Abstract

This paper describes about the issue of determining the beginning of the month of Qamariyah according to the government perspective. This study is important because it is related to the dynamics of the determination of the beginning of the Qamariyah month which is quite complex. In the history of determining the beginning of the month of Qamariyah in Indonesia, there was a recurring difference in determining the beginning of the month of Qamariyah. This condition is motivated by a concept that is understood and embraced by the Indonesian people which refers to two large patterns between the use of computation and rukyat (seeing the moon). Moreover, the pattern of understanding of community organizations. In the concept of computation is divided  into patterns and techniques used, such as urfi computation, true computation. In the context of this difference, essentially the government has been present to bridge the difference in the results of the determination of the beginning of the Qamariyah month from the rukyat and computation techniques with itsbat hilal. This concept actually to concocts two major view between computation (hisab) and rukyat with the specified criteria

Abstract

Research on reconstruction on the role of Tuan Guru (teacher) in the prevention and eradication of drugs in Lombok is field research using a qualitative research approach. This study aims to explore three critical issues. First, it analyzes the role of Tuan Guru in Lombok society. Second, it explains the reconstruction format of Tuan Guru as the efforts of preventing and eradicating drugs. Third, it describes the impact of the reconstruction role of Tuan Guru on drug prevention and eradication efforts. The findings elucidate that first: the roles of Tuan Guru in the Lombok Community were: 1) as an Ulama, 2) as a social problem controller or supervisor, 3) as an innovator of change towards betterness, 4) as a supporter of community independence. Second, the formats of reconstruction roles which were carried out in the efforts of preventing and eradicating drugs were as follows: 1) carry out a personal approach mechanism, 2) enforce a real action, 3) serve a counseling activity, 4) empower the community economy. Third, the roles played by Tuan Guru in preaching to deal with the drug problem were found to be very effective. Tuan Guru had succeeded in eliminating drug effects on the young generation. This could be proven as the number of drug cases decreases as reported by the drug investigation directorate of Lombok Barat.

Abstract

Among the most significant impact of the ongoing conflict in Aceh is the weakening of law enforcement in society. Indeed, thius result is emergence of what is known as ‘people court” (pengadilan rakyat). According to the information provided by the Human Rights Commission of Aceh Branch (FP HAM), there were at least eighteen cases of people court that took place in the region within the period between September 1999 and January 2001. Indeed, this is an interesting phenomenon to be studied, especially when it is seen from Islamic legal perspective. As it is known, in Islam both formal and informal institutions are to play their significant roles in maintaining law and moral order, a concept discussed under the topic of wilayat al-tahkim. However, this study shows that the Acehnese cases are indeed far from the Islamic judicial system.

Abstract

This paper examines the phenomenon of Islamic radicalism and the contribution of Nurcholish Madjid in the context of de-radicalization. Islamic radicalism has rapidly developed a few years ago. This phenomenon has conduced widespread public anxiety. Various de-radicalization efforts have been carried out, but have not shown results as expected. In this framework, the offer of a de-radicalization strategy is important to be implemented. Nurcholish Madjid has a serious attention to the issue of both Islamic radicalism and de-radicalization. In case radical Islamic communities are not given adequate attention, the future of Indonesia as a pluralistic nation is threatened because it does not provide a conducive sphere for the development of various kinds of diversity.

Abstract

This study is an effort to look deeper into the movement to strengthen ethnic identity in Singkil, Aceh. Singkil is one of the border districts of Aceh, and is actually affiliated with the meaning of an area that is inhabited by cross-ethnic and religious communities. So far, the Singkil community has identified itself on a territorial basis; pesisir and hulu. The Singkil Pesisir community is characterized by the use of the Malay-Minang language and settling along the coast. As for the hulu community, they are often identified as part of Pakpak and Alas because they use the kampung language (similar to the Pakpak language), most of whom live on the edge of the Singkil river. Even so, in the last half decade, discourse emerged through a cultural movement initiated by a handful of elite hulu communities, by campaigning for the Singkel (original) term, accompanied by the rejection of Pakpak label as the identity of Singkel as self identity. The question arises as to why ethnic identity strengthens in the midst of the Singkil community's communal life, which should be integrated in one regional identity. The purpose of this study is to measure descriptively the strengthening of ethnic identity in Singkil Regency. The research method used is qualitative with a grounded research approach. Data was also collected through reading related to the study of identity and the Singkil community. The results of the study indicate, if the awareness of ethnic identity strengthens amid the diversity of the Singkil community due to several factors; socio-political, religious, economic conditions and denial of identification of outsiders to the Singkil hulu identity are Pakpak sub-ethnic groups which are seen as degrading.

