Abstract

This paper elaborates the view of al-Ghazali and Hamka on the healthy soul in tasawwuf. Both have an interest correlation in understanding the healthy soul with different way of explanation. Hamka said that the healthy soul should be maintained by four qualities; shajÉ’ah, ‘iffah, Íikmah, and ‘adÉlah. In fact, these four qualities are known as ummahÉt al-fadhÉil or the mother of virtuous in the book of al-Ghazali. In fact, the way of al-Ghazali in explaining the meaning of ummahÉt al-fadhÉil is different with Hamka, so this issue is important to be discussed. This research is done by using the descriptive analysis method to elaborate both views on healthy soul, then comparative method is used to gain the different’s result of thought on this issue. After analyzing this works, researcher finds that Hamka was much influenced by al-Ghazali’s thought, but attractively he was succeeded to contextualize the meaning of healthy soul into Indonesian context. This produces the new explanation which is simple to be understood by all people, especially in the land of archipelago

Abstract

Artikel ini mengulas pemikiran al-Farabi tentang konsep kenabian dalam Islam. Masalah berawal dari adanya pemikiran yang menolak konsep kenabian pada umumnya dan kenabian Nabi Muhammad SAW khususnya. Sebagaimana yang dilontarkan oleh Muhammad Ahmad ibn al-Ruwandi. Ia mengatakan bahwa nabi sebenarnya tidak diperlukan manusia karena Tuhan telah mengaruniakan akal kepada manusia tanpa terkecuali. Dengan akal ini, manusia dapat mengetahui Tuhan beserta segala nikmat Nya dan dapat pula mengetahui perbuatan baik dan buruk, menerima suruhan dan larangan-Nya. Dengan demikian, nabi dengan segala fungsinya tidak diperlukan lagi. Bahkan, kitab suci pun tidak berguna untuk dibaca. Lebih berguna membaca buku filsafat Epicurus, Plato, Aristoteles, dan buku astronomi, logika, serta obat-obatan. Hal ini tentunya bertolak belakang dengan yang diajarkan dalam Islam. Beriman kepada nabi nabi merupakan hal inti dalam ajaran agama ini. Atas dasar itu al-Farabi bereaksi keras. Baginya, pandangan Ibn al-Ruwandi di atas tidak dapat dibenarkan, khususnya dari sisi akidah Islam. Sebagai al-Mu‘allim al-Tsani (Guru Kedua), karena prestasinya dalam menjelaskan dan mengulas-ulang filsafat Aristoteles, al-Farabi mengkritik secara sistematik pandangan menyimpang al-Ruwandi di atas.

Abstract

The orientalist assumed that the method of ahl ḥadīts is only focused on the sanad analysis. Beyond that, they also give a critic of the sanad analysis methods and assume that is problematic. Among orientalists who discuss sanad is G.H.A. Juynboll. Besides, he agreed with his predecessors about the uncomprehensiveness method of ahl ḥadīts, Juynboll also argued that the aforementioned sanad analysis method. According to him, the science of al-jarḥ wa al-ta’dīl -which is the most important aspect in sanad analysis was deeply problematic, the reason can be traced from two sides; the first, the narrators (al-rāwi) assessment standards are not objective. The fact is, more assessments are based on the opposite (regionalism); it’s mean that in the early days of the hadith narration there were conflicts between one region to anothers, so that the narrators of the region refused to narrate from another regions. For example, the conflicts occurred between the narrators of Medina and Iraq or between Iraq and Syria. Secondly, a lot the terms have evolved over time, thus there occured various meanings among them. Therefore, through this article the writer will try to criticize this opinion and examine the level of Juynboll understanding to the methods of ahl ḥadīts analysis, especially on the issue of al-jarḥ wa al-ta‘dīl. Afterward, seeing to what extent the actual accuracy of the criticism is given by orientalist (in this case Juynboll) to the method of ahl ḥadīts.

