Abstract

Pulp necrosis is one of the main diseases that are most often found in the teeth and mouth. Root canal treatment is the main solution for pulp necrosis, but its implementation can lead to tooth death and recurrent infections. Regenerating the pulp by transplanting scaffolds, stem cells, and growth factors into the root canal is an alternative that can be offered to treat pulpal disease by keeping the teeth vital. Scaffold plays an important role in pulp regeneration, one of which is the ECM scaffold derived from pulp which combines the micro-collagen structure along with bioactive molecules that are important for pulp regeneration and able to promote the differentiation and proliferation of stem cells. This literature review aimed to identify the role of decellularized dental pulp as a new biomaterial candidate in pulp regenerations. The method being used in this review is systematic literature review using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses) method. Decellularized Dental Pulp as a New Biomaterial Candidate has a role in pulp regeneration.

Abstract

Monocytes as non-specific immune cells provide an early response to pathogens and foreign objects that enter the body. When exposed to pathogens or foreign objects, monocytes experience an increase in the number of free radicals. Free radicals activate phospholipase enzymes that break down membrane phospholipids into phosphate, glycerol and fatty acids. Unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) react with free radicals to undergo peroxidation to produce malondialdehyde (MDA). It takes antioxidant compounds that can reduce excess free radicals in the body. Coffee grounds as solid waste from the consumption of processed coffee products are not used and disposed of, it is suspected that they can be used as antioxidants. This study aims to determine the effect of coffee grounds steeping antioxidants on the profile of MDA levels in monocytes stimulated by the S. mutans exotoxin (In Vitro). Research was done in experimental post test only control group design. The object of this study was human peripheral blood monocytes, which were isolated by the Gradient Density method. Following in vitro exposure to the exotoxin S. mutans, the monocyte isolates were subjected to treatment with brewed coffee grounds extract at three different concentrations (0.25 mg/ml, 0.50 mg/ml, and 0.75 mg/ml). The MDA levels were subsequently determined by employing the TBArs method on a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results of MDA levels were analyzed using One Way Anova and LSD. The MDA level data showed significance (p<0.05) with the average MDA level in the Negative Control group1.49 g/ml; Positive Control 10.62 g/ml; T1 8.15 g/ml; T2 6.59 g/ml; and T3 4.69 g/ml. It can be concluded that the extract of brewed coffee grounds can reducing MDA levels in monocytes exposed to the exotoxin of S. mutans.

Abstract

Osteoblasts are important for orthodontic tooth movement because they influence the activity of bone formation on the tension area. The administration of natural ingredients such as black cumin is proven to increase the number of osteoblasts because it contains thymoquinone as antioxidants to accelerate the process of tooth movement. The study aims to determine the differences in osteoblast count and their effect on the orthodontic movement of teeth after oral administration of black cumin. The method used in this research is experimental laboratory in vivo with a randomized post-test only control group design using 16 male Sprague-Dawley rat samples that were devided into four groups: the control group (K) with distilled water for 7 and 14 days, also the treatment group (P) with black cumin (Nigella sativa) for 7 and 14 days Elastomeric separators were placed on the upper jaw central incisors (right central incisor) using a separator applier to provide orthodontic mechanical force conditions. Alveolar bone tissue samples were taken after treatment then the number of osteoblasts was calculated histologically. Data were anaylzed using One Way Anova Test and LSD (p<0.05). Result of this research indicated that there was an increase in the number of osteoblasts in orthodontic movement after oral administration of black cumin.

Abstract

Laminate veneer is a treatment in prosthodontic that is aesthetically pleasing and requires minimal preparation that can be fabricated with indirect resin composite, which is durable and low-cost, though this material has poor color stability. Due to the increasing consumption of black tea and apple juice, there was a need for this study to be taken out. This study aims to determine the effect of consumption of black tea and apple juice on colour stability. Indirect resin composite specimens were fabricated 20 mm in diameter and 1.5 mm in thickness and divided into 3 groups (n = 10). Specimens were immersed in 3 types of solutions: black tea, apple juice and aquadest as control. The color of specimens was measured before and after immersion using a color spectrophotometer. Statistical analysis was performed with univariate test, Mann-Whitney U test, Independent T-test, one-way ANOVA and LSD test. Mean delta E (ΔE) value for black tea is 1,381 ± 0,938 and ΔE = 6,803 ± 1,757 in apple juice. Black tea and apple juice reduced the color stability of indirect resin composite significantly with p = 0,001 (p < 0.05). The effect of immersion in both drinks differed significantly with p = 0,001 (p <0.05). Apple juice experienced the greatest reduction in color stability, followed by black tea, and lastly the control group. The difference in the effect of immersing black tea and apple juice was due to the difference in pH and major acid content.

Abstract

Oral candidiasis is a fungal infection of the superficial epithelium of the oral cavity caused by an overgrowth of Candida species. Effective therapy for oral candidiasis is nystatin. However, this drug has a variety of side effects. Therefore, natural therapeutic agent with minimal side effects is needed to be safe in long-term use. Okra fruit contains active ingredients that can be used as an antifungal agent. Aims to prove the ability of okra fruit extract and analyze the optimal concentration of okra fruit extract in inhibitting the growth of C. albicans. The antifungal activity test was carried out using the disk diffusion method. The research sample was divided into six groups, namely K (+) (nystatin), K (-) (DMSO 10%), and okra fruit extract with concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% obtained through the maceration process. Each research group was taken with a micropipette and then dripped on a paper disk. Paper disks were placed and distributed evenly on the surface of Saboroud Dextrose Agar (SDA) media that had been inoculated with C. albicans then incubated for 48 hours. The results showed the formation of a clear area around the paper disk that has been dropped with concentrations of 100%, 75%, and 50% of okra fruit extract. Okra fruit extract had an inhibitory effect on the growth of C. albicans and 100% concentration of okra fruit extract had the optimal ability to inhibit the growth of C. albicans.
