Abstract

Introduction: Older people are often proportional to the loss of teeth and reduced some body functions, such as decreased salivary flow rate. Systemic diseases such as diabetes that are common in the elderly lead to the decrease of salivary production. The use of denture is reported to increase the salivary flow rate. Methods: This study was an analytic survey with purposive sampling design involving 40 elderly people with diabetes mellitus with age range 45-59 years. Samples divided into two groups, group 1 was using removable denture, while group 2 was not using removable denture. Unstimulated saliva was collected by spitting method for 5 min. Salivary flow rate is obtained by measuring saliva volume in ml/min. Data were analyzed using unpaired t-test with significance level p<0.05.Results: The results showed that elderly people with diabetes mellitus using removable denture had higher salivary flow rate than not using removable denture significantly. Conclusion: the use of removable denture in elderly diabetic people is able to increase the salivary flow rate.

Abstract

Introduction: SThe carbonated beverage is the main factor  causing tooth erosion due to acidic and mass consumed, especially by children and adolescents.Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the  differences between solubility of calcium in deciduous teeth and  permanent teeth in the soaking fruit-flavored carbonated  beverage. Methods: The research was a quasi experimental research with the formulated research post test only design. The sample used was 24 teeth, which consists of 12 deciduous incisors central teeth of the maxillary and 12 incisor central permanent teeth of the maxillary. The samples were divided into 6 groups and treated by soaking in the carbonated soft drinks for 30, 45, and 60 minutes. The data analysis used in this reasearch was a Two Way ANOVA test with probability p<0.05. Furthermore, the data were analyzed by the Tukey HSD test to determine the  differences in each group. Results: Based on Two Way ANOVA test that was conduct, it was obtained significance value of 0.000 (p <0.05), so it can be concluded that there are significant differences between groups. From Tukey HSD test it was obtained a significance value of  p<0.05 in all groups. It means that there are significant differences between each group, except in the immersion group of deciduous teeth 30 minutes with the permanent teeth 45 minutes that obtained 0,929 significance (p>0.05). It means that there was no significant differences between the two treatment groups. The result of the data analysis reveals that there was a difference in the solubility of calcium in deciduous teeth and permanent teeth. The solubility of calcium in deciduous teeth was larger than the permanent teeth at all time duration,  because of the deciduous teeth had thinner and permeable enamel than permanent teeth.

Abstract

Background: In the wound healing process there are a variety of processes, including the most important are fibroplasia process that has a very important role in the wound healing process. Red ginger (Zingiber officinale) contains active ingredients include a mixture of components of essential oils and resins that oleoresin which has anti-inflammatory effects. The aim is determine the effect of red ginger extract against the number of fibroblasts in healing ulcers on the oral mucosa white male rats (Rattus norvegicus)Method: Samples using 24 male rats 2-3 months of age and body weight of 120-200 grams. Mandibular labial mucosa injured mice using H2O2 solution for 2x1 days. The samples were divided into 4 groups, where each group each of 4individuals: group 1 without any treatment, group 2 was treated application ginger gel extract 4%, group 3 was given treatment application ginger gel extract 8% and group 4 treated with applications aloclair gel. On the fourth day after the injury, the rats were decapitated, then do making preparations for histology to count the number of fibroblast cells.Result: The results Oneway ANOVA p value <0.05 and post Hoc Test LSD p value <0.05 which means that the extract of red ginger significantly affects the number of fibroblast cells and between groups have significant differencesConclusion: Extract red ginger gel is effective against the number of fibroblasts in healing ulcers on the oral mucosa white male rats.

Abstract

Background: Complementary food (MPASI) is the main food after the child weans from exclusive breastfeeding. One of the main sources of complementary food is milk. Most children are fed with cow’s milk, but since some children are lactose intolerant, they will be recommended to consume soy milk. However, soy milk and cow’s milk are known to have different amount of calcium as one of the key nutrients for tooth growth and development. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of cow’s milk and soy milk consumption on the calcium concentration of Wistar rat teeth.Method: Subjects were 27 male Wistar rats aged 1 month old divided into 3 groups, equally with 9 rats in each: groups that consumed cow’s milk, soy milk, and control group. The group consuming Cow and soy milk was fed 2 times a day, in the morning and evening for 28 days. Each subject was then euthanized and their mandibular right incisor was taken at the end of the treatment to measure calcium concentration by atomic absorption spectrophotometry.Result: The results of the one way ANOVA test showed that there were significant differences (p <0.05) in the calcium concentration of incisors in the teeth of rat consuming cow’s milk, soy milk, and control group. Hence, it can be concluded that the consumption of cow’s milk and soy milk has an effect on the calcium concentration of Wistar rat teeth. Conclusion: Calcium concentration of Wistar rat teeth that consume cow’s milk is higher than those that consume soy milk.

Abstract

Background: Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) released from hydrogen peroxide causes inflammation of the pulp. Remineralization action by fluoride-containing desensitizing agent (Casein Phosphopeptides-Amorphous Calcium Fluoride Phosphate/CPP-ACFP) occluding dentinal tubule, thereby minimizing the penetration of hydrogen peroxide into the pulp and affect the number of fibroblasts. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of fluoride-containing desensitizing agent (CPP-ACFP) application: before, after, and before-after in-office bleaching techniques using 40% hydrogen peroxide on the number of fibroblasts.Method: Twenty-eight maxillary molar teeth were divided into 4 groups, Control Group (bleaching treatment), Group I (CPP-ACFP application before bleaching), Group II (CPP-ACFP application after bleaching), and Group III (CPP-ACFP application before and after bleaching). Rats were sacrificed 5 days after and histological preparations were stained with HE. Fibroblasts counting was performed using a 1000x magnification light microscope.Result: ANOVA test showed that there were significant mean differences in the number of fibroblasts among the groups. The LSD test showed that there were statistically significant differences in almost all of the compared groups except between the Control Group and Group II.Conclusion: The number of fibroblasts in the pulp of rats applied CPP-ACFP before and after in-office bleaching was less than applied CPP-ACFP before or after in-office bleaching.

Abstract

Background: Since December 2019, a new and infectious type of pneumonia has been detected early in Wuhan, Hubei, and then spread rapidly throughout the world. By March 11th, 2020, WHO finally declared the infectious disease a pandemic. Research on the use of saliva as a method of detecting SARS-Cov-2 has been carried out throughout the world. However, to the best of our knowledge, not many literature reviews have reported on the use of saliva as a sample for the diagnosis of Covid-19. Method: This study aims to report interactively on the use of saliva as a sample for the diagnosis of Covid-19.Result: There are 9 articles that meet research criteria, namely: using a cohort and cross-sectional study design, not a review, case report, letters of editor or protocol, research using saliva as a detection tool, articles published from January to December 2020. Most saliva samples were compared with Nasopharyngeal swab sample for Covid-19 detection. Viral nucleic acids found in saliva obtained from the ducts of the salivary glands may indicate the presence of infection in these glands. Live virus can be detected in saliva through viral culture. Conclusion: Saliva samples show great potential in the detection of Covid-19 and can be recommended as an alternative to simple and non-invasive tests.