Abstract

Religion is a principle that has been taught since the early age. Therefore, religion is difficult to change and even contributes to form one’s soul. However, it does not mean that one’s religious understanding or religion cannot change. Religious change, which is often synonymous with religious conversion, can be considered as the transfer of mażab (schools) or religious beliefs, such as from Nahdlatul ’Ulama (NU) to Majelis Tafsir Al-Qur’an (MTA). To explain that phenomenon, this study is conducted based on three main issues: the process of conversion from NU to MTA, the basis of its rationality, and further implications. Those issues are examined using qualitative research method, applying phenomenological approach. The following results are the research’s findings: changes on understanding from NU to MTA are often caused by one’s psychological factors, while its complementer is caused by social factors. The process of the changes does not happen suddenly, but gradually with the basis of rationality. There are seven phases of the conversion from NU to MTA, namely curiosity and crisis, quest, encounter, interaction, commitment, consequences, and deployable agent. Meanwhile, its basis of rationality consists of clarity and certainty of the basis of Islam, obedience to Al-Qur’an and al-Hadiṡ, and egalitarianism. The phenomenon of conversion may result in counterproductive effects, such as verbal violence towards the perpetrator and social exclusion. Thus, to avoid conflict, one of the important things to do is to give tasamuh education to the moslem community so that they are willing to accept differences wisely.

The results showed that news about radical "ISIS" included in the category of news construction that was emotional, sadistic, provocative and without confirmation. In addition, the quality of reporting often adorns with words that appear hyperbole and bombastic, the coverage is less profound and changes in a matter of minutes. The trend of Tempo.co and Republika.co.id dramatizes and exaggerates what happens in conflict areas by using connoted language rather than language that has a literal meaning. Then it has not fulfilled the principle of impartiality of news which can be seen from the neutrality and balance of news that determines the quality of reporting.

Abstract

The story of the Islamic conquest of Egypt is one of the most exciting episodes of Egyptian history. Not because of the events and battles that accompanied the conquest, but rather because of the enormous effects and developments that have resulted in the history of Egypt and its people in terms of religion, language, culture,  etc. As for the march of conquest, the conduct of armies, and the war against the soldiers, they were subjected to many statements by historians, and there were conflicting reports about the conquest of Egypt, and was this conquest reconciled with a covenant, or by force? The way Egypt was conquered went in a way that contrasts with its conquests in the City of Shams and others. Also, the march of opening Egypt was subjected to multiple suspicions and myths that have no basis, some were able to attach to the history of the Islamic conquests of Egypt, but Allah defended the conquests through the writings of Muslim and non-Muslim scholars. This paper comes to reveal aspects of greatness in Islamic tolerance with the Christians of Egypt, which was their main reason for converting to Islam.  This study used the historical, critical and analytical method to present facts and discuss ideas. Among the most important results: the proof of tolerance in theory and in reality concerning the conquest of Egypt, the conversion of Egyptians to Islam because of its grace and ease, and rejecting the myth of the march of the Islamic conquest of Egypt from the beginning to the end.

Abstract

This research paper analyzes the religious phenomenon of culture in Modjokuto or Pare, where Geertz carried out his thesis on the "Religion of Java." Although there are many pesantrens in Modjokuto, there is still a religious tradition associated with Kejawen as a local belief, particularly among rural Muslim farmers. Javanese mysticism, however, plays an important part in muslim abangan. Some rural villages in Modjokuto, both NU and Muhammadiyah, are not very distinct in religious tradition. They have performed slametan, tahlilan, and ziarah as religious rituals. Kejawen's teachings are more observed by traditionalist Moslems in Modjokuto, who commonly refer to abangan as the categorization of Islam in Java. Some claim that abangan refers to the proletarian class and former followers or founders of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI). Some also said that Islam abangan means adherents of the teachings of Sunan Kalijaga, Syech Siti Jenar, and all the descendants of Sufi masters. In addition, we cannot argue that since the reformation of Indonesia, Islam in Java has changed and has gone forward in a number of ways. As a result, this research paper is trying to explore Islam abangan and its resurgence in detail. I recognize that the resurgence of Islam abangan in Java is somehow intended to address the increasing radicalism and Islamic sectarian. Using an anthropological approach, this research paper attempts to explore what Geertz examined in the "Religion of Java" after a half-century, which needs to be re-examined in the context of contemporary Indonesia.
