Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Oral health problems are behavioral problems. One of the groups prone to dental and mouth problems is teenagers. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between intention and personal autonomy with the behavior of maintaining oral health in adolescents.Method: This study was an analytic survey study with a cross sectional study approach. The subjects of this study were teenagers at Texmaco Semarang Vocational School, totaling 90 students with a total sampling technique. The research instrument used was a questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out by univariate analysis (frequency distribution) to explain the characteristics and results of each variable and bivariate analysis using the Spearman rank correlation test to see the relationship between the two variables.Result: The results of the study show female respondents have a higher intention/motivation in maintaining dental health compared to male respondents. Female respondents tend to prefer to decide for themselves in relation to dental health care compared to male respondents. Female respondents are better at maintaining dental health, compared to male respondents. Intention and personal autonomy are related to adolescent actions in maintaining dental and oral health with p-value 0.000 <0.05.Conclusion: Behavior has an important role in public health status. Intention as a major predictor of behavior. Personal autonomy contributes greatly to behavior change.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: COVID-19 pandemic is a new challenge for dentist. Doctor-patients contact, aerosol formed during treatment, and contact with contaminated instruments are the transmission route for COVID-19 infection. Several guidelines and suggestion regarding infection control measures have been released, but the standard protective measures in daily clinical work are not effective enough to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Aim To provide an overview of the measures that can be made in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in dental health services Method: Systematic literature review used literature search methods in electronic databases: Google Scholar, Science Direct, and PubMed. The keywords were “COVID-19 and dental practice” and “dental practice during COVID-19”. The inclusion criteria for selection of scientific articles were years of publication from January 2020 to October 2020, published in English and full paper available. Out of 44 articles that have been screened, nine articles have been included in this reviewResult: The nine articles that were collected have already pointed out some necessary measures. Patients screening and triage are the first steps in selecting emergency cases, minimal invasive procedure are the principle in every dental treatment, and the use or personal protective equipment for dentist and team is an absolute requirement before performing any dental treatment.Conclusion: Protecting the oral environment through dental checks-up with preventive measure is important during the pandemic.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Alveolar bone resorption can occur after tooth extraction. One source of bone scaffold material is hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate (HA-TCP). The shell of Anadara granosa can be synthesized to be HA-TCP. Hyaluronic acid, which is widely contained in Stichopus hermanni, can stimulate endothelial progenitor cells for the healing process. Purpose: This research aims to prove the Effectivity of scaffold from Anadara granosa shell-Stichopus hermanni on blood vessel counts after tooth extraction. Methods: The sample in this study was male Wistar rats divided into four study groups randomly. Each group consists of 6 rats. Extraction was carried out on the mandibular first incisor, then was given gelatin as a placebo in the control group, treatment groups given scaffold from Anadara granosa shells (AG), and scaffold combination from Anadara granosa shells-Stichopus hermanni with concentrations of 0.4%-0.8%. (AGSH1-AGSH2). Development of HA-TCP synthesized from Anadara granosa combined with Stichopus hermanni extract for biomedical scaffolds using the freeze-dried method. Observations were made three days after tooth extraction. Data analysis has used one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey HSD (p<0.05). Results: The results of the ANOVA test followed by the HSD-Tukey test showed a significant difference between C (7.33±1.51) and AGSH1 (11.50±1.38), AGSH2 (21.17±1.94), AG (9.33±1.63) and AGSH1 with AGSH2, but between AG and, AGSH1 no significant differences.Conclusions: Combination scaffold from Anadara granosa shell and Stichopus hermanni 0.8% effectively increased blood vessel counts after tooth extraction.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Aloe vera (AV) contains a variety of characteristic antibiotic and anti-inflammatory components that have potential advantages for periodontal disease therapy. Diagnostic and prognostic markers of periodontal disease through the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in gingival crevicular fluid. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of giving AV gel on alkaline phosphatase levels in rats with bacteria-induced periodontitisMethod: Thirty-six male Sprague dawley were healthy and active, weighing 170-200 grams, aged 2 months were distinguished into two groups: the control group of periodontitis given therapy Gel Metronidazole plus 25% and AV gel 99.03% as a treatment group. Aloe vera gel is administered topically in gingival sulcus at a dose of 300 mg/kg of rat weight. Samples were taken from gingival sulcus liquid on days 1, 2 and 3 using periopaper paper. Alkaline phosphatase levels are measured using a UV/Vis Spectrophotometer with a wavelength of 405 nm. Variant analysis is used to compare ALP levels in different groupsResult: There was significant difference in alkaline phosphatase levels between the control group and the treatment group (p>0.05). In Sprague dawley rats with periodontitis, there was a significant decrease in ALP levels on days 1, 2 and 3 given Metronidazole gel plus 25% therapy and AV gel 99.03%. But the treatment group showed lower ALP levels than the control groupConclusion: This study revealed that the use of AV gel locally has an effect and can be as an adjunct therapy for periodontitis

