Abstract

Abstract: The article reveals the crucial role of contextualizing fiqh as the foundation of Islamic law in addressing contemporary human challenges, with a particular focus on interfaith fiqh. In the modern era when societies are increasingly diverse and interconnected, it is imperative to adapt and advance Islamic legal principles to effectively address current issues and promote harmonious coexistence. This article uses library research as a data collection technique and theory of maslahah to discuss the subject. It argues that fiqh has the capacity to adjust to the demands of the contemporary era. Interreligious fiqh in Indonesia needs to get more attention, which will be a social landmark in the midst of social diversity. In essence, in sharia, Islamic principles promote mutual respect social control, deliberation, peace, pluralism, brotherhood, loving-kindness, equality, fairness, freedom, responsibility and honesty. Efforts that can be taken are: (1) practicing mutual forgiveness, (2) respecting human dignity, (3) being fair and creative in solving problems, and (4) formulating a peaceful civilization with a loving-kindness approach. Because digital space is the second place of socialization and has been a primary need for modern humans, by utilizing such social medias as Instagram, WhatsApp, websites, Facebook and other platforms, this article supports the socialization process of fiqh products which are inclusive, humanist and pluralist.

Abstract

The explanation of when and under what conditions post-Islamism elite is more moderate toward democratic values is still up for debate. The majority of studies explain these issues at the national level without taking into account the local dynamics and variety of experiences. Based on a comparative study on Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (Prosperous Justice Party or PKS) at the local level (Depok and Sukabumi City, West Java) on the acceptance and repudiation of religious freedom rights, this study argues that moderation is not a linear process and is largely determined by strategic confidence, where the moderation can maintain or even expand their power and influence. This study demonstrates how social pressure, organizational structure, and political experience are interconnected and influence the choice of moderation or immoderation.

Abstract

This paper explores the emergence of the Jaringan Intelektual Muda Muhammadiyah (JIMM: Muhammadiyah Young Intellectual Network) as a response to the perceived stagnation of Islamic thought within Muhammadiyah. The discussion encompasses the historical challenges faced by Muhammadiyah, including the dominance of Western-oriented modernism, organizational routine, and resistance to change within the institution. The analysis delves into the controversies surrounding JIMM, as it faced resistance from various circles within Muhammadiyah, often labeled as “liberal” and accused of affiliating with the Liberal Islamic Network (JIL). The paper details the resistance encountered by JIMM, both institutionally and ideologically, including attempts to disband the network during the 46th Congress of Muhammadiyah in 2005. The paper also examines the shift in Muhammadiyah’s stance towards JIMM over time, from initial resistance to eventual accommodation within the organization’s structure and thought processes. The narrative concludes by highlighting Muhammadiyah’s evolving perspective on JIMM as a potential catalyst for intellectual regeneration within the Islamic organization.

Abstract

This article aims to evaluate the use of digital media in the context of Catholic education, especially in religious activities. The method used in this study is content analysis as well as interviews on various aspects of the parish using ATLAS.ti7 software. It encompasses church building history, architectural design, community engagement, blessing ceremonies, photos, videos, writings, digital media integration and so forth. The results reveal that digital media has been used in a variety of church activities, including sharing photos, videos and writings and integrating digital media into religious experiences. However, its use in the context of Catholic education is still narrow. These factors include local conditions, limited resources and pastoral priorities. Nonetheless, digital media has great potential to be used as an educational tool in the Catholic context with the right approach and investment in the right resources.

In this article we discuss Jesus in the Quran and the Hadith, the anthropology of Jesus in Islam, the miracle of Jesus in the Islamic context, the Christian polemic against Islam in the Middle Ages and the dialogue and peace between Christians and Muslims. The method employed is content analysis of relevant primary and secondary data. The data collection method uses library research to explore various reference sources. The primary and secondary data obtained are then analyzed using a qualitative approach. The result is that the figure of Jesus based on Oddbjørn Leirvik’s thought can be used to promote harmony and peace in religious relationships, and it is very relevant to Indonesian context. The awareness of the figure of Jesus based on Islamic and Catholic teachings is essential to promote harmony especially in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Ḥaḍramī people in Indonesia, popularly called ḥabā’ib, are those of Arab descent who have contributed to the history of this nation. Their same origin does not necessarily make this community homogeneous, especially when it comes to Islam and Indonesianness. The vibrant tones that characterize this diversity can even be traced back to the colonial era. One of them is related to the struggle for the influence of h}abā’ib’s religious politics in the public sphere. The recent growth of their authority at the national level has drawn attention and prompted a key inquiry about what infrastructure and superstructure are conducive and supportive for this to occur. A heuristic analysis is conducted to explore the issue. This study reveals that ḥabā’ib’s religious politics have grown in prominence in Indonesia because they have hospitable spaces to grow in accord with the construction of their identity as a social and religious elite group. Meanwhile, this phenomenon is difficult to develop in cultural settings that do not accommodate the expressions of supremacy based on race, ethnicity, or ancestry. The existence of cultural spaces with different inclinations in addressing h}abā’ib’s identity is still constitutionally permitted in Indonesia. Muslims have the wisdom as well as the resilience to manage the struggle for religious and political authority in their respective Islamic cultural environments. The state and government must continue to position themselves as the large tent for the diversity of their people.
