Abstract

Background: Libraries are often perceived as neutral institutions that provide access to information, support literacy, and preserve cultural heritage. However, recent cases of censorship, book banning, leadership intervention, and professional self-censorship show that libraries are frequently shaped by political and ideological pressures. Previous studies have largely examined censorship as isolated cases, leaving limited attention to the broader power relations that structure library governance, collection policies, and public access to knowledge. Objective: This study aims to analyze how political interventions occur within library institutions, examine their impacts on intellectual freedom and public access, and apply the political economy of information perspective to understand the power relations embedded in library governance and knowledge control. Methods: This study employs a critical qualitative approach with a multiple case study design. Data were collected through document analysis and literature review, including policy documents, academic studies, media reports, advocacy reports, and library-related archives. The analysis was conducted using Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), supported by source triangulation, audit trails, and reflexive reading to strengthen credibility and trustworthiness. Results: The findings show that libraries are not neutral spaces, but contested arenas where political, ideological, economic, and professional interests shape access to knowledge. The dismissal of Carla Hayden as Librarian of Congress, the banning of leftist literature in Indonesia, and practices of censorship and self-censorship among librarians demonstrate that political intervention operates through leadership control, collection restriction, professional gatekeeping, and access management. These interventions reduce knowledge diversity, weaken professional autonomy, and reproduce dominant ideologies through library practices. Conclusion: This study argues that libraries function both as democratic institutions for public access and as potential instruments of ideological control. By applying the political economy of information, it shows that libraries are contested sites where knowledge is produced, regulated, and distributed through power relations. The findings highlight the need for critical librarianship, transparent collection policies, protection of professional autonomy, and stronger collaboration among libraries, policymakers, academics, and civil society to resist censorship and promote inclusive access to knowledge.

Abstract

Background: In the era of digital transformation, archival institutions are required to not only manage administrative documents but also to build a more strategic and representative institutional image. The use of social media, such as YouTube, Instagram, or Facebook, becomes a strategic tool to build brand visibility and expand an institution’s public communication reach. Objective: This study aimed to analyze strategies for increasing the visibility of the UI Archives Office through social media. The study focuses on the types of YouTube content published by the Universitas Indonesia (UI) Archives Office and audience engagement with the posted uploads. Methods: The units of analysis include content themes, information presentation, audience engagement, and their potential contribution to strengthening the visibility of the UI Archive Office. Results: The study found that despite the educational and informative content presented, the UI Archives Office’s YouTube channel has not optimally built a strong visual narrative or engaged audience participation. The visual narrative used tends to be formal and lacks the use of Call-to-Action (CTA) elements that could build an emotional connection with the audience. Conclusion: These results indicate that YouTube has great potential as a branding medium for institutions, but it requires a more strategic and participatory digital communication approach. Strategic recommendations are provided through increasing the Call-to-Action (CTA) elements in every video uploaded, involving students and alumni to expand the audience reach, cross-media social integration, and organizing internal training related to digital content management. Further research should focus on measuring whether increased visibility through social media contributes to an increase in archival literacy, the utilization of archival services, or public participation in institutional activities. Keywords: YouTube; content analysis; audience engagement; and visibility

Abstract

Background: Digital library applications have expanded access to reading materials, making user experience an important dimension of service evaluation. iPusnas, developed by the National Library of Indonesia, has attracted substantial user engagement, reflected in the large number of reviews on the Google Play Store. These reviews provide valuable insights into public perception yet require systematic analysis to inform service improvement. Objective: This study aims to examine user sentiment and emotional tendencies toward the iPusnas application based on Google Play Store reviews, with the goal of identifying key aspects of user experience that require attention. Methods: This study applies a sentiment analysis approach to 500 user reviews collected through data scraping between 2024 and May 2025. The analysis involves text preprocessing, sentiment classification, and emotion detection using the SentiArt lexicon-based method, which enables the identification of affective dimensions in textual data. Model performance is evaluated using precision and recall metrics, and results are further explored through word frequency and topic patterns. Results: The findings show that positive sentiment is primarily associated with expressions of satisfaction and enjoyment, while negative sentiment reflects frustration related to technical issues and service limitations. The classification model demonstrates relatively high precision for both positive (84.4%) and negative (94.7%) categories, but lower recall, indicating limitations in capturing diverse expressions of sentiment in Indonesian-language reviews. Thematic patterns highlight recurring concerns such as application stability, access to collections, and user interface experience. Conclusion: User reviews of iPusnas reveal a combination of positive engagement and persistent technical concerns. The results suggest that sentiment analysis can support service evaluation but also highlight methodological challenges in accurately capturing nuanced expressions in Indonesian. Strengthening system performance and responsiveness to user feedback remains essential to enhancing the role of iPusnas in supporting digital literacy