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Acrylic resin artificial teeth is easily to have bacterial adhesion. It is necessary to perform a treatment on that surface, in order to reduce bacterial adhesion. This study aimed to reveal the effect of silica coating in acrylic resin artificial teeth on surface roughness, contact angle measurement, and the growth of Streptococcus mutans.Method: The study was conducted on two groups (n=16) of disk-shaped acrylic resin artificial teeth with a diameter of 10 mm and thickness of 2 mm. A 2% silica coating material was obtained by diluting 2 g silica nanoparticles on 100 ml of ethanol. Surface roughness, contact angle measurement, and the growth of Streptococcus mutans was measured using surface roughness measuring instrument, camera digital, and colony counter. The data obtained were then analyzed using T-test (p<0.05).Result: The results showed that the surface roughness and contact angle measurement in group I (0.29±0.08 μm); (79,49º ± 10,88º) was higher than group II (0.17±0.05 μm); (34,77º±0,05º). The growth of Streptococcus mutans in group I was also higher (32.28±3.75 CFU/ml) than group II (24.83±3.47 CFU/ml). Conclusion: The study concluded that there is an effect of silica coating on surface roughness, contact angle measurement, and the growth of Streptococcus mutans in acrylic resin artificial teeth.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Black tea has been shown to affect reducing dental plaque and increasing fluoride levels in saliva. The practice of consuming black tea in the form of candy for dental health purposes is not familiar yet. A study on the effectiveness of chewing black tea candy added with sorbitol sugar for a month on salivary fluoride levels in children aged 7-8 years can be an innovation in the prevention of dental caries. This study aims to investigate the difference in fluoride levels in saliva before and after chewing black tea candy for one month in children aged 7-8 years.Method: This is a field experimental study with double-blind and randomization. Subjects involved in this study were 44 children divided into control and intervention groups using simple random sampling. Measurement of salivary fluorine levels using the TECAN Infinite M200 Pro® UV – VIS Spectrophotometer for 3 times.Result: The results of the independent T-test showed that there were significant differences in the fluorine content in the intervention group using black tea candy on 26 November 2019, 29 November 2019, and 16 December 2019 (p<0.05).Conclusion: Chewing black tea candy is effective in increasing the amount of fluoride in saliva. Thus, it can be an alternative to anti-cariogenic agents.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Geographic tongue is a condition that involves the dorsal surface of the tongue. This condition is usually painless, but in some cases, it may be accompanied by a burning sensation.The cause is unknown, but it is thought to be related to heredity, hormonal imbalances, allergies, and anemia. The aim of this study is to describe the geographic tongue, which is associated with burning mouth syndrome. Procedure: A 23-year-old woman came to RSIGM Sultan Agung Semarang with the chief complaint of fissure front tongue and moving spots, which made her sore when eating spicy food. According to the findings of the investigations, the MCV and MCH values were low, while the total IgE level was higher than normal. Geographic tongue with burning mouth syndrome et causa allergy and iron deficiency were the diagnoses in this case. The treatment for this condition is iron containing vitamins. Conclusion: More investigation is required to determine the correct diagnosis, etiology, and treatment. Iron supplements can support to reduce the complaints. As a follow-up management of allergic conditions and iron deficiency, some more examinations by dermatologist and internist are required.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Broken instruments affect the outcome and prognosis. A broken instrument will prevent the procedure of cleaning and shaping, irrigation and obturation of the root canal on the obstructed root section causing failure in endodontic treatment. There are some treatments for broken instrument including retrieving a broken fragment file and bypassing it on the root canal. the aim of the case report aims to provide an alternative for retrieving broken instruments using the H-file braiding technique. Method: A 38-year-old female patient came to the Dental Conservation Clinic RSGM Prof. Soedomo FKG UGM. A patient got a history of initial root canal treatment in a clinic, which ended with a separated file on canine teeth left upper. No complain pain, from the investigation radiographic there is an instrument broken in half apical. The teeth 23 seen temporary restoration cavity class I is still in good. Retrieving broken instruments using the H-file braiding technique, preparation with step back techniques, obturation with warm vertical condensation technique and class I composite resin restorations with fiber-reinforced retention. Result: No complain pain after 2 weeks retrieving broken instrument.Conclusion: The technique of the H-file braiding technique is one technique to retrieve a broken instrument, this procedure is simple, cost-effective, harmless to the teeth and gives root canal sealing.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: The process of orthodontic bone resorption and remodelling occur simultaneously. Areas under continuous stress experience nutritional deficiencies and hypoxia, which results in cell death and cause alveolar bone resorption. The increase in osteoclasts is associated with the inflammatory process because it is accompanied by an increase in inflammatory mediators. The combination of SHED and PRP can induce regeneration of the alveolar bone of teeth and can inhibit the bone resorption process thereby suppressing the inflammatory process.Method: This research method was experimental post-test only control group design, with a total sample of 32 individuals treated with PRP gel, SHED gel, a combination of PRP and SHED, and povidone iodine with a duration of 14 days. Wedge application to the interdental teeth to produce the effect of orthodontic movement. Analysis of the one way ANOVA hypothesis test found that there was a significant difference in the reduction of osteoclasts in each experimental group (P <0.05).Result: It can be concluded that the mean osteoclast reduction in the PRP group was 359±107.3, SHED 392±170.5, the combination of PRP and SHED 480±151.3, povidone iodine 480±151.3.Conclusion: There is an effect of the combination of SHED and PRP on the reduction of osteoclasts in the alveolar bone of male Wistar rat.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: The important role of coastal communities is not directly in line with their living conditions, which are mostly poor. Dental caries is basically a disease that is also suffered by the general public in Indonesia, even in the world. RISKESDAS 2018 shows the prevalence of caries in Indonesia is 88.8%. Dental caries is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus mutans. People who live in coastal areas are at risk of suffering from dental caries. Brushing behavior also has a relationship with the incidence of dental caries. Method: All articles reviewed were obtained from Pubmed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar with a period of 10 years in full text. using the keywords behavior, caries, and coastal area.Result: Based on reviews from several journals, it was found that the brushing behavior of coastal communities was good, but the frequency of brushing teeth was not appropriate and the behavior of using drinking water had no known fluoride content. There are variations in the category of dental caries at the age level of people in coastal areas.Conclusion: Knowledge and healthy behavior can reduce the risk of dental caries related to the behavior of coastal communities, so that life productivity can be much better than ever.
