Abstract

Communication strategy is the way to help the speakers when facing difficulties in communication using English as a second language. This case study, at the first year students of English Department, aims to know the most frequent students’ strategies to communicate in speaking activity in speaking class. It is  found that thirteen communication strategies were used by the students in speaking English class, but not all of the communication strategies were used in every conversation, but only certain communication strategy was used. It depends on  the materials difficulties. Furhermore, the most frequent  communication strategies is stalling or time gaining strategy. As they need some time to think and then continue talking after they find the right words they need to communicate. This findings is in line with the propossed theory stated that communication strategy is defined as a systematic technique employed by a speaker to express his or her meaning when facing certain difficulties in communication.

Abstract

Review words is type of vocabulary building which is the easiest way to checking how is the students’ understanding dealing with the previous vocabulary given, especially for college students. Classroom observation research was used as the method in this study. The method is divided into some stages namely review, reduce, recycle, vocab college, role reversal, word soup, and vocab box.  It is a method of straightly observing teaching process, which the observer taking notes, and/or coding instructional performances in the classroom or from recorded activities or lesson. It is going to define some steps that we need to apply the review words. Moreover, it is still important to upgrading collage students’ vocabulary because English as EFL will be very difficult term to reach when they are not seriously concern about the vocabulary. This paper will discuss the importance of using review words in checking students understanding in the certain level of English skill.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of reading conference technique in teaching reading of EFL learners. Thirty two learners consisting of 12 males and 20 females from the second grade of English Department at Nusantara PGRI Kediri University were participated in the study. To conduct the study, pre-test were administered before applying treatment, while post-test were administered after applying treatment. Quantitative method and pre-experimental approach were applied in this present study and t- test was used to analyze the data. The analyses resulted in the finding that the score of post-test exhibited significantly better than the score of pre-test. Thus, it can be said that reading conference is effective in teaching reading at the second grade learners of English Department at Nusantara PGRI Kediri University.

Abstract

The main purpose of teaching learning English in Junior High School to develop the students? competence and knowledge in four language skills, Speaking, Reading, Listening and Writing. One of the difficult skills is writing. In this research are describe how are the uses, problems, and solutions of the use of Literacy Approach to Teach Writing of Descriptive Text At The Seventh Grade Students of SMPN 1 Ngebel in Schooling Years 2013/2014.  Literacy approach is one of the approaches used to teach writing especially in descriptive text because Literacy approach is the ability to read and write. There are some step of teaching writing, they are planning, composing, and revising. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. Participant/Informant of the research are the English teacher and the seventh grade students of SMPN I Ngebel Ponorogo. This research uses purposive sampling technique. The techniques which are used to collect the data are observation, interview, and documentation. Techniques of the data analysis are data reduction, data display and drawing conclusions. The result of the analyzing data indicates that the uses of literacy approach in teaching writing of descriptive text are divided into two steps. The first is preparation steps and the second is learning process. The learning process uses literacy approach includes introduce and giving explanation the descriptive text, give the modal of the descriptive text and have text to analyze, make group work to discussion the students? ideas, give the chance to make students? own product and also checking the students? understanding about the material. Besides, the problem of the use literacy approach in writing of descriptive text are sometimes the students are noisy in the classroom and their vocabulary are still low. The students feel afraid to deliver their opinion and ideas in teaching and learning process. The solution of the use literacy approach in writing of descriptive are the students must make group work of the students? worksheet, Teacher controls the students and gives scores for students.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are: (1) to describe teaching daily speaking by using telephone through question and answer technique, (2) to describe the advantages and disadvantages of teaching daily speaking by using telephone through question and answer technique to the first grade students of Department of English Teaching IKIP PGRI Madiun in the schooling year of 2013/2014.In this research, the researcher takes five students of 1B from the Department of English Teaching IKIP PGRI Madiun as the sample. The researcher uses purposive sampling technique. To get the data, the researcher uses observation, interview, and documentation. In this research, analysis data is done by using descriptive analysis qualitative.The results of the research are: (1) the use of telephone through question and answer technique in teaching daily speaking to the first grade students of Department of English Teaching IKIP PGRI Madiun is divided into three steps, namely pre- activity, whilst-activity, and post-activity, (2) The advantages of using  telephone through question and answer technique in teaching daily speaking to the first grade students of Department of English Teaching IKIP PGRI Madiun are: the use of telephone through question and answer technique in teaching daily speaking can increase students’ scores, it makes enjoyable learning, students can focus on teaching learning process, the students have a good chance to practice with their friends in the group. This makes them more active in learning speaking, Last, the use of telephone through question and answer technique increases the students’ confidence. Meanwhile, the disadvantages are: the class becomes noisy when the students practice with their friends in the group, and some students have low vocabularies so that the students can not speak fluently.

