Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop and assess the validity and reliability of an inventory on teaching strategies involved in promoting HOTs as well as to identify the most and the least popular teaching strategies used. The inventory is adapted from Gulistan et al. (2016). It is in the form of questionnaire distributed to a sample of 220 primary school teachers teaching Islamic education subject. The content validity is assessed by the experts and the construct validity is measured by Exploratory Factor Analysis. The reliability of the instrument is measured using internal consistence reliability, which is alpha coefficient reliability or Cronbach Alpha. Results of exploratory factor analysis suggested that 5 items need to be removed due to their non-dimensionality as they have more or less equal loadings on several factors. The instrument developed yielded high values of internal consistency as reflected by the Cronbach alpha values. Thus, the final draft of the instrument contains 26 items which are valid and reliable.  Even though the validity and reliability of the instrument are within the acceptable range, more data need to be gathered using a bigger sample size, and further analysis using confirmatory factor analysis could be used to explore deeper into the psychometric characteristics of the items before the instrument can be finalized. Furthermore, the findings of the study indicated that the most popular strategy used among teachers teaching Islamic education was the strategy for acquiring knowledge which introduces students more on memorizing basic concepts, while the least used strategy was the higher cognitive skills teaching strategies such as problem solving, collaborative learning and inquiry strategies.

Abstract

The growth of Islamic school education in Indonesia has been phenomenally rapid, affecting a new emergence of Islamic school in the country. In few years ago we only recognised two models of Islamic education: pesantren (boarding school) and madrasah (conventional Islamic school). The current wave of Islamic schools in Indonesia attempts to integrate secular education and religious curriculum in one curriculum. Interestingly, the teachings in these schools reinvigorate modern Muslim parents to get their children enrolled in those institutions. Nowadays urban society demands educational institution that effectively equips the students with ability in handling the challenges of rapid globalisation. Furthermore, Muslim parents enthusiastically welcome to this new trend of Islamic school in Indonesia.  Uncontrolled social interaction, moral and ethical decadence have risen concerns amongst parents about their children future. Hence, this challenge prompts them to think of solution for their children in near future. The establishment of educational institution which is being able to respond to such global problems is necessary. With a blend of modern and religious curricula, Islamic school is aspired to provide skills to children so that they are capable of facing the consequences of globalisation. This system is also expected to generate a solid religious morality as a platform for moral development for children to prevent them from getting drifted into negative consequences of globalisation. Accordingly, modern Islamic school is developed in response to these issues. This paper is in attempt to examine the presence of Islamic schools in Yogyakarta. Characteristics of each school will be scrutinized. The paper will focus on the discussion of their characteristics, aiming for responding to social concerns and parent expectation for their children to be able to survive amidst the turmoil of modernity as well as for the school in being able to bridge the Islamic way of life with global problems.

Abstract

The education Islamic studies play an important role of moulding and training the young and future leaders in their capacities as trained teachers. In order for them to discharge this role efficiently they need to be fully equipped with all the requisite knowledge of Islam throughout their educational career without any exception. However, the curriculum of Islamic education in Nigerian universities including University of Abuja is in dire need of improvement and modification because it has been observed that, Islamic education students offer limited courses of Islamic studies. Also the contents of most Universities curriculum are static; they are not reviewed periodically to meet the yearning needs of our changing society. This makes learning old fashion and irrelevant. The implication of this is that such students may not have the efficiency to teach their students as expected. The study recommends the review of the curriculum to make Islamic studies more robust in scope and contents to the students. This is necessary as it exposes the students to more knowledge of Islam than the current curriculum. The methodology consists of both library materials and field work.  The paper recommends that the Islamic studies curriculum should be reviewed to accommodate relevant educational contents capable of equipping learners with the skills, competencies and orientations that could make them perform excellently.
