Abstract

Background: Caries or cavities is a disease in the hard tissue of the teeth characterized by damage to enamel and dentin caused by the metabolic activity of bacteria in plaque which can cause demineralization due to the products of microorganisms. Xylitol gum and probiotics can be used to reduce the plaque index and the number of Streptococcus mutans colonies. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of chewing gum containing xylitol and probiotics on plaque growth and to determine the number of Streptococcus mutans colonies in students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Sultan Agung Islamic University.Method: This study used an experimental research method with a randomized posttest only control group design used 30 respondents divided into 3 groups, namely the xylitol, probiotics, and sugar groups. Each group had a good oral hygiene index (OHIS) and then checked the plaque index and the number of Streptococcus mutans colonies before and after chewing gum for 1 minute. Data were analyzed in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, Sultan Agung Islamic University. Data were analyzed using paired t-test and Wilcoxon test. Result: The p value <0.05 or there was no significant decrease in each group. Conclusion: There is an effect of chewing gum containing xylitol and probiotics on the number of Streptococcus mutans and plaque index, but there is no significant difference between the plaque index and the number of Streptococcus mutans colonies.

Abstract

Background: Root canal treatment failure can be caused by periapical lesions and inadequate restorations such as post restorations. It showed that comprehensive evaluation, such as clinical or radiographic evaluation, is needed to observe the healing of endodontically treated dental and intra-radicular post-condition, especially fiber post and fiber reinforced composite (FRC). This research aims to evaluate the clinical and radiographic success of endodontically treated teeth restored with single crown restoration using a non-metal post. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional design and descriptive observation of evaluating endodontically treated teeth. 72 samples were collected from medical records, and radiographs of endodontically treated patients; then, scoring was carried out to categorize the treatment outcome using modified Strindberg criteria. Results: Endodontically treated dental restoration with non-metal post evaluation showed 63,9% teeth categorized as uncertain, followed by 36,1% teeth categorized as success and 0% in the failure category. Conclusion: The result of this study suggests that a longer follow-up period will be needed to achieve a more stable evaluation result.

Abstract

Background: Gingivitis is a periodontal disease caused by accumulation of bacteria plaque on the tooth surface. The primary treatment of gingivitis by removing its etiologic factors that found in phase I of periodontal therapy is scaling and plaque control. Healing process of gingivitis takes time, therefore sometimes using antimicrobial and antiinflamatory drugs as an adjunctive therapy is needed. The use of celery extract as mouthwash containing flavonoid (apiin and apigenin) works as antibacterial and antiinflamatory agent. The purpose of this study is to acknowledge the use of celery leafs extract (Apium graveolens L.) 10% and Chlorhexidine glukonat 0.1% as mouthwash to accelerate the healing process of gingivitis after scaling and root planing.Method: Experimental study using pre and post-test control group design. Samples were taken from FKG UNMAS students and RSGM FKG UNMAS patients within the period that met the inclusion criteria of caries patients, male sex, age 18-25 years old, with exclusion systemic disease and undergo orthodontic treatment, denture or prosthesis others. Subjects have index teeth (11, 16, 26, 36, 31, 46) and willing to take part in the research. A total of 32 samples divided into two groups by simple random sampling technique. Group I as control group rinsing with chlorhexidine gluconate 0,1% after scaling and Group II as experimental group rinsing with celery leaf extract 10% after scalingResult: The mean of gingival index pre-post treatment in group I: 1,29+0,11 and group II: 1,09+ 0,16. Data analyzed with independent t-test, and the results shows no significant difference between both group (p=0,071) Conclusion: Gargling for three days showed no significant difference between gargling with celery leaf extract (Apium graveolens L.) 10% and chlorhexidine gluconate 0.1% because it was equally effective at treating post-scaling gingivitis.

