Abstract

This article investigates the relationships between two congregations, Muslims and Confucians, of two places of worship, that is, Al-Ikhlas Mosque and Tri Dharma Temple adjacent to each other in Desa Sadar Kerukunan, Ilir Kota, Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan. These two places of worship together arguably form the icon of tolerance between religious communities. To ensure that a society characterized by religious and ethnic diversity is harmonious, social capital is necessary to bolster the cohesiveness of relationships between individuals and groups. This study is field research with a qualitative approach and a descriptive method. Employing Robert D. Putnam’s theory of social capital encompassing trust, norms, and networks, this study found that firstly, the deep trust of each religious community is well fostered, which is reflected in the practice of inter-religious communities helping each other. Secondly, there are social networks established and preserved by the elite of the two places of worship. Thirdly, social norms encourage all activities related to ethnicity and religious identity to be communicated clearly to all parties. Fourthly, harmony between religious communities around these two places of worship is driven by the same motive to preserve a common interest, that is, the economic aspect.

Abstract

This article investigates the religious and spiritual dimensions of the kris which is a cherised cultural heirloom. This research aims to portray the deepest meaning of the kris according to the kris enthusiasts in East Java. It is essential to see the kris from local knowledge perspectives. In exploring the meaning of the kris as a sacred object, the article puts forth two main questions: how the kris enthusiasts view the kris as a cultural symbol and how religious and spiritual experiences of the kris influence their views on daily life. This research uses a qualitative method with a combination of phenomenology and ethnography approaches. Data collection was through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, with informants selected using purposive sampling. The results of the research show that firstly, the kris enthusiasts view the kris as a religious symbol that helps build their journey of life. The kris is understood as a symbol of noble values and to contain a philosophy of life that is inseparable from other elements, including beliefs, moral values, art, thoughts and practices, thereby being of great importance for the lives of the kris enthusiasts. Secondly, the religious and spiritual experiences of the kris are not limited to external or ritualistic aspects alone, but also encompass the internal dimension that gives birth to spiritual and religious depth, creating a space of meaning for profound human experience.

Abstract

This study examines the Religion Twenty (R21) Forum in Indonesia as a case of interfaith dialogue for peacebuilding. Interfaith dialogue represents a facet of religious inclusion in international relations that has historically been ignored due to the preponderance of secular foundations in realist traditions. Since 11 September 2001, interfaith dialogue has increasingly served as a framework for addressing global religious challenges, including in Indonesia. This study is concerned with exploring the narrative of R20 regarding the emergence, initiation, activities, continuation and criticism of the R20 Forum. The study adopts a qualitative approach. The main question guiding the study is whether the R20 is succeeding in its peacebuilding mission. To solve this puzzle, the study uses the paradigm of interfaith dialogue for change as an analytical framework. This paper argues that the R20 has succeeded in bringing the paradigm of interfaith dialogue for peacebuilding to the fore. However, the continuation of R20 in the future is still in doubt. However, it offers a broader understanding of interfaith dialogue for peacebuilding in Indonesia, enriching knowledge that can inform public policy improvements within the country and serve as a reference for the advancement of interfaith dialogue globally.

Abstract

The Indonesian Law No. 5 of 2018 on the Prevention of the Criminal Acts of Terrorism, which is supposed to be the legal protection for every citizen, has generated resistance, resulting in delegitimization. This study aims to analyze the delegitimization of the anti-terrorism law, resulting in public resistance. The data was collected through observation, interviews and documentation studies in the form of the formulation of the anti-terror law. This study shows that the content of the enacted anti-terrorism law indicates a violation of human rights, which leads to delegitimization. The process of formulating the law without the participation of certain parties is considered counterproductive and makes the law less participatory. These things trigger the emergence of community resistance that leads to the failure of the law or the loss of the substance of the purpose of the legislation. As a result, the image of the government in preventing terrorism and extremism deteriorates, which in turn demonstrates the delegitimization of the law. This paper is limited to measuring the potential failure of the enactment of laws that have been passed and does not evaluate the implementation of anti-terrorism policies. Therefore, further studies are needed that focus on testing the effectiveness of the law by involving stakeholders.

Abstract

The #ArewaMeToo movement in Nigeria is a social media-driven campaign against sexual harassment and gender-based violence. The movement has generated controversy and resistance, prompting a closer examination of its emergence, trajectory, impact, and implications. This study, therefore, examines the emergence and trajectory of the movement and how it has used social media platforms such as Twitter (X) and Facebook to raise awareness about sexual harassment and gender-based violence in northern Nigeria. The movement has attracted significant attention and support, particularly from women who identify themselves as survivors of sexual harassment and who seek to challenge dominant approaches to sexual assault and harassment in the region. Drawing on both secondary and primary sources, this qualitative study provides a comprehensive understanding of the #ArewaMeToo movement and its impact. This research finds the controversial factors that contributed to the Nigerian Sultanate Council’s decision to ban the movement, including the influence of Muslim intellectuals and social media influencers. It also reveals the historical context, key actors, and impact of the movement, as well as the effectiveness of online movements in driving social change.

Abstract

This article describes the condition of Parmalim believers in Aceh Singkil who are marginalized and receive discriminatory treatment. This discriminatory treatment has left Parmalim believers in limbo when it comes to practicing their faith. The number of these believers in the area is decreasing day by day as more and more are converting to state-recognized religions. The research method used is the qualitative research method. The informants in this study consisted of key informants such as the village head, the secretariat of the Parmalim sect, the weekly ritual leader, and the Persantian board, as well as supporting informants, namely Parmalim believers who could provide additional information to enrich the data such as farmers, traders and people who are active in social activities in Parmalim. The results show that social activities and interactions between Parmalim believers and community members of other religions continue to run well. However, the phenomenon of discriminatory treatment against Parmalim believers is still ongoing. Proposals to repair places of worship to the Aceh Singkil Regional Government have never been fulfilled. In the field of education, there are no religious lessons or worship practices to strengthen the children of Parmalim followers. The children of Parmalim believers do not dare to reveal their beliefs, because the religious teachers at school only teach Islamic and Christian religious education.
