Abstract

This article intends to look at the latest issues of Philosophy of Science related to the ‎issue of scientific integration, especially those that developes in Islamic State University ‎‎(UIN) Malang and Yogyakarta. In some way, the scientific dynamics of UIN are ‎interesting to study regarding UIN’s success that has been done in building a new ‎scientific paradigm accompanying long-period process of institutional development from ‎Institute to University as its most crucial issue. It is understandable that such a ‎development is a very brilliant stage of scientific achievement recorded in history. The ‎scientific dynamics of UIN also continues to be in a spotlight along with the great ‎expectations -and even a concern- of the community. It is on account that in fact, the ‎development of any scientific paradigm connect or impact broadly on religious ‎understanding of general public. If religion (with all its teachings) is understood as being ‎contrary to science all the time, accordingly, it is impossible for science (with all its ‎characteristics and criteria) to meet with religion. Coming through an advanced scientific ‎paradigm, UIN reconstructs both religious and scientific understanding so that they can ‎meet and even negotiate. Moreover, the two Universities have developed new academic ‎traditions as well, characterized by development patterns in the field of research and ‎scientific works of their academic communities.‎

Abstract

Islam and faith are two important elements of religion. Disputes in the issue of faith have taken place among the scholars who discuss the existence and polemics in it. Among the well-known scholars of the Ahlussunnah wa al-Jama'ah, namely Abu Al-Hasan Asy'ari, argued that faith is a justification made in the heart and expressed verbally. However, most scholars disputed Asy'ari's statement about faith, one of which was Syaikhulal-Islam Ibn Taimiyah who said that faith is not enough with heart justification and verbal speech but must be accompanied by the charity as an idea of justification. With the differences of opinion between both of them. this article seeks to identify Ibn Taimiyah's attitude or view of Imam Asy'ari in matters of faith. Through the kalamiyah approach that uses descriptive methods and analysis of a number of findings are produced. That, Ibn Taimiyah denied al-Asy'ari's statement which referred to linguists as the basis of the concept of faith and did not rely on the arguments of the Qur'an and Sunnah. This is because the Sanad is not known for the statement if the understanding of faith is just then it is a depiction of Ahad and is not determined based on mutilated recitation, because there is no mention of an amplifier from the words of the Arabs. Whereas the mistake mentioned by Ibn Taymiyyah in the concept of faith al-Ash'ari, actually does not come out of the view of the Salaf scholars, namely that faith is justification in the heart and knows it, but that al-Asy'ari holds that charity in the concept of faith is something the external concept of faith itself. In addition, Ibn Taimiyah also contends with Asy'ari that faith decreases and increases decreases due to disobedience and increase because of remembering Allah and His Messenger.

Abstract

Al-Imam al-Banna al-Sa‘ati (d.1378AH/1958CE) was amongst the famous Egyptian scholars in the 14th century. Although mostly known as the father to the late Hasan al-Banna, he was also a prolific scholar in his own right. In the field of hadith and its studies, he has composed important works such as al-Fath al-Rabbani fi Tartib Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal al-Syaibani, Bada’i‘ al-Minan fi Jam‘ wa Tartib Musnad al Syafi‘i wa al-Sunan, and others. In addition, he was also the first amongst scholars to have successfully organized the hadiths of Musnad Ahmad into thematic chapters to facilitate the finding of hadith in the book. However, his scholarly contributions have yet to attract the interest of the researchers as their subject of study. Therefore, this paper aims to expound on this matter in a greater detail. In particular, its aims to highlight the little known biography of this scholar as well as his contributions to the field of al-Qur’an and al-Hadith and its sciences. The study employs the historical, deductive and analytical approaches in analyzing the relevant sources on the matter. It is hoped that the paper provides an important aspect of hadith scholarship as portrayed by this important scholar.

Abstract

Pragmatism is one of contemporary issues in Greek philosophy which was later developed by the number of modern figures such as William James, Webster and Charles Sender Pierce. Pragmatism is generally defined as a school of thought which considers everything based on every principle of benefit that it owned, knowledge for instance. Human seek the knowledge in order to make their life better. Due to the fact that pragmatism is built on the foundation that validity of an act and its value is evaluated from the advantages as its consequent, then everything shoul adhere to the principles. Pragmatism, in its progress, approves the harmony between the mind and human actions. Furthemore, the standard of absolute functions or benefits are referred back relatively to the subject. At this point, of we review the prgamatism from religion perspective, it could convey us to the relativism of truth. It can be concluded here that as an idelogy brought from the perspective of philosophy and religion, pragmatism should be strictly criticized from the view of Islam according to its negative implications toward religious understanding. This paper will try to elaborate on pragmatism chronologically, related to its contribution and relation toward Islamic Studies, expressing its principles associated with the perspectives of knowledge, akhlaq, and religiuos norms.

Abstract

The term wasat }iyah is always related to kindness, justice and balance. When juxtaposed with “ideology” the term becomes “ideology wasat} iyah,” meaning a way or idea of   thinking that is good and fair with an Islamic perspective. But an Egyptian modernist wrote a book entitled, “Al-Imam> al-Syafi>’i wa Ta’sīs al-Idiulūjiyyah al-Wasati}yah.” The author of this book is Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid, and everything written in his book contains criticism of Imam Syafi’i. Based on that the writer wants to make the book as an object of research that will be focused on Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd’s criticism of Imam Syafi’i from the aspect of wasat}iyah ideology. This study aims to counter Nasr Hamid’s criticisms of Imam Syafi’i. The author focuses his study on four aspects criticized by Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd to Imam Shafi ‘,   namely al-Qur’an, Sunnah, Ijma and Qiyas from the standpoint of wasati}yah ideology. The result is that the writer found that Nasr Hamid was wrong in evaluating Imam Syafi’i.

