Abstract

This article tries to unveil the transformative power of the new media platforms that reshape a new pattern of political communication in our democracy. Furthermore, the characteristics of new media have contributed significantly to the renaissance of an enabling public sphere. The structure of new media transforms the restricted and deep-rooted top-down pattern of political communication into one that is decentralized and bottom-up today. There are, at least, five forms of transformation in the pattern of political communication as the result of utilizing various features of the new media technology, namely e-government,  political campaign,  citizen’s aspirations channel, and decentralized political education. Some trends of the application in the context of general election’s micro-political communication (citizen-to-citizen) are discussed succinctly, such as Vote Cerdas BDG, Orang Baik, Bersih2014, Check Your Candidates, Mata Massa, Rumah Pemilu, and Jari Ungu.

Abstract

The ideal society according to Jürgen Habermas is no longer classless society as idealized by Karl Marx, but a society in which each member could freely talk about their ideas regarding public life, without the fear of being repressed by certain parties. For Habermas, the class struggle is not merely about opposition, but begun by identification instead. This is the root of all Habermas’ ideas of public sphere. This paper will discuss the concept of public sphere in Indonesia, from the New Order era, to Reformation, and finally the digital age.

Abstract

The future of youth in any emerging countries has received attention from various stakeholders, including government, corporations and non-governmental organizations. The reason is that globalization creates competition and that competitiveness does not take a day to build. The concern also arises from regionalization, for example, the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community, whereas all individuals are considered borderless in regards to employment and specifically skills. How can countries, regardless of state-non state organizations empower youth by providing skills development? Accenture and Indonesia Business Links (IBL) – an NGO specifically focus on CSR -- partnered to develop an empowerment model for youth, by using a pilot in Karawang, West Java.  Through a simple survey and focus group discussions with stakeholders, Accenture and IBL produced a model that would be able to facilitate entrepreneurship and employability. Although the finding indicates that employability is still the main concern of youth rather than entrepreneurship, the model can be used as the basis for corporations deciding on which program to focus.

Abstract

The Indonesian nation, just like all other nations in the world, has a clear identity. The identity as a nation can be seen through their culture. The cultural heritage of this nation must always be preserved, guarded, cherished by their owners, especially by the younger generation. A national television media’s role, in this case TVRI, becomes very important in the effort to maintain, care for and love its culture. The role done by the Republic of Indonesia television media during the New Order was seen to be very successful. After the emergence of private television stations, the nation’s attention to culture in this country began to recede. Many of them were mostly oriented on business and give less attention to matters in relation to culture. Claims against of nation’s cultural heritage by Malaysian at some point in the past made us realized the importance of keeping and maintaining one’s own cultural heritage. These incidents should be a warning for the television media managers in Indonesia to take part in this responsibility. The appearance of popular culture, which is very popular with the young people of this nation, spread through by the television media in Indonesia is another phenomenon that needs to be given attention to. The presence of popular culture could displace one’s own culture. Invasion of popular culture is a form of cultural imperialism. It is also one form of another threat to the existence of Indonesia culture itself.

Abstract

Social media is a phenomenon in communication which is being most- discussed nowadays because social media phenomenon brings many great changes  and implications both in terms of how we communicate and the values related to communication, for example from the perspective of ethics. Benny Handoko‘s case shows how we need to use social media wisely so we are no longer entangled with a legal case. With the presence of UU ITE– Information  and  Electronic  Transaction  Regulation,  as  a  communication policy is expected to answer the need to facilitate the process of interactive media system, especially in the process of transactions using electronic data. However UU ITE itself gains criticism because of the overlap of the article of defamation characterin KUHP which eventually makes the guilty person gets more punishment; six years in jail or a fine of one billion Rupiah. This paper discusses the case of Benny Handoko‗s twitter from an ethics perspective in communication and communication policy.

Abstract

The aim of  this paper  is to analyze  the impact  of diversity in information  society as consumers. The society we currently live in is an information society, because our economy primarily depends on the production and consumption of information. Today the media are changing our  world in  many ways,  in the  rise of  the internet,  the integration of communication technologies, shifting media empires, new lifestyles, challenging career, changing regulations, shifting social issues and a new dynamic of power in society. The source of the dynamic of social change, the diversity impact and what are seen as epochal and global transformations in the structure of the economy, in social stratification, politics and culture is a technological paradigm based upon a cluster of innovation in information and technological paradigm. The transition to an information society is driven in part by rapid changes in technology such as computer and digital television. We should no longer think about the various media of communication as completely distinct entities. Why do the media exist? Do the media shape culture or does culture shape the media? Information technology and media are converging in the information society. Technological change is increasingly shaking up conventional media and now the ‘old’ mass media are responding with the innovation of their own. When new media enter our homes, media consumption patterns tend to change. In one survey of Pew Research Center, a quarter of Internet users said they watched television less since going online. Consumer’s differences improve or affect the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) among socially inclusive communities.
