on publicly available data—university programs, national student entrepreneurship schemes, and online cultural initiatives—this study maps how Indonesian HEIs serve as incubators for creative economic activity. Case studies include Ritus Liyan initiative, ISI Yogyakarta’s art commercialization programs, and Universitas Ciputra’s entrepreneurial mindset. Findings reveal both opportunities and tensions in merging artistic expression with business models. The growing acknowledgement of entrepreneurial significance in multidisciplinary level, however, is not properly manifested with echo of Cultural (with big C) sensitivity. “Culture” serves as a paradigmatic underpinning that reminds entrepreneurs to go beyond numerical and/or quantitative profit as the sole indicator of success. Thus, this study contributes a framework for understanding universities as agents of cultural innovation in Indonesia’s evolving creative economy landscape and critiquing the semantic banality of the term ‘Entrepreneurship’.

Abstract

The life of Palestinian society in refugee camps is full of economic, social, and moral pressures that influence the way they survive and make decisions. This reality is also reflected in the short story Al-Qamish al-Masruq (The Stolen Shirt) by Ghassan Kanafani through the character of Abu al-Abd. This study aims to (1) identify the dominance of the id, ego, and superego within the character, and (2) analyze the inner conflict through the clash of these three components. The method used is descriptive qualitative with data consisting of the short story text and literature on Freud's psychoanalytic theory. The data were collected using the reading-and-note-taking technique and analyzed through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the id triggers impulsive drives, the ego mediates with rational considerations, while the superego demands moral obedience which culminates in an act of violence as a form of resistance against injustice. The conclusion of the study emphasizes that the clash of the id, ego, and superego within Abu al-Abd illustrates not only an internal struggle but also a portrait of the social wounds experienced by Palestinian refugees. This finding is expected to enrich perspectives on psychological crises in Palestinian literary works as a depiction of the collective trauma of its society.

Abstract

This article explores the representation of Tri Hita Karana values in Roald Dahl’s The Witches. By focusing on the Pawongan values as the framework for building good relationships with other people, the present study follows the interactive qualitative data analysis from Miles, Huberman, and Saldana in conducting the simultaneous process of the data classification, data display, and conclusion drawing immediately after data collection to ensure trustworthy results. The analysis revealed that the novel includes curiosity, courage, intelligence, loving, and responsibility as the values that could build good relationships with other people, as guided by the Pawongan values in the Tri Hita Karana local wisdom. These findings imply that although Roald Dahl's novel The Witches is written in English by a British author and set in England and Norway, the novel poses a strong relevance for readers with a Balinese background, opening an opportunity to introduce local wisdom through world literature.

Abstract

This research explores how gender inequality and resistance are portrayed in Ayesha at Last, a novel by Uzma Jalaluddin. The main character, Ayesha, is a Muslim woman living in Canada who faces social pressure to follow traditional gender roles. Using Mansour Fakih’s theory, the research identifies different forms of gender inequality in Ayesha’s life, such as stereotypes, subordination, symbolic violence, marginalization, and double burden. At the same time, using bell hooks’ theory of feminist empowerment, the research also shows how Ayesha resists these pressures. She expresses her voice, chooses her career, wears the hijab with pride, and makes personal decisions based on her values. The method used is close textual analysis (CTA), focusing on the language and actions in the novel. This research aims to show that even small, everyday choices can be powerful acts of resistance, especially for Muslim women living in diaspora communities. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of how literature can reflect and challenge gender injustice.

Abstract

If Anything Happens I Love You (2020) is a poignant animated short film that captures the overwhelming grief of parents who lose their child to a school shooting. This study analyzes the film using Roland Barthes’ visual semiotic theory, focusing on how signs within the film—particularly shadows, objects, and color—convey deeper emotional and ideological meanings. Through Barthes’ concepts of denotation, connotation, and myth, the analysis reveals that visual elements in the film serve not only as narrative tools but also as symbolic representations of trauma, memory, and the cultural construction of loss. Shadows embody internal emotional conflict, objects transform into memory vessels, and color evokes psychological states, all contributing to a layered storytelling experience. The findings suggest that the film utilizes visual semiotics to naturalize complex ideologies of grief and remembrance, allowing viewers to engage emotionally with a difficult subject through powerful, non-verbal communication.

Abstract

The increase in young adult speculative fiction raises the issue of child characters being treated as expendable commodities by those in power. One work in which this issue is prominent is Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games series. Using the conceptual definition of commodification according to Mosco’s (2009) political economy of communication theory and DeJaeghere, McCleary, and Josić’s (2016) concept of youth agency, this textual analysis on The Hunger Games series aims to understand how child commodification is represented in the side characters and how it affects their agency in adulthood. Child commodification in The Hunger Games serves two main purposes: entertainment, as seen in Finnick Odair, and government control, as seen in Haymitch Abernathy. Finnick remains a victim of commodification as an adult, which limits his agency. Meanwhile, the adult Haymitch becomes an agent of commodification, thus his agency is unrestricted.
