Abstract

This study examines the use of languages by foreign students in learning the Indonesian language for foreign speakers (BIPA). Sociolinguistic approach is employed in which in-depth interview is used to elicit the reseach data. Sociolinguistic analysis is conducted by considering the social context of the speech components. The results show that the dominant use of Indonesian language by the learners is the language of instruction acquired in the process of learning the language. English emerges as the language of mediation between teachers and students spoken when they have difficulties in learning. Another language that appears in the language learning is Javanese which is the vernacular of Surakarta. Aspects of Indonesian cultural context should be taught to the learners. A variety of language styles for formal and informal conversation must be understood by foreign students so as to avoid errors in language usage.

Abstract

This paper deals with promoting knowledge of pragmatics which focuses on the knowledge of the illocutionary acts and conversational implicatures to students of English education and English literature study program. It is aimed at describing types of illocutionary acts, illocutionary forces, and conversational implicatures in the context of undergraduate thesis examination. Such types of knowledge of the illocutionary and implicatures are great importance for those students as it confers a clear description of use of speech acts in the context of the undergraduate thesis examination. In reference to these issues, students of English education and English literature study program should be familiar with five types of illocutionary acts which include (1) representatives, (2) directives, (3) commissive, (4) expressive, and (5) declarative. Besides, they are encouraged to clearly understand the nature of the illocutionary forces of each illocutionary act which guides them to make sense of the intentions as performed in the illocutionary act. Added to this, knowledge of conversational implicatures used in undergraduate thesis examination should be clearly understood. The types of implicatures include generalized conversational implicatures and particularized conversational implicatures. This suggests that students who are going to defend their undergraduate thesis draft should be well-prepared and familiar with the types of illocutionary forces and conversational implicatures in order that mis-conception and mis-interpretation of speech acts employed by examiners can be minimized.

Abstract

language ecology was proposed by Einar Haugen in 1972 as the study of the interaction of any given language and its environment. Despite some use of the term in the literature, sociolinguistics have failed to develop the potenstial that Haugen saw in an ecological approach. Recent developments in ecological thought, however; when applied to language, raise questions about many basic assumptions of conventional linguistics. For example, from an ecological perspective, language is not a rule-governed system, but a form of patterned behaviour arising from the needs of human socialtity: communication, culture, and community. As Haugen foresaw, language ecology offers an exciting alternative approach to linguistic theory.Key words: language ecology, patterned behaviour, holistic, dynamic, and interactiveÂ
