Abstract

Purple fleshed sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is one of the natural ingredients that contain natural colour pigments are anthocyanin. Anthocyanin is a water soluble pigments which is naturally found in various type of plants. This study aims to make lipstick preparations using the purple fleshed sweet potato extract (Ipomoea batatas L.) as a natural dye. The method is used to get anthocyanin as a color of lipstick by using maceration extraction method. The weight of sample is 250 grams of dried fleshed purple sweet potato. The liquid for maceration used of 95% ethanol. The condition of maceration is acid by using 2% of citric acid. The filtrate of maceration process must be thickened. The basis of lipstick components consisted of cera alba, lanolin, cetyl alcohol, paraffin solid, oleum ricini, propylene glycol, and nipasol. The concentration of fleshed purple sweet potato extract is 0%, 2.4%, 4.5% and 14.6%. The result of research is that the lipstick is easy to apply, unstable color, homogenous, melting point above 500C, pH of 6 and all lipstick have an breaking point when load at 330 grams. Extract of purple fleshed sweet potato can’t be used as a pigment color in the manufacture of lipstick but additional material is needed that can keep the lipstick color from being degraded by pH, storage temperature, light, enzymes, oxygenation, sugar, structural differences in anthocyanins and concentrations of anthocyanins.

Abstract

Empty oil palm bunches are the largest solid waste produced from the palm oil industry processing. In processing 1 ton of fresh palm oil bunches, 230 Kg of empty palm oil bunches will be produced. Based on previous research, it is known that oil palm empty fruit bunches waste is proven to have a large amount of organic mass such as cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin. Organic content as mentioned is rich in benefits so that it can be used as raw material for making daily needs products ranging from food to complementary products such as household appliances, clothing and so on. For this reason, a study was conducted on the content of oil palm empty bunches originating from waste at PT. Kharisma Alam Persada. The characterization process was carried out using the SNI method 0128911992. From the research carried out it was found that the cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin content were 55.75%; 28.93% and 15.32% respectively. So that it is possible to be used as raw material for processing other products.

Abstract

Virgin olive oil contains phenolic compounds that were potential for anti-inflammatory and cancer treatment. Computational biology is a beneficial method to understand how this compound can affect the biological process in humans. This research is conducted by the potential screening of VOO compounds, constructing the pharmacological network and enrichment, and docking simulation. The enrichment result showed that the EGFR, BRAF, MAPK1, CCND1, and MDM2 protein have multiple cancer contributions and related pathways. The docking simulation result showed that the interaction of EGFR-luteolin, BRAF-luteolin, MAPK1-luteolin, CCND1-apigenin, and MDM2-1-hydroxypinoresinol has the highest binding affinity. Further research with the in-vitro method is required to check the reliable mechanisms of each compound to their protein target.

