Abstract

Background: The preservation of cultural heritage manuscripts has long been guided by conservation techniques developed for European paper. However, Daluang paper behaves differently from Western paper, raising concerns about the suitability of directly applying European methods to its care. Purpose: This study aimed to compare the physical preservation between Daluang manuscripts and European paper manuscripts, for which different methods were used to preserve cultural heritage. Methods: A total of 38 peer-reviewed articles were analyzed using a systematic literature review (SLR) from the Scopus database between 2015 – 2025. Results: The findings provided evidence on the susceptibility of Daluang manuscripts to fungi and moisture-induced degradation, particularly in tropical countries. In European paper manuscripts, changes in acidity often lead to corrosion. Protection methods for Daluang manuscripts focus on environmental adjustments of and preventative measures, whereas European paper requires chemical treatments, such as acid reduction or phytate-based ink protection. Conclusions: This study concludes that multilateralism is needed for manuscript preservation, with underpinning principles grounded in conservation science, cultural heritage, and the analytical investigation of materials. More localized research and conservation are urgently needed for endangered collections such as the Daluang manuscripts. Implications: These findings imply that conservation implementation must be adapted to the material characteristics, historical trajectories, and environmental contexts of each manuscript, as demonstrated by European and Daluang traditions. In practice, this implies the urgency of developing localized, preventive conservation strategies integrated with digitization to support sustainable preservation and broader access.

Abstract

Background: Historical newspapers serve as crucial primary sources, preserving a Indonesian nation's collective memory. However, their fragile material composition presents persistent preservation challenges for memory institutions, creating a need to assess the gap between collection conditions and existing safeguards. Purpose: This study aimed to systematically map the extent of physical deterioration in historical newspaper collections and assess the effectiveness of preservation measures implemented by the National Library of Indonesia (Perpusnas RI). Methods: The research used a quantitative descriptive design combined with the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). A proportional sample of 400 bundles was drawn from a total of 25,814 bundles, representing four major historical periods of Indonesia. Results: Findings indicated that a majority of the collections exhibited moderate to severe damage, including high acidity (95%), foxing (90%), and fungal stains (65%). Crucially, only 5.25% of bundles had undergone physical conservation and 36.25% had been digitized, identifying torn paper and missing sections as the most critical categories requiring immediate intervention. Conclusion: The study concludes that systematic digitization serves as a sustainable preservation surrogate. There is an urgent need to address the significant preservation gap to ensure the long-term survival of Indonesia's documentary heritage. Implications: The findings imply a necessity for strengthening institutional policies, technical protocols, and human resource capacity. Theoretically, it establishes an evidence-based framework for newspaper preservation, while practically, it advocates for prioritizing AHP-based decision-making in conservation resource allocation.

Abstract

Background: Libraries play a vital role in disseminating knowledge and providing access to information. However, the declining interest of Generation C in traditional library visits highlights a pressing need for adaptive strategies aligned with their digital habits. While many studies focus on general digitalization efforts, limited research addresses how local public libraries respond to Generation C’s preferences in practice. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze strategic initiatives implemented by the Makassar City Library to enhance Generation C’s engagement and visitation rates. Methods: A qualitative case study approach was employed, with data collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and direct observations. Participants included librarians and active Generation C users, selected through purposive sampling to capture relevant and experience-based perspectives. Results: Findings revealed that Generation C values libraries with advanced digital and physical features, such as high-speed Wi-Fi, public-use computers and tablets, interactive and collaborative learning spaces, cafés, and access to digital collections. In response, the South Sulawesi Provincial Library and Archives Service has launched strategies including interactive social media outreach, the development of educational websites, and mobile digital library services through platforms such as Elfan and iSulsel. Redesigned physical spaces that encourage creativity and collaboration also proved attractive to younger users. Conclusion: These strategies demonstrate how libraries can remain relevant by embracing technology, user convenience, and participatory service design. They contribute to increasing Generation C's library visitation and engagement. Implications: Practically, the study highlights the importance of integrating digital infrastructure and spatial innovation to meet modern user expectations. Theoretically, it underscores how localized, user-centered strategies contribute to library relevance in the digital age, offering a model for other public libraries facing similar generational engagement challenges.

Abstract

Background: Few reading communities have developed systematic literacy tourism models centering local narratives. Purpose: This study designs and validates a culturally embedded literacy tourism model at Pabukon Ngadongeng Reading Community, Sumedang. Methods: Using design thinking methodology (empathize, definition, ideation, prototyping, testing), data were collected through ethnographic observations, interviews, and focus group discussions. The prototype featured a 90-minute narrative route incorporating Sundanese storytelling (Nini Anteh), traditional games (paciwitciwit lutung, oray-orayan), and reflective discussions. Results: Results demonstrate measurable multi-dimensional impacts. Educationally, children exhibited significantly enhanced narrative comprehension when stories were delivered orally versus textually, with sustained active participation throughout sessions. The integration of folklore with traditional games created embodied learning experiences that improved reading retention and contextual understanding. Socially, the model fostered intergenerational dialogue among local storytellers, volunteers, children, and parents, strengthening community cohesion. Post-implementation, multiple schools independently contacted the reading community requesting program replication, indicating strong social demand and perceived value. Culturally, participants demonstrated deepened emotional connections to Sundanese heritage, with Nini Anteh eliciting particularly strong responses regarding loyalty and familial bonds. Children expressed heightened pride in regional identity and increased engagement with local cultural narratives. Digital documentation through Instagram and integration with the Sumedang Reading Community Forum website extended program reach beyond physical sessions, creating accessible archives for broader literacy networks. Conclusion: The study concludes that participatory, culturally oriented literacy programs transform local knowledge into transferable educational frameworks. Limitations include single-location implementation and analog process constraints. Implications: Theoretically, this demonstrates that modularity frameworks can resolve authenticity-scalability tensions in cultural tourism. Practically, the model provides a replicable blueprint for reading communities, with policy implications for Perpustakaan Nasional Republik Indonesia literacy strategies and UNESCO Memory of the World heritage preservation. Future research should explore multi-site validation and hybrid analog-digital models.

