Abstract

This study aims to identify the needs of Buginese learners in mastering English in the crash course program at Neroa School, a non-formal English course institution in Soppeng Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This research method was a descriptive research. The instrument used by the researcher to collect data was a questionnaire that was previously validated by an expert. In processing data of the questionnaire, the researcher implemented an approach including stages of presentation of descriptive statistics. This approach refers to Gay (2012), Johnson Christensen (2014), and each analysis phase adopts Nur (2015). There were five basic components represented in the questionnaire including general information, skills background of English, difficulties in learning English, learning material expectation, and learning process Expectation. The results of the study narrowed to a conclusion that respondents were generally teenagers aged 15-18 years who had difficulties in speaking and pronunciation, and lacked environmental support but had great motivation to achieve English language independence in a short time without disturbing their activities in formal education. Therefore, respondents in general were more likely to follow the crash course program which was divided into small groups of at least 1 to 3 months.

Abstract

The aim of this mix-method study is to design a speaking assessment rubric for an English Immersion Camp (EIC) program in Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku called UMMU English Immersion Camp (UEIC). In UEIC, there were seven activities applied for triggering the participants to continuously speak English during the program (see Syahidah, Umasugi, Buamona, 2019). However, the program did not have a proper assessment form to measure the UEIC participants’ speaking development. Therefore, this study was administered to design the assessment in the form of a speaking rubric. Three instruments were used to gather the data for designing the rubric. Interviews were adminstered to two experts of English language assessment who have been having years of experince in teaching English at the university. Document analyses were done to analyze the UEIC syllabus from previous studies and speaking rubrics from various sources to make a match between the design of the assessment instrument with the UEIC achievement targets, objectives, materials, and learning techniques. Observations were conducted by four observers who were fasilitators at the UEIC to measure the participants’ speaking progress. Data from obervations were used to test the validity and reliability of the rubric. The speaking assessment rubric was designed based on the steps of designing speaking assessment proposed by O’Malley and Pierce (1996) which are identifying the purposes of speaking assessment, planning speaking assessment, developing speaking test rubric and setting standards. The rubric contained ten items divided into six aspects of speaking assessments namely (1) grammar, (2) vocabulary, (3) pronunciation, (4) fluency, and (5) comprehenesibility respectively represented into two items, and (6) accuracy measured by three items. Moreover, the validity and reliability analyses showed that the rubric containing 10 items were valid and reliable because all values needed have reached the theoretical standard value for validity and reliability of a speaking test instrument.

Abstract

One of the factors that affect a person's learning outcomes is their learning style(Aryo Andri Nugroho, Ida Dwijayanti 2017). The division of student classes, taking into account each individual's learning styles; will greatly aid instructors in preparing teaching methods and materials that are appropriate for the students' learning styles. The VAK (Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic) learning style was developed by Rita Dunn and Kennenth Dunn(Lehmann dan Ifenthaler 2012). Children with visual learning styles typically learn through external visual relationships, children with auditory learning styles learn more easily through listening, and children with kinesthetic learning styles learn through physical movements to input information into their brain(Sari n.d.).The aim of this study is to describe the results of the VAK analysis of the learning style (visual, auditory and kinesthetic) of students in the UKI Toraja PGSD study program in order to address issues related to the National Research Master Plan (RIRN) on Social Humanities, Cultural Arts, and education bureau can solve. Domestic studies on educational and learning technology. This research will be carried out in 3 (three) stages. The first phase was to observe the VAK (Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic) learning style of the UKI Toraja PGSD study program students. In the second phase, data was collected and direct interviews were conducted with relevant sources on the VAK (Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic) learning style of students in the UKI Toraja PGSD study program. The third phase is to manage and analyze the results of face-to- face interviews and to publish the results of research on the VAK learning styles (visual, auditory and kinesthetic) of students in the UKI Toraja PGSD study program. The results of the analysis of the VAK learning style of students in the UKI Toraja PGSD study program for the 2019/2020 academic year. These are then grouped into 6 subsections of learning styles that are common to students, namely: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic. The data analysis used in this study is a descriptive analysis using statistical methods. Based on the results of the analysis of the study style questionnaire of 2018 UKI Toraja PGSD students, of which the respondents were 282 students, the auditory was 34.2%, the visual 44.7% and the kinesthetic 21.1%. From the above data, it can be concluded that the class of PGSD students in 2018 has a predominantly visual learning style.

Abstract

This research had the objective to measure the effectiveness of ASSURE teaching model in the integration of technology and learning media in the process of virtual-based English learning. One class comprising of 20 students of 6th grade was chosen as the sample of this study. A quantitative descriptive method was applied by using both pre-and post-tests as the instruments in collecting the data. In analyzing the data, the average score difference gained by the students in these two tests was firstly measured before they were further calculated through the 'Paired sample t-test'. The analysis revealed that the mean score reached by the students in the post-test (80.75) was higher than their performance in the pre-test (56). Additionally, the t-test score hit by these students was 14.14; bigger than the value of the t-table (1.73) in the significance level of 5% (0.05). This also explained that ASSURE teaching model as variable X significantly influenced students' English achievement (variable Y).  These findings confirmed that in the integration of technology and learning media in English virtual instruction, ASSURE teaching model was effective in increasing students' English achievements.
