Abstract

Background: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is an important component of the masticatory and stomatognatic system, responsible for opening and closing the mouth, chewing food, and breathing. Anchoring, which refers to the hand placement on the chin, can lead to dysfunction of the TMJ known as temporomandibular disorder (TMD) Method: This study utilized a descriptive observational approach with a cross-sectional design. It was conducted in various archery fields involving 57 respondents. The examination used the ID-TMD index. Result: Out of  57 respondents, 28 (49,13%) experienced symptoms of TMD: 45.61% experienced mild TMD, and 3,50% experienced moderate TMD. Adolescent women are the group that complains most about TMD, with the most common symptom being headache, which is felt by 77,19% of all respondents. Conclusion: There is a tendency that the anchoring position is associated with the occurrence of TMD among archery athletes, as indicated by the ID-TMD index.

Abstract

Background: Malocclusion is the third most prevalent dental and oral health problem worldwide. The global prevalence of malocclusion among adolescents is approximately 56%. Malocclusion can be treated through orthodontic treatment. Adolescents' interest in undergoing orthodontic treatment can be influenced by their knowledge about malocclusion. TikTok is one of the social media platforms that can be used to disseminate information in order to increase adolescents’ knowledge. Methods: This research is a quasi-experimental study using a pretest-posttest control group design. Sampling was conducted using proportional sampling and simple random sampling to determine the school locations involved in the study. The number of respondents from each school was then determined using stratified random sampling. A total of 241 respondents from five high schools in Purwokerto participated in this study. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test for pre-test and post-test comparisons within groups, and the Kruskal-Wallis test for comparisons between the intervention and control groups. Results: The results showed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores in the intervention group exposed to the educational content on TikTok. There was also a significant difference in the increase in knowledge between the intervention group and the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The conclusion of this research is that educational content about malocclusion delivered through TikTok has a significant effect on increasing the knowledge of malocclusion among adolescents in Purwokerto.

Abstract

Background: Susuk (Charm needles) are talisman small metal needles that are inserted subcutaneously, widely practiced in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia, and believed to enhance beauty, youth, charisma, strength, or health, or bring success in business of users. Method: This study was a descriptive, cross-sectional study. All of outpatients in one of Hospital in West Jakarta, Indonesia from January to June 2025 who were referred for dental treatment and underwent routine radiological examinations were included. The length and diameter of susuk was calculated based on the comparison formula. The age, gender, facial pain, DMF-T, and health status were examined and recorded. Data is summarized and processed to be presented as a descriptive statisticResult: A total of 6 females and 2 males were using susuk with an average age of 65.125+7.149 years consist of 3 females and 1 male had 1 susuk, 1 male and 2 females had 2 susuk, 1 female had 7 susuk.  Orbicularis oris is the most common location of susuk, 1 female with Bell’s Palsy was reported. Mean of DMF-T was 14.5+6.1; Type 2 Diabetes was found in 5 users, hyperthyroid in 2 users; with other diseases such as joint inflammation and hypertension. Conclusion: Orofacial susuk users were elderly and mostly women with DMF-T index were very high and suffer from several comorbidities.

Abstract

Background: Chi-AgNPs (chitosan–silver nanoparticles) are antibacterial biomaterials with good biocompatibility potential, but their toxicity to osteoblastic cells still needs to be studied. This study aims to analyze the effect of Chi-AgNPs synthesized using Clinacanthus nutans extract on the viability of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblast cells at several concentrations to determine the safe concentration limit for their use.Method:  This laboratory experimental study used MC3T3-E1 cells exposed to Chi-AgNPs at concentrations of 12.5 µg/mL, 25 µg/mL, and 50 µg/mL, with a control group as a comparison. Cell viability was measured using the WST assay after 24 hours of incubation, then analyzed using the ANOVA test to see the differences between groups. Result: The results showed that a concentration of 12.5 µg/mL increased the average viability value by 30.8%, while a concentration of 25 µg/mL did not show a significant difference in cell viability compared to the control. Conversely, a concentration of 50 µg/mL caused a significant decrease in viability (p < 0.05), indicating toxicity related to the release of Ag⁺ ions and increased oxidative stress due to the small size of the nanoparticles (20 ± 3.93 nm). Conclusion: Chi-AgNPs are safe and biocompatible with MC3T3-E1 cells at concentrations below 25 µg/mL

Abstract

Background: One type of restorative substance is composite resin, which also comes in microhybrid form. Surface roughness is one of the clinical characteristics that may serve as a predictor of the longevity of restorative materials. The habit of drinking low-pH beverages is one of the things that influences surface roughness. One of the most consumed beverages in society is a fermented milk beverage. Fermented milk is usually safe for consumption by those with sensitivity to dairy products since the bacteria in it can break down lactose into lactic acid. Lactic acid, which has a pH of 4.2–4.8, is found in fermented milk. The purpose of this research is to ascertain how soaking fermented milk affects the microhybrid composite resin's roughness. Methods: This study uses a pre-test post-test design methodology and is conducted in a laboratory setting. There are 27 samples of microhybrid composite resins that are conducted with fermented milk. Prior to and following immersion, the surface roughness of the microhybrid composite resin was measured using a surface roughness tester as part of this study. Results: On the first through the seventh day of immersion, there was a noticeable rise in the surface roughness of the Microhybrid composite resin submerged in fermented milk. Conclusion: After being immersed in a solution of fermented milk for one, four, and seven days, the nanohybrid composite resin is affected by its roughness.