Abstract

Bitter Gourd or bitter melon (Momordica Charantia L.) is a common type of vegetable and safe for daily consumption. The seeds are part of bitter gourd that useless. Research on bitter melon seed oil has promising commercial applications. This study aims to determine the antioxidant potential and safety of bitter melon seed oil through acute toxicity study. The content of phenols, flavonoids, and antioxidant activity was analyzed. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH method. Antioxidant activity is expressed as an IC-50 value. The results showed that the phenol content of bitter melon seed oil was 0.0118 ±0.0006%, the flavonoid content was 0.0127±0.0004%. From the antioxidant activity study, the IC-50 of vitamin C was 2.41 μg / ml, while an IC-50 of bitter melon seed oil was 11.31 ± 0.77 mg/ml. The results of this antioxidant activity study showed very weak activity. The results of the acute-toxicity study show LD-50 cannot be determined precisely because up to the highest dose of 100 ml/kg does not cause death even though it causes toxic symptoms such as diarrhea. Overall, test results indicate that bitter melon seed oil is a compound that is categorized as practically non-toxic with low antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Obesity has a role in the development of diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hyperlipidemia which is characterized by the increase of adipose tissue mass due to an imbalance of energy intake and expenditure. Freeze-dried fruits are well known to possess antiobesity activity. In this study, we have evaluated the antiobesity activity of freeze-dried fruit (M. domestica, Canarium sp., and A. bilimbi) using CHOL, G6PDH, TG level, and Oil Red O assay. The viability of 3T3-L1 cell in the Canarium sp. freeze-dried in the concentration of 12.50 µg/ml has a higher value compared to M. domestica and A. bilimbi. The measurements of CHOL, G6PDH, TG level, and Oil Red O assay of the M. domestica freeze-dried in the concentration of 75 μg/ml has higher inhibitory activity compared to the Canarium sp. and A. bilimbi freeze-dried. In the CHOL assay, M. domestica freeze-dried has a higher value compared to A. bilimbi and Canarium sp. In the G6PDH assay, the freeze-dried of M. domestica has the value of 49.56%, Canarium sp. (45.22%), and A. bilimbi (47.13%), while in the Oil Red O assay, M. domestica has inhibition activity of 62.63%, A. bilimbi 50.01% and Canarium sp. 44.13%. The level of TG showed that M. domestica has higher activity with the value of 60.61%, A. bilimbi 57.54%, while Canarium sp. 55.03%. The freeze-dried of M. domestica in the concentration of 75 μg/ml has good inhibitory activity of lipid compared to A. bilimbi and Canarium sp.

Abstract

Candidiasis is the most common fungal infection in humans and is a form of primary and secondary infections of C. albicans. Betel (Piper betle L.) leaf extract has been reported to exhibit efficacious antifungal effects against C. albicans. Emulsion gels, a type of topical dosage form, can deliver hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs and perform multiple and controlled releases. This research aimed to determine the antifungal activity and physical properties of emulsion gels formulated from betel leaf extract. The dried betel leaves were extracted by maceration with alcohol 95%. Then, with different concentrations (1, 2, and 4%), the extract was formulated into emulsion gels. These dosage forms were later subjected to antifungal activity testing against C. albicans using the cup plate diffusion method that involved Mycoral Cream® for comparison. In this test, the intensity of the activity was determined by measuring the diameter of the formed inhibition zone. The second test evaluated the physical characteristics of the dosage forms, including organoleptic properties, pH, adhesion, dispersion, and viscosity. These data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney method, and the conclusion was withdrawn from describing the results quantitatively. The reaction yield of the extraction was 9.702%. The analysis results showed that emulsion gels containing 1, 2, and 4% of betel leaf extract created zones of inhibition with diameters of 5.3 ± 0.29, 6.2 ± 0.29, and 10.2 ± 0.41 mm, respectively. As for the physical properties, they differed in pH (6.39 ± 0.120, 6.17 ± 0.132, 5.66 ± 0.123), spreadability (1.849 ± 0.45, 1.816 ± 0.051, 1.771 ± 0.092 g.cm.s-1), adhesion (110 ± 10.8, 126.3 ± 8.5, 142.7 ± 13.50 seconds), and viscosity (2640.35, 1992.95, 2162.12 cps), respectively. The betel leaf emulsion gels exhibited antifungal activity against C. albicans (p <0.05) and met the physical requirements of semi-solid dosage forms.

Abstract

Hyperglycemia that occurs in diabetic Mellitus leads to glycation reactions in protein molecules and oxidative stress resulting in damage to cells and organs. Swiftlet’s nest believed society could lower blood glucose. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of Swiftlet’s nest (Collocalia fuciphago) extract on glucose level, Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) activity in blood serum. The study used Posttest-Only with Control Group Design, consisting of 1 control group (given aqua dest) and 3 treatment groups (dose 1; 10 and 100 mg/kg BW). Each group consisted of 6 Rattus norvegicius. Before being treated, Streptozotocin-induced rat at a dose of 68 mg/kg BW intraperitoneal. On the 7th day after induction, rats had elevated glucose ± 102 - 108 mg/dL. Then the rats were given water extract Swiftlet’s nest for 28 days orally. All data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by the Mann-Whitney test, with a 95% confidence level. The results of blood glucose levels in each group (K, P1, P2 and P3) were 111.0 vs 88.5 vs 86 vs 83 mg / dL (p = 0.035), MDA levels experienced an increase in the treatment group compared to controls namely 193.50 vs 193.83 vs. 198.50 nmol / mL, p = 0.001. While the SOD enzyme activity has increased, namely 0.0050 vs. 0.0075 vs. 0.0263%. In conclusion, Swiftlet’s nest water extract can reduce blood glucose levels and increase MDA levels and SOD enzyme activity in blood serum.