Abstract

Background: There are still quite a lot of cases of tooth extraction in Indonesia because of the cavities are not treated or because of other cases. Extraction is the main cause of 90% of bone destruction and a risk of infection and bleeding. Fibroin sponge is a natural polymer material derived from Bombyx mori silk cocoon which contains of 18 amino acids and have a good mechanically, biodegradable and biocompatible. This study aimed to determine the effect of fibroin sponge on the remodeling of post tooth extraction sockets.Method: This study was a laboratory experiment with quasy experimental design using 30 Sprague dawley rats divided into 2 groups. Each group had the mandibular left incisor extracted. The first group as a control was given 15 ug of Curaspon and the second group was given 15 ug of fibroin sponge intra alveolar.Result: The results were observed after the 3rd, 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th days under a light microscope and identified by scoring bone remodeling based on predetermined criteria. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney Test followed by the Kruskall-Wallis Test. The results showed that there was no difference in the process of bone remodeling post tooth extraction in the fibroin sponge group compared to Curaspon (p>0.05).Conclusion: Fibroin sponge has the same effect on the bone remodeling process as Curaspon.

Abstract

Background: Orthodontic tooth movement is caused by mechanichal forces that cause pseudo-inflammation with the result that FGF (Fibroblast Growth Factors) was activated. The combination of SHED (Stem Cell From Human Exfoliated Deciduous Theeth) and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) hydrogels can affect the formation of fibroblast in the alveolar bone regeneration. The purpose of this study is the effect determination of SHED and PRP hydrogels for fibroblast formation in alveolar bone regeneration in wistar rats.Method: An experimental study was held using post-test only control group design. There were four groups, namely the PRP hydrogel group, the SHED hydrogel group, the SHED and PRP hydrogel group, and the povidone iodine group (n=8) treated with orthodontic tooth movement. Their mandibular tissue was made as histologycal slide, and the FGF expression were observed microscopically with 100x magnification. The data analyzed by ANNOVA and LSD test.Result: There was a significant effect of the combination of SHED and PRP hydrogel in ordering fibroblast in alveolar bone regeneration by ANNOVA test 0.001 (<0.05). This is because SHED and PRP are able to stimulate FGF expression through external stimulation.Conclusion: It concluded that the combination of SHED and PRP hydrogel affected fibroblast formation on alveolar bone regeneration in wistar rats

Abstract

Background: Digital panaromic radiograph is used to assist dentist in taking complete pictures of the oral cavity. ImageJ is a software application that helps assess the enamel density of permanent teeth. The density of permanent teeth enamel is influenced by many factors, including the consumption of milk given since infancy. Exclusive breastfeeding has a more complete content and rich of benefit than formula milk. The aim of this study is to determine the enamel density of permanent teeth by using a panaromic radiograph technique with ImageJ application to children aged 6-9 years who were given exclusive breastfeeding and formula milk.Method: This is an analytic observational study using a retrospective cohort approach. The sampling technique used consecutive sampling and obtained 23 respondents with panaromic radiographs of children aged 6-9 years consisting of 10 children consuming formula milk and 13 children consumingexclusive breastfeeding. The enamel density was assessed using ImageJ application. The data was analyzed statistically using Man-Whitney comparative testResult: The results reveal that there was difference in the permanent teeth enamel density between children aged 6-9 years who consumed exclusive breastfeeding and formula milk which showed p value of 0,021.Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that the type of milk has an effect on the enamel density of permanent teeth and children who consume exclusive breastfeed milk have a higher permanent teeth enamel density

Abstract

Background: The third molars (M3) are the most frequently impacted teeth because they are the last to erupt, so they often don’t get enough space to erupt. The characteristics of impacted M3 teeth can be different for each person. This study aims to provide a description of maxillary M3 impaction based on age, sex, classification, treatment, and anesthesia in Bandung City population. Method: This was a descriptive study using secondary data from medical records and panoramic radiographs at RSGM UNPAD with a purposive sampling technique. Determination of the characteristic impaction using a classification based on Archer, Shiller, Jung and Cho, and Killy and Kay, analyzed with ImageJ software by interobserver and intraobserver, and tested using Kappa statistics for reliability.Result: There were 134 impacted teeth from 102 impacted patients with 67 females (66.34%) and most cases occurred in 17-25 years old (60.4%); Class B, 82 cases (60.9%); distoangular angulation, 76 cases (56.72%); Class 3, 76 cases (52.24%); and one fused roots, 83 cases (64.93%). The most common procedure performed was odontectomy (87.25%) with local anesthesia (63.73%)Conclusion: Characteristics of upper M3 impaction in terms of position, angulation, and its relation to age and sex is needed for the diagnosis, so the management plan by the clinician is better and safer. Panoramic radiography can still be used to determine classification and diagnosis in preparing a treatment plan even though it has limitations.

