Abstract

There are a great number of medicine and cosmetic advertisements in printedmass media. These advertisements are numerous and very productive in term ofexpressing intent so that they emerge interesting language problems to be studied.Lexical and grammatical cohesion markers on those advertisements are written invarious ways. Based on that, the problems of the study are follows: (1) what kind ofcohesion marker developed on medicine and cosmetic advertisements in mass media,(2) how is the form of sentences applied on medicine and cosmetic advertisements.Data collecting method applied in this research is observation method with notingtechnique. The collected data from that technique is then analyzed by distributionalmethod with techniques of substitution, ellipsis, and reading mark.Based on 15 data of discourses in medicine and cosmetic advertisement, it isfound that the lexical and grammatical cohesion markers on those discourse areellipsis, substitution, and repetition. The forms of sentences applied in the discoursesof medicine and cosmetics advertisement are around 1-14 numerous. There arearound 1-14 sentences applied in discourses of medicine and cosmetic advertisement.Based on the analysis of functional structure to sentences used in the discourse,there are 33 functional structures.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to produce a model of TQA from English into Indonesian. It employed a descriptive-qualitative approach. Its data were obtained through content analysis, interviewing with key informants, FGD and observation, and analyzed with an interactive data analysis technique. The final findings of this research indicate the followings. First, the Model of TQA produced assesses the quality of translation holistically. Second, the Model is applicable for assessing the quality of translation within the contexts of translation research and teaching and of professional settings. Third, the Model opens opportunities for raters to assess various units of translation, ranging from micro to macro levels. Fourth, the effectiveness of the Model in assessing quality of translation depends solely on the ability of the assessors or raters in applying it in various settings. Prior to its application, those engaged in every translation quality assessment should read and understand all relevant information and procedures of how it should be employed.

Abstract

The study is about a close look at Conrads trans-racial romance related to the Victorian period. Trans-racial love between white men and non-white women becomes a popular theme in the early works of Josep Conrad, a famous writer of the late Victorian period. Using a closely technical reading in the three of Conrads works Lord Jim, Almayers Folly, and An Outcast of the Island, we can show that such a trans-racial romance is not merely meant for appreciating equivalence. In turn, the trans-racial romance of Conrads can be understood as the reflection of the Western colonization on the East where the white men take a role as subjects who had dominately explored while the non-white women as objects who are passively being explored.Key words: colonization, race, romance plot, subject, object, and dominance

Abstract

Siswa kelas VII B SMP Negeri 2 Musuk mengalami kesulitan menuangkan ide-ide dalam tulisan. Untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut, penelitian tindakan kelas ini menggunakan model pembelajaran eksperiental. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengamati apakah menulis melalui Model eksperiental dapat mengembangkan kemampuan siswa di kelas VII B SMP Negeri 2 Musuk dalam menuangkan ide-ide mereka secara tertulis. Penelitian ini menggunakan model Kemmis dan Mc. Taggart dan dilakukan pada bulan Februari untuk Mei 2011. Kegiatan riset dilakukan dalam empat tahap, dan masing-masing tahap dilakukan dalam tiga siklus. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi, kuesioner, wawancara, dan portofolio. Data kemudian dianalisis dengan pendekatan deskriptif-kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran model eksperiental dapat menghasilkan hasil yang baik yaitu 75% dari total siswa bisa menempatkan ide-ide mereka secara tertulis dengan jelas. Prestasi akademik siswa juga mengalami peningkatan, dan hal ini berarti bahwa Experiential Model sangat efektif untuk meningkatkan  kegiatan belajar menulis.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to describe the appearance of the word “reform”, its position in a phrase, other word categories likely to combine, its meaning, and its growth of usage. The method of analysis used is comparison with the technique of referensial, pragmatic, and identification. The result shows that first, constituent cat- egories of reform word are three: word, phrase, and clause. Second, constituent cat- egory of reform word consisted of the word fundamental (reform), verb. (reform), and noun (reformism). Third, the phrase categories of the reform word consisted of the NP, VP, and Preposition P. Fourth, the clause categories consisted of the reform constituent as fillers of S function, P function, C function, O function, topic function, and as clause structure. Key words: reform, constituent, category, dan teknik baca markah.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini untuk memaparkan bahasa kiasan dan bentuk stilistik dalamnovel Dukuh Paruk (RDP) dan meneliti fungsi dan tujuan penggunaan bahasa kiasandan bentuk stilistik tersebut sebagai ungkapan penulis dalam menuangkan ide-idenya.Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif. Data dianalisis secara induktif denganmenerapkan metode membaca semiotik yang bersifat heuristik dan hermeneutik.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahasa kiasan RDP memiliki keunikan dan keaslian,yang membuktikan kompetensi Tohari dalam menggunakan bahasa. Keaslian bahasakiasan yang mendominasi RDP dapat dilihat dari gaya majas dan idiom yang indahdan beranekaragam, penuh ekspresif, asosiatif dan memiliki daya estetika. Hal inimenunjukkan bahwa Tohari adalah seorang penulis yang memiliki intelektualitastinggi. Melalui penelitian stilistik, ditarik simpulan bahwa bahasa kiasan RDPmempunyai ekspresif yang kuat sebagai media penuangan ide penulis yang tidakjauh dari latar belakang sosial historis.Kata Kunci: stilistika, bahasa figuratif, ronggeng, majas, idiom, estetik.