Abstract

The formation of a culture in a society, which is based only on one of the scientific dimensions, such as an idea that science is value-free, or that religion is merely a fata morgana, will result in incomplete culture, or even destroy the culture itself. It, on this matter, lies the responsibility of scientists together with other stakeholders to build the nation’s culture. With their expertise, scientists should choose and determine a strategy to integrate moral dimension into scientific ontology, epistemology and axiology. Ontologically, Islam recognizes the existence and truth of āyāt al-kauniyyah as well as āyāt al-qauliyyah and integrates the existence of the two based on faith. Furthermore, the development of the products of Islamic thoughts based on this philosophy form a paradigm system of metaphysical realism based on fundamental concept of tawḥīd (oneness) of the existence of Allah s.w.t., minds and the universe (monism). In the oneness of existence (tawhḥīd), what is meant by science needs a consistent formula in light of the feature of existential oneness. The nature of science seen in this light tends to trigger another scientific activity, i.e. the procedure of finding and developing sciences in religion, within which Allah SWT as a focal point of the thinking framework as well as a reference to the whole existential structure.

Abstract

This article tries to discuss the concept of de-westernization of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas and its relevancy toward Islamization of knowledge. De-Westernization is an effort which necessity to do to win the challenge in the knowledge field that caused by Western civilization nowadays. In brief, de-westernization is an identification, separation, and isolation process from the elements of Western in the body of knowledge. This process stood as the first step to treat the dilemma which is resulted by skepticism and relativism with Islamization of knowledge. However, Islamization of knowledge should be doing after investing the Islamic worldview and Islamization of language. Also should be identifying the elements of westernization before doing the de-westernization. Naquib al-Attas stated that the language is a reflection of the worldview of someone or some civilization. Moreover, language is put into the category of Islam according to its vocabulary. It should relate to vocabulary in Islam. The concept of de-westernization as a first step before going to Islamization of knowledge begins by setting Islamic worldview before because it has a big impact on the way of think. Thus, the writer tries to declare the concept of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas and its relevancy toward Islamization of knowledge.

Abstract

In the discourse of women’s liberation was hailed by adherents of gender equality, Hermeneutics has a significant role. It can be seen clearly by considering the function Hermeneutics deemed capable of reconstructing the verses (nass) which considered Misogyny or gender biased. One of the figures who hard enough to practice Hermeneutics as one means to ‘rediscover’ the rights of women in the texts, is Riffat Hassan. Riffat, with her efforts to try to re-interpret the meanings in the Qur’an related to the gender discourse. For Riffat, patriarchal culture that deeply ingrained was implications of hegemonic texts understanding. Women, for Riffat have rights and obligations in the portion of the ‘same’ in quantity without having to think about the logical consequences are present therefrom.

Abstract

Islam is not only religion but also a political and legal ideology that has been realized in a world of power and widespread in many countries to this day. Islam showed the whole culture that includes religion and state which is based on the concept of the state and the pure Islamic teachings. The relationship between Islam and the State in the context of Indonesian-ness has always been an interesting thing to be discussed. Mutual attraction between the Nationalists Islam and the Secular Nationalists still continues to this day. Religious life in Indonesia is unique. In the constitution that was approved since the inception of this state, is still being debated in the realm of application. The application of moral values perfectly into the goal for the state and statehood. On the other hand, the life of the compound causing some groups want to live in a liberal and secular. System based on their assumption, making Indonesia as a secular state can accommodate minorities. That will create an ideal state of life. However, the Indonesian constitution that exists today asserted that Indonesia is not a secular state.