Abstract

The paper explores, that the issue of humanism that carries the idea of man as central to all of life cannot seen as a simple idea. Moreover, Muslim scientists brought up the idea. That is not a few of Muslim scholars in various Islamic universities are working hard campaigning in support disseminated this idea. Humanism actually as understanding of what makes humans as the main shaft in life is unknown in Islamic tradition. This phenomenon needs to get an adequate answer, to give a true description of its concept. In addition, this paper also offers ideas that in order to achieve the betterment of life, a Muslim does not have to empty himself of religion and God. Otherwise, religion and God should not be forgotten. A Muslim has to examine Islam as soon, trough the discipline has been handed down by prophets, and which has been developed by previous scholars, diligently an earnestly, so as the explore of the old heritage, is it expect to find new original concept to answer nowadays problems.

Abstract

This paper is intended to examine the theology of Abraham who is the father of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The three religions have debated on several issues and fought in several battles. The one way is to break the wall that stood around them to know the origin of the three religions. Here, Ibrahim is a single actor as a way to answer the similarities and differences of the three religions. The story of Ibrahim still inspires the believer of all three faiths to become good Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Because the Abrahamic ethic is to maintain the pure monotheism, that there is no god except Allah, without any interruption and intervention of paganism and polytheism. Generally, this research is based on the history of mankind, and focuses on the study of the Bible and the Holy Qur’an. Through this research, the writer found few differences and similarities in the Bible and the Qur’an about the life of Abraham. Firstly, that Abraham will be the patriarch of the nations and the major religions. Secondly, Abraham is spiritual journey which an inspiration for Jews, Christians, and Muslims in performing their religious rituals. Then, the writer also found that the theological concept built by Abraham is monotheistic (tawh}i>d) and totally (ka>ffah) self-surrendering (aslama) totally to the Almighty God; rejecting all forms paganism and polytheism.

Abstract

In the last decade, new creativity and new awareness of some Moslem scientists who proposed the urgency to interpret al-Qur’an with new approach appeared. One of the scientists was Abdullah Saeed. He sees that there has been a tremendous change in human history. Therefore, he thinks there should be efforts to apply contextual approach of interpreting al-Qur’an. Interpretive approach to the context in question is the interpretation of the trust that the teaching model of the Koran today can be applied by several methods in accordance with the conditions, so that the meaning of the content of the Qur’an that can lead mankind. Model interpretation of this context approach can be implemented through four stages; face word in the text, criticize and analyze the language and considering the context of the letter, meaning that first received and then continued by looking at the social situation and consider the meaning of what is needed at this time. With critical analytical method, this paper tries to explain what and how true interpretation Saeed context approach was realized. Although the idea of true interpretation is not the first time appeared nor purely of itself, but with all the advantages and disadvantages that exist, the proposal was interesting to be observed.

Abstract

Wayang is tradition contains phylosophical values and great teachings. For Javanese people, wayang is not only as performance, but therein the life guidance. At the beginning, wayang was used as a media for worshipping to ‘Hyang’ (God) about 1500 BC. It was also used as medium for spreading the doctrine of Islamic teachings. Because of the closeness of wayang performance in the people’s heart, Walisanga made wayang as one of their da’wah medium. Among the famous preacher (da’i) that uses wayang was Sunan Kalijaga. In order to researcher used al-Nahl 16:125 as a cornerstone in looking at the method of da’wah according to Sunan Kalijaga, namely methods of da’wah bi al-h}ikmah, bi al-mauiz}ah al-h}asanah, and bi al-muja>dalah al-ah}san. The researcher found that da’wah performed by Sunan Kalijaga was to modificate the figures and the stories of wayang to be filled by Islamic values and phylosophical teaching, as described in the five figures of Pandawa as the representation of five tenets of Islam, they are Yudhistira (Syaha>dah), Bima (S}ala>t), Arjuna (Fasting Ramadhan), Nakula (Zaka>h) and Sadewa (H{ajj), as well as the figures of Punakawan, which represented people’s life and the way to face its obstacles which has not been exist before in Hindu era. Its represented by Semar, Gareng, Petruk, and Bagong. Thus, the figures of Pandawa and Punakawan influenced the people to finally embraced Islam.

Abstract

Pluralitas dalam Islam diyakini sebagai sunnatulah yang dikehendaki-Nya. Keadaan plural yang meliputi berbagai macam golongan dan kelompok menyebabkan masyarakat harus dapat hidup berdampingan dalam satu lingkungan. Ketika hidup bermasyarakat tersebut, tentunya ada yang menjadi golongan mayoritas dan minoritas. Kerap terjadi, kelompok mayoritas bersikap intoleran terhadap minoritas, sehingga terjadi penganiayaan atau pelanggaran hak asasi manusia. Dalam sejarahnya, umat Islam pernah menjadi kelompok minoritas dan juga mayoritas di suatu tempat. Ketika berposisi sebagai mayoritas, umat Islam telah membuktikan mampu hidup damai dengan kelompok minoritas. Dalam pemerintahan Islam, kelompok minoritas ini menjadi tanggung jawab dan hak-hak mereka harus dijaga dan dipenuhi. Mereka ini dikenal dengan sebutan ahl al dzimmah. Pemerintahan Islam berkewajiban menjaga dan melindungi jiwa, keyakinan, kebebasan beribadah, kehormatan, kehidupan, dan harta benda non-Muslim yang menjadi ahl al-dzimmah sejauh mereka tidak melanggar pejanjian yang telah disepakati dengan kaum Muslim. Karena pentingnya konsep ahl dzimmah tersebut, artikel ini akan mengulas konsep tersebut sehingga jelas pula sikap Islam terhadap minoritas non-muslim.