Abstract

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common chronic neurodegenerative disease with well-defined pathophysiological mechanisms. Ilex kudingcha (IK) C.J. Tseng is commonly known as bitter tea or “Khom” tea in Vietnam. The present study was conducted to investigate the anti-dementia effect of IK using olfactory bulbectomized (OBX) mice. OBX mice were daily treated with IK extract (540 mg/kg) or reference drug, tacrine (2.5 mg/kg) 1 week before and continuously for 3 days after the OBX surgery. The object recognition test, modified Y maze test and fear conditioning test were employed to analyze non-spatial short-term, spatial short-term and long-term memories of the mice respectively. Administration of IK extract and tacrine attenuated these OBX-induced cognitive deficits in mice. The effects of IK and tacrine on spatial short-term memory impairment were reversed by scopolamine, a muscarinic receptor antagonist. The amyloid-beta (Aβ) production in adult transgenic Drosophila brain flies was also investigated by using Western blotting with APP-HA antibody. These results indicated that IK extract improves short-term and long-term memory disturbances in OBX mice and that muscarinic receptor may play a role on these actions. In addition, our result also showed that IK extract reduces the expression of amyloid precursor protein (APP) in brain of AD model using Drosophila melanogaster.

Abstract

Papaya leaves have been using for wound healing that contains flavonoids, saponins, phenolics, chymopapain, and papain enzymes. The aim of this research were preparation, characterization, and wound healing activity of papaya leaves extract on spray gel. Spray gel was formulated with variation of gelling agent such as carbopol 940, HPMC, gellan gum, and hydroxyethylcellulose. The spray gel were characterizated by organoleptic, pH, stickiness test, viscosity, homogeneity, weight, and wound healing activity in rats. The results showed were all of formula spray gel have brown and homogeneous, pH between 5,947-6,347 within pH range of skin, stickiness test between 1,92-8,12 s, viscosity between 880-1740 cPs. Papaya leaves extract on spray gel has wound healing activity in rats faster than extract and positive control that is 16 days. The wound healing of papaya leaves extract on spray gel exhibited significantly different (p<0,05) than negative control.

Abstract

Peptic ulcers are one of the global health problems in the world. However, most of these drugs have unwanted side effects and drug interactions that this research focuses on the use of plant products as an anti gastric ulcer. The phytochemical of Passiflora foetida L. leaves or better known by the name of the Central Borneo with 'Cemot' such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannin has potential as a gastroprotective. This study used the method of extraction of non-conventional, namely the UAE, because it has advantages compared with other conventional methods. This study aims to investigate the gastroprotective activities of ethanol extract of Passiflora foetida leaves-UAE. Cemot extract was obtained by UAE method using a concentration of ethanol (70%), the ratio of sample/liquid (10g/mL) for 3 minutes. Three groups of rats treated with a respective dose of the extract (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg BW), one group of rats treated with omeprazole 36 mg/kg BW for seven days before peptic ulcer induction using ethanol. The activity gastroprotective with measurement of lesion of gastric ulcer index and the percentage of inhibition ulcer. Group of rats treated with 200 mg/kg BW extract showed a decreased the ulcer index and ulcer inhibition than the other extract dosage groups, respectively 2.83 and 35.34%. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study concluded that the cemot extract has potential as a gastroprotective.