Abstract

The characteristic of the liberal view is anti-authority, even to the scholar muslims or to the revelation, and demanding Islamic Sharia to adapt to the modern human rights. The authorities in religion (ulema) disagreed with this way of thinking, because it contradicted to the Islamic Sharia. For the supporters of religious liberalism, religion must be reinterpreted and if possible must be deconstructed. One of the bearers of the idea is Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im, a Sudanese Muslim thinker. He considered thatsharia (jurisprudence) that have existed before and done is a factor of setbacks and backwardness of Muslims today. Sharia is not something sacred (divine), because it is not a direct revelation from God Almighty. Na’im deconstructed an Islamic Sharia through the renewal of Usul Fiqh which has been established in the teachings of Islam. In this regard, he specifically deconstructs the concept of naskh in Islam, and offers a newconcept which considered as the answer to the backwardness of Muslims.

Abstract

Historical development of science in the West cannot be separated from the great ‎contribution of Muslim scientists. No exception in the field of mathematics, al-Khawarizmi, ‎for example, played a major role in the development of modern mathematics. It is precisely ‎able to be seen from the work of al-Khawarizmi such as science of al-Jabar in the book al-‎Jabr wal Muqa>balah. From Khawarizmi’s work, Mathematics becomes easier to utilize in ‎trade, mapping and distributing inheritance. Besides, al-Khawarizmi's contribution in ‎Mathematics is also found in Trigonometry and the discovery of zero as a number. ‎Furthermore, al-Khawarizmi described them in a more perfect way than previous period ‎of mathematics development. Al-Khawarizmi is known developed modern mathematics ‎today, and there are still many Muslim scientists who also contributed to an advancement ‎of modern mathematic such as, Ummar al-Khayyam, al-Hajjaj, Nashiruddin al-Thusi, Ibnu ‎Haitsam and others.‎

Abstract

Tulisan ini merupakan telaah pustaka pemikiran Mulla Sadra mengenai konsep humanisme spiritual dan signifikansinya terhadap eksistensi manusia di era modern. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui makna, prinsip-prinsip, dan hakikat humanis dalam pandangan Mulla Sadra melalui karya utamanya berjudul al-Asfar al-Arba’ah dan beberapa penelitian mengenai pemikiran filsafat Mulla Sadra. Dengan meggunakan analisa deskriptif filosofis dihasilkan kesimpulan bahwa konsep humanisme Mulla Sadra ditelaah melalui diskursus jiwa. Implikasinya, manusia mengetahui dan menyadari adanya aspek imateri dalam eksistensi dirinya bersifat menyempurna. Di samping mengetahui adanya aspek imateri dalam eksistensi manusia, konsep humanis dalam pandangan Mulla Sadra ialah mengkritisi pandangan filsuf barat, seperti Jean Paul Sartre dan Fredrich Nietzsche yang memandang eksistensi manusia berdasarkan kesadaran materi. Akibatnya, eksistensi manusia dipandang melalui sisi kebendaannya. Implikasinya, kesadaraan manusia bersifat terbatas. Di era modern, mayoritas manusia memahami eksistensi dirinya sebagaimana penawaran filsuf barat, sehingga mayoritas manusia tidak memiliki kesadaraan dalam menyadari dan mengetahui eksistensi dirinya, sebagaimana mestinya. Pandangan para filsuf barat terhadap kesadaran materi dalam eksistensi manusia menyebabkan kebebasan berkehendak. Kebebasan berkehendak dalam pandangan barat menyebabkan dehumanis, sebab mengutamakan aspek emosional dan hawa nafsu dalam eksistensi manusia. Hasil tulisan ini, memberikan solusi dalam meningkatkan kesadaran eksistensi manusia, khususnya mengenai makna, prinsip, dan hakikat humanis di era modern. Semakin sadar manusia terhadap makna dan hakikat humanis, maka semakin tinggi eksistensi manusia. Implikasinya, manusia dapat mencapai tingkat kesempurnaan dalam dirinya tanpa adanya batasan. Dari berbagai penjelasan tersebut, penulis memberikan hipotesa bahwa konsep humanis spiritual Mulla Sadra dapat meningkatkan eksistensi manusia sebagai solusi terhadap krisis eksistensi manusia di era modern.