Abstract

A predicate of a passive sentence in Japanese can be filled in by a transitive,ditransitif, and intransitive verb. Passive sentences with intransitive verbs as the predicates commonly express oppositive meaning. Linguists commonly classify this type of passive sentence regarding only to its syntactical function and category. This study however investigates passive intransitive sentences regarding not only their syntactical function and category, but also their semantic construction. The study finds five types of syntactical construction of passive intransitive (I~V). Each type of the passive is distinguished by the semantic information of its modifiers.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan minat dan kualitas proses belajar mengajar bahasa Inggris siswa, khususnya pada keterampilan listening. Peningkatan minat dilakukan melalui penggunaan media audio visual dengan metode bermain peran (role playing) yang diharapkan dapat memberikan peluang penciptaan kondisi pembelajaran yang menyenangkan. Pada siklus ketiga tindakan penelitian kelas ini didapatkan hasil yang optimal di mana siswa yang berminat dalam mengikuti pelajaran Bahasa Inggris dapat meningkat secara signifikan. Penelitian ini berbentuk Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) yang dilakukan dalam tiga siklus. Ketiga siklus tersebut mencakup tahapan yang sama, tetapi dengan media yang berbeda. Siklus 1 menggunakan media TV, siklus 2 menggunakan media kaset dan tape, dan siklus 3 menggunakan media VCD, yang terdiri atas empat tahap: perencanaan, pelaksanaan tindakan, pengamatan, dan refleksi. Tindakan dapat dilakukan dengan cara penerapan pembelajaran dengan media audio visual dan dilanjutkan dengan metode bermain peran. Penelitian ini dilakukan terhadap 40 siswa kelas VIII D SMP N 1 Klaten. Respon kemajuan minat siswa diperoleh dari hasil angket siswa, wawancara siswa, learning log siswa, observasi, wawancara antar guru, jurnal guru, hasil ulangan harian dan tugas. Validasi instrumen dilakukan dengan refleksi kritis antar guru peneliti dan secara face validity. Validasi data dilakukan dengan triangulasi observasi dari aspek siswa, guru dan guru mitra. Hasil refleksi tiap siklus digunakan untuk merencanakan langkah-langkah lanjutan. Hasil tindakan menunjukkan tingkat minat siswa sebesar 72,5% (siklus 1), 77,5% (siklus 2) dan 82,5% (siklus 3) dari hasil catatan learning logs siswa. Jadi, antar siklus terjadi peningkatan minat masing-masing sebesar 5% (siklus 1 ke siklus 2), 5% (siklus 2 ke siklus 3), 10% (siklus 1 ke 3). Hasil angket menunjukkan tingkat minat siswa sebesar 62,5% (siklus 1) dan 82,5% (siklus 2) serta 87,5% (siklus 3), sehingga terjadi peningkatan minat; 19.7% (siklus 1 ke siklus 2); 5% (siklus 2 ke siklus 3); 25%(siklus 1 ke siklus 3). Ketiga siklus tindakan tersebut ternyata banyak siswa yang tertarik belajar bahasa inggris dengan media audio visul. Secara kualitatif, suasana pembelajaran bahasa Inggris menjadi lebih menyenangkan dan menciptakan efek-efek positif terhadap perkembangan belajar siswa.Kata kunci: minat belajar, pembelajaran menyimak, media audio visual

Abstract

Teaching large classes often produces a lot of problems. One of the efforts to minimize the problems is by empowering the students in the learning process. One of the teaching techniques that can empower learners is a group work presentation task. Hence, the objective of this paper is to share a discussion that can be used to optimize the application of a group work presentation task. To get the optimal result, an action research is conducted. Two cycles are applied. The data are taken by observing the learning process when an action is applied, by interviewing the learners involved and by discussing the results with the collaborators. The research shows that group work presentation task can work well when participatory evalu- ation is applied. Key word: Group Presentation Task, Participatory Evaluation, and cycle. Â