Abstract

Background: Despite the growing emphasis on digital transformation in higher education, many university libraries in Indonesia still rely on manual and fragmented management systems. This gap hinders the development of data-driven planning and evaluation, resulting in service inefficiencies and poorly aligned decision-making. Previous studies have focused mainly on digital collection development and service theory, with limited attention to the strategic integration of Management Information Systems (MIS) for continuous quality improvement. Moreover, empirical research examining how MIS supports library performance and user-centered innovation in real institutional settings remains scarce. This study addresses that gap by exploring MIS implementation as a foundation for evidence-based library management. Objective: This study aims to analyze the role of the Management Information System (MIS) in supporting planning and evaluation processes in library management. It also seeks to identify practical and effective strategies to improve service quality through data-driven MIS optimization in higher education libraries. Methods: Using a qualitative method with a case study approach, the research was conducted over a three-month period. Data focused on MIS functions and strategic implementation, collected from the head librarian, library staff, system administrators, and users (students and lecturers) through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. Data validity was ensured through triangulation and member checks, and analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. Results: Findings show that MIS enhances planning accuracy, automates reporting, and provides real-time access to user data, enabling better performance evaluation and decision-making. Strategies such as staff training, data- based standard operating procedures (SOPs), digital service transformation, and analytical dashboards contributed to improved responsiveness and accountability in library services. Conclusion: The study concludes that MIS plays a strategic role in transforming library management into a more adaptive, efficient, and data-driven system. When effectively implemented, MIS strengthens institutional decision- making, aligns services with user needs, and establishes a culture of continuous quality improvement in university libraries.

Abstract

Background: Libraries and books are not merely physical repositories of information but cultural constructs that reflect how societies perceive, organize, and transmit knowledge. Literary works such as The Magic Library: Bibbi Bokken’s Magic Library offer a meaningful lens through which these cultural meanings can be examined, particularly in understanding libraries as symbolic spaces of knowledge and literacy. Objective: This study aimed to analyze how meanings related to books, libraries, and knowledge are constructed through systems of signs in a literary text using Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework of denotation, connotation, and myth. Methods: This study uses qualitative interpretative approach using Roland Barthes’ textual semiotic analysis method. The research demonstrates that the novel produces a myth in which knowledge gains meaning only through organization and accessibility. Results: The study found The Magic Library: Bibbi Bokken’s Magic Library constructs meaning through librarianship-related symbols that represent knowledge, information order, and cultural continuity. Using Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, the analysis shows that the library is portrayed not merely as a physical repository of books, but as a living epistemological space that emphasizes the importance of information organization, accessibility, and the sustained development of human knowledge within cultural and ideological contexts. Conclusion: These results indicate that The Magic Library: Bibbi Bokken’s Magic Library portrays the library as more than a fantasy setting, presenting it as a symbol of knowledge, memory, and civilization. Through Barthes’ semiotic framework, the novel emphasizes the importance of systematic information management and the enduring role of libraries as living spaces that connect past, present, and future knowledge

Abstract

Background: Archives are important records that serve as historical “memories”. There are dynamic archives (actively used) and static archives (historically valuable, permanently stored, and need to be protected). Although static archives are open to the public, access is restricted to protect information, state interests, privacy, and due to limited facilities. This research will look at how the Semarang Regency Archives and Library Office manages and provides access to these static archives. Objective: This research aims to understand the access services for static archives at the Semarang Regency Archives and Library Agency. This includes identifying the criteria for access restrictions as well as analyzing the impact of such restrictions on the static archive collection there. Methods: This research uses qualitative methods, which means the data is in the form of descriptions of words or observations of behavior, not numbers. This method explores phenomena in their natural environment, where the researcher becomes the main data collection tool. Data is collected with various techniques (triangulation) and analyzed inductively to understand the deep meaning, not just conclude in general. Results: Access to static archives at Semarang Regency Archives and Libraries Agency is restricted by Semarang Regent Regulation No. 27/2018 to uphold information confidentiality for law enforcement and state security. The access is categorized as open or closed, with direct access to the depot or indirect access through ANRI's online portal for archive listings and digital copies. Archives are obtained from institutions through submissions and acquisitions with specific procedures, though most have been received from regional institutions irregularly. The agency aims to remind these institutions to submit archives more consistently. Conclusion: The research highlights that despite the mandate for integrated archive services by Regent Regulation No. 27/2018, Semarang Regency Archives and Library relies on a manual static archive system due to infrastructure limitations and lack of technologists. Access to archives is restricted to protect sensitive information, but efforts are in place for relevant collection evaluation and proper storage maintenance. Archives are classified based on local regulations, with efforts to align the classification system. The acquisition of archives predominantly involves local institutions but proactive strategies are needed to diversify sources. Overall, the research emphasizes the challenges faced by the Semarang Regency Archives and Library in transitioning to an integrated system, indicating the need for technological advancements and diversified acquisition sources.