Abstract

Background: As future leaders of the nation, the young generation's task is to comprehend the complexity of the various issues that arise in society, including those related to politics. On the other hand, their innate status as digital natives also affect the way they process information. The unstoppable dynamics of information in the online world create a variety of experiences for them. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the information experience of young social media users throughout the 2024 political year in Indonesia. Methods: The research method used was qualitative. Data were obtained from observation activities and interviews with seven informants. The informants were selected based on several criteria to ensure their experiences were relevant to this study. The collected research data were analyzed thematically, resulting in four themes: lifestyle, information packaging, social media assessment, and information sharing. Results: Study results showed that lifestyle was related to gadget usage, daily political information access, and K-pop. Information packaging included short duration, audio-visual content, independence, humor, and textual aspects. Social media assessment highlights Twitter as a platform capable of training and enhancing intellectuality. Information sharing forms sub-themes such as education, self-expression, reciprocity, and hoaxes. Conclusion: This study concludes that the political information experience of the younger generation today is closely integrated with their lifestyle, information packaging, social media assesment, and information sharing activity. Implications: These results suggest that the information disseminators recommended creating content to increase audience engagement. Social media platforms can be used to cultivate digital literacy and facilitate discussions. However, these findings also emphasize the urgency of strengthening information filters to mitigate the negative impact of information-sharing patterns that risk spreading hoaxes.

Abstract

Background: Libraries in Islamic schools globally are increasingly recognized as dynamic learning environments. However, bibliometric evidence on their role in supporting early childhood Islamic education remains limited. Purpose: This study examines the role of libraries in advancing early childhood Islamic education, emphasizing their potential as dynamic centers of literacy, pedagogy, and moral formation. Methods: This study used Scopus-indexed metadata from 2008 to 2025 as samples. At least 217 documents were analyzed using bibliometric methods (VOSviewer and RStudio), and 64 papers were qualitatively reviewed. Results: The results showed that highly cited works emerged from diverse regions, reflecting a global perspective on Islamic pedagogy. Moreover, thematic trends highlighted teacher education, emotional intelligence, and parental involvement. The result also showed that early childhood was a critical stage for instilling Islamic values such as honesty (ṣidq), compassion (raḥmah), tolerance (tasāmuḥ), and discipline (inḍibāṭ). However, educators often faced challenges, including limited pedagogical innovation, inadequate school training, and restricted access to quality resources. To address these gaps, libraries could provide curated materials, facilitate professional development for teachers, and integrate interactive and technology-driven learning strategies. Conclusion: Libraries are not merely repositories but strategic facilitators of holistic child development by leveraging digital innovations such as AI to strengthen children’s literacy. Implication: The findings of this study imply that libraries can enhance community-based Islamic early-childhood education by providing curated resources and interactive programs for parents and teachers to foster children’s literacy and moral development.

Abstract

Background: This study examined the role of knowledge sharing in strengthening resilience and solidarity among rural women’s groups in Cianjur Regency, Indonesia. Rural women, particularly female heads of households, face limited access to education, economic opportunities, and social recognition, challenges further exacerbated by cultural norms and ecological pressures following the 2022 earthquake. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze how knowledge sharing enhances resilience and to explore its impact on solidarity between academics and rural women. Methods: A qualitative case study was conducted with six purposively selected informants, including female heads of households, local women leaders, and academic facilitators. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, documentation, and focus group discussions conducted over four months. Conclusion: Knowledge sharing is realized through participatory mechanisms such as peer-to-peer discussions, storytelling sessions, skills and entrepreneurship training, mentoring interactions with academics, focus group discussions, and continuous informal digital communication via WhatsApp groups. Findings indicate that knowledge sharing contributes to restoring self-confidence, encouraging engagement in productive activities, and strengthening mutual support mechanisms in coping with psychological stress and everyday challenges. Moreover, knowledge sharing fosters open communication, builds collective capacity, and expands access to information through collaboration with academics, thereby enhancing social solidarity. Implications: This study affirms that knowledge sharing integrates local practices with academic insights, strengthens economic independence through skills development and entrepreneurship, and builds networks that sustain community empowerment and resilience. Limitations include the small sample size and focus on a single site, suggesting the need for future multi-site, digitally oriented research.