Abstract

Background: Scaffold for bone regeneration is called bone graft as well, requires the proper design in order to produce new bone formation. Characteristic requirements are needed. Method: The aimed of this review to discuse the characteristics of scaffold that be needed for bone regeneration. Result: The strength of the scaffold's mechanical structure and degradation profile are adjusted to the time that take for cells to differentiate into bone cells. The swelling ability, porosity size, and interconnected porosity determine the success of incorporation of signal molecules which loaded into the scaffold. The proper selection of molecule signal is needed for stimulating cells to differentiate to be bone cells. The porosity size is adjusted to cell size, because scaffold as a micro enviroment for cells to live, grow and form a new bone. The basic ingredients of scaffold should qualify the biocompatibility standards to be accepted by the body. Scaffold is a micro enviroment for cells to produce bone matrix, and should be degraded properly after the new bone formation is formed. Conclusion: Therefore the right characteristics should be fulfilled in the design of scaffold for bone regeneration.

Abstract

Background: Gingival recession is a condition that occurs when the gingival margin is more apically than the cemento-enamel junction and causes the tooth root to open, so a root closure procedure is required. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) contains growth factors, including Fibroblast growth factor which plays a role in the process of angiogenesis and cell proliferation. The activation time is known to affect platelet count and FGF expression. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the activation time of platelet rich plasma and collagen on the expression of fibroblast growth factor in the gingival crevicular fluidMethod: The research sample was gingival crevicular fluid which was taken using paper point #30 for 30 seconds as many as 18 samples. Samples were taken before surgery, day 5 and day 7 after surgery. The samples were divided into 2 groups based on the activation time, 1 hour and 24 hours PRP-collagen. Changes in FGF levels were examined using ELISA. Repeated Meassure ANOVA test was conducted to compare the differences in each time observation and post hoc was performed to compare the differences between groups for each time observation.Result: There was no significant difference in FGF levels in the gingival crevicular fluid at each time and between groups.Conclusion: There was no effect of the activation time of platelet rich plasma and collagen on the levels of fibroblast growth factor in gingival crevicular fluid

Abstract

Background: The radiographic images similarity of a dentigerous cyst, ameloblastoma, and odontogenic keratocyst can lead to misdiagnosis. The radiographic images of these lesions can be analyzed using panoramic radiographs and CBCT with quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis. The purpose of this study was to find out what radiographic methods is better to used on panoramic radiograph and cbct to analysis these lesions so that the diagnose could be more objective, to determine the characteristics of these lesions, and to determine the use of CBCT and panoramic radiography in establishing radiodiagnosis of these lesions.Method: This research was conducted using a scoping review, through searching for articles related to the research topic in Pubmed, EBSCOHost, and Google Scholar. Result: Fifty-eight studies and case reports were reviewed in this study. This study analyzed these lesions using quantitative methods based on buccolingual size, density, and lesion volume using CBCT. Qualitative methods were used to analyze border and shapes, associations, internal structures, and locations using panoramic radiography and CBCT. Based on the cases studied, size, border, and shape of these lesions were the least optimal characteristics analyzed by panoramic radiography and CBCT.Conclusion: Ameloblastoma has a higher incidence of multilocular forms than OKC and dentigerous cysts and causes tooth resorption, while dentigerous cysts often cause tooth displacement. CBCT can be a gold standard in analyzing dentigerous cyst, ameloblastoma, and odontogenic keratocyst. Analysis of CBCT images could be more objective because it can be carried out using quantitative methods for calculating the density, volume, and size of the buccolingual expansion. Based on the case reports reviewed, size, border, and shape are the least used in determining suspected radiodiagnosis.