Abstract

Critical thinking may be considered as an essential substance contributing to the success of students learning a language, in this English. Some skills in English such as listening, speaking, reading and writing can be successfully achieved whenever students were critical, since critical thinking is also the ability allowing the students to express everything freely. Unfortunately, utilizing critical thinking is not as simple as seen. There should be a regular and consistent process done to encourage the students to be critical. Thus, some approaches, methods, techniques or media need to be applied in order to succeed the achievement of being critical thinkers. Thus, this paper reveals some theories and practices based on reviewing some articles of critical thinking in English Language Teaching (ELT).

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to present an analysis of interference effect, a factor that plays an important role in inhibiting the acquisition of English among seventh grade students of MTs Darul Ulum, Sukosewu, Bojonegoro, East Java. The data substantiating the discussion throughout this article came from an empirical study of errors in essays written by seventh grade students of MTs Darul Ulum in the academic year of 2015/2016. The participants were all students in 7A class consisting of 30 students. The participants were chosen by cluster random sampling. The findings of the study show that the learners are still having difficulty in using correct English grammar in their writings. The three most frequent errors are: 1) the use of articles, 2) subject-verb agreement, and 3) copula ‘be’.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to identify the words level equivalence are used by the translator in translating abbreviation found in The Jakarta Post based on the classification of word level equivalence. The researcher applies descriptive qualitative method in carrying out the research. The researcher uses documentation technique. In this study, the researcher uses data source and methodological triangulation. The researcher uses data reduction, data display, and conclusion to analyzing the data. It is in order to describe the fact in The Jakarta Post daily newspaper during February 2012. Some abbreviations were studied. After analyzing the strategies of Indonesian – English translation of abbreviation found in The Jakarta Post, some points can be drawn as follows: (1) translation  by more  general  word  (super ordinate) (because of the  hierarchical  structure of semantic  fields  is  not  language  specific),  (2)  translation  by  more  neutral/less  expressive  word (because the target language has no direct equivalent word), (3) translation using loan or loan word plus explanation (culture specific items, modern concepts and buzz words), (4) translation by paraphrase using related words (when the concept expressed by the source item is lexicalized in the target language but in different form), (5) translation by omission (if the meaning conveyed by certain item or expression is not vital enough), (6) translation by more specific word(subordinate) the target language lacks a super ordinate), and (7) accurate translation (the closest equivalent).

Abstract

The aim of the study is to increase speaking skill in descriptive text by the using of favorite picture media. It is found that there are many students have less interest and activity during English lesson, especially in speaking material. It is because the students get bored during the lesson and the teacher teaches monotonously.. The research design is class action research. Population of this study are 34 students of X MIPA 6 grade SMAN 1 Kawedanan Magetan in first semester, academic year 2017/2018. This research is conducted in two cycles, and each cycle consists of: (1) plan; (2) action implementation; (3) observation; (4) reflection and evaluation. The result of this research shows that in the second cycle, there are 88% or 30 students have good activity during learning process and students’ learning result in average have gained 80 grade, which is maximum passing criteria (KKM) in English lesson is 75. In conclusion, the application of favorite picture media is able to increase speaking skill in the form of descriptive text.

Abstract

Film is one of the popular literary product that are produced to entertain. Film is the object material for this research study. This research analyzes about espionage in Salt film. It analyzes focus in Espionage that happen in the world. Espionage practices in Salt film are related closely to the espionage in the world. The aim of this research is to analyze why is the espionage still exist up to 21st century. A study of popular literature is chosen by the researcher in order to analyze the research problems. The results of the research are to show that United States is the winner of Cold War with its espionage activity. Salt is an espionage film that contains the high intelligence, secret cover, spy cases, and war of ideology. The development of espionage films where Hollywood always makes United States as the winner is the evident that espionage film is populer. The popularity of espionage films is influenced by the espionage practices in the real world. Espionage in the 21st century still occurs in some countries with difference motives. The purposes of the espionage activities are to show the superiority, power and existence of some countries especially United States as an international police in the world.