Abstract

Background: Enterococcus faecalis is frequently associated with persistent root canal infections due to its ability to form resistant biofilms. However, evidence regarding the antibiofilm activity of specific plant-derived fractions, particularly the ethyl acetate fraction of coriander seeds (Coriandrum sativum), remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of this fraction on E. faecalis ATCC 29212 biofilm formation.Method: Dried coriander seeds were extracted using ethanol and subsequently fractionated with ethyl acetate to obtain the active fraction. Biofilm inhibition was assessed using a 96-well polystyrene microplate assay after exposure to various concentrations. Calcium hydroxide was used as a control. Biofilm biomass was quantified by measuring optical density (OD). Each group was tested in five replicates (n=5). Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA followed by a Bonferroni post-hoc test.Result: All tested materials exhibited inhibitory activity against E. faecalis biofilms. Calcium hydroxide showed the highest mean inhibition (69.41%), while the 16% concentration of coriander seed ethyl acetate fraction demonstrated the strongest activity among the experimental groups (64.89%). Statistical analysis revealed significant differences between concentration groups (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The ethyl acetate fraction of coriander seeds demonstrated concentration-dependent antibiofilm activity against E. faecalis ATCC 29212 in vitro. Higher concentrations showed greater inhibitory effects, however, further studies are required to confirm its clinical applicability.

Abstract

Background: Traumatic ulcers are common oral mucosal lesions causing discomfort, infection, and delayed healing. Conventional therapy is commonly used, but the use of herbal materials is expected to be an affordable and effective alternative therapy. Gelatin was chosen because it is a natural biomaterial rich in amino acids, which play a role in regulating inflammation and tissue regeneration, particularly in influencing the number of macrophages and lymphocytes in the inflammatory phase and fibroblast proliferation. The primary objective was to determine the effect of Pangasius djambal fish skin gelatin on the healing process of traumatic ulcers in Rattus norvegicusMethod: A number of 36 Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) were used as research subjects and divided into three main groups based on the treatment and further divided based on the day of the tissue collection. Traumatic ulcers were induced on the lower jaw labial mucosa using thermal trauma. The Negative Control Group (NC) received no treatment, the Positive Control Group (PC) was treated with Aloclair Plus GelTM, while the Treatment Group (T) was treated with 100% Pangasius djambal skin gelatin. Tissue samples were collected on day 3, 5, and 7, followed by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining to observe macrophages, lymphocytes, and fibroblasts under a microscope using 400× magnification.Result: Statistical analysis using the One-way ANOVA test showed a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the number of macrophages, lymphocytes, and fibroblasts across all experimental groups. In the treatment group receiving 100% Pangasius djambal skin gelatin, a significant decrease in macrophages and lymphocytes was observed on 5th and 7th days, indicating a faster resolution of the inflammatory phase. Simultaneously, there was a significant increase in the number of fibroblasts from 5th to 7th day in the treatment group compared to the control groups, demonstrating accelerated granulation tissue formation and enhanced wound healing.Conclusion: The recovery of traumatic ulcers in Rattus norvegicus can be affected by application of Pangasius djambal skin gelatin.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is a multifactorial disease that is a health problem in children. Children 5-9 years old have the highest caries prevalence. Untreated dental caries can be measured using the PUFA/pufa index. Sungai Kupang Village has acidic water with pH values ranging from 3.09-6.45 and an iron (Fe) content above the maximum allowable level of 1.044mm/ltr. Most people use wetland water in their daily lives, including for gargling after brushing their teeth. Brushing teeth with acidic water can reduce the surface hardness of tooth enamel, thereby increasing the risk of dental caries. Method: The study used a descriptive, cross-sectional design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The sample of 148 children aged 5-9 years was visually examined with a dental mirror to assess the severity of dental caries using PUFA/pufa index criteria, including pulp involvement (P/p), ulceration (U/u), fistula (F/f), and Abscess (A/a). The research data were analyzed descriptively and presented as frequencies, percentages, and average PUFA/pufa. Result: PUFA/pufa index of untreated dental caries in the form of pulp involvement (P/p) was 3.0; ulceration (U/u) was 0.06; fistula (F/f) was 0.1, and abscess (A/a) was 0.02. The caries severity of untreated dental caries based on the PUFA/pufa index was 3.1. The 7-year-old age group and female gender had the highest average PUFA index. Conclusion: According to the average PUFA/pufa index, children 7 years old and female have the most severe untreated dental caries.
