Abstract

The purpose of conducting this research is to examine the difference NGain scores between students who learn vocabulary with Blindfold Game and students who learn vocabulary without Blindfold Game at the first year students of SMP Negeri 13 Kendari. The samples of this research are the first grade four (VII-4) and the first grade three (VII-3) which consists of 27 students for each class. This research is conducted in comparison research design that consists of experimental class (VII-4) and controll class (VII-3). The data of this research are collected by giving pre-test and post-test in two classes (VII-4 & VII-3). The result shows that there is an improvement of the students’ vocabulary achievement. Independent samples t-test shows that, there is a significant difference in the Ngain scores for experimental class ( M = 60.08,  SD = 9.36 ) and controll class ( M = 20.41, SD = 14.56 ), t (52) = 11.904, p (0.000) < 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the value of Sig (2 tailed) is lower than the significance α value (0.000 < 0.05). In other words, alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. It means that the Blindfold game can enrich students’ vocabulary achievement for Junior High School Student.

Abstract

Most  of  the  students  felt  difficult  in  learning  a  language because they had little vocabulary. It was caused by the students were easy forgetting new words they had learned. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate whether there was any significant effect of using Mnemonic strategies on students’ vocabulary achievements at the seventh grade students of SMPN 2 Raha. This research used quasi experimental design and the population was all seventh grade students of SMPN 2 Raha in academic year 2017/2018. The samples of this study were class VII11 as the experimental group and VII10 as the control group. The research instrument was using 40 questions of vocabulary test. To collect the data, the researcher gave pre-test, taught by Mnemonic strategies, and gave post-test.  There were four techniques that applied in the learning process were rhyme, keyword, visualization, and narrative chain. The result showed students’ mean score in experimental group was 53.54 and 74.71 at post-test, while mean score in control group was 57.27 and 68.75 in post-test. Based on the calculation of T-test, score of tcount  = 5.828 was higher than ttable   =  2.00  and  the  pvalue   =  0.000  was  lower  than = 0.05. Therefore, could be concluded that there was a significant effect of using mnemonic strategies on students’ vocabulary achievement at the seventh grade students of SMPN 2 Raha.

Ninety-seven students participated in the present study.    The instruments   of   the   study   were   reading   comprehension   test   and questionnaires. Reading comprehension test was administered on two different occasions; before and after treatment, whereas questionnaires were administered prior to the end of the study. Paired sample t-test was employed to examine possible differences in students’ pre- and post- test  scores. The  results  show  significant  improvement  in  students’  post-test  scores. Implications of the study will be critically discussed in this paper. Key words: Reciprocal Teaching Method, Critical Thinking, RTT+, Reading Comprehension.

Abstract

This study is an attempt to contribute in the study of translation shift. The goal is to  find  out  and  describe  the  structure  shift  that  occurs in  Indonesian-English translation.  This  study also  analized  the  accuracy of  translations  that  contain structure shifts. The analysis was specifically directed to the thesis abstracts and their English translation version that taken from the library of Teacher Training and Education Faculty,  Halu Oleo University. This study employed qualitative design. The total abstracts involved as source of data in this study were 2 abstracts that  came  from  one  study  program,  that  is,  Early-childhood  Education.  The analysis of the structure shift was based on the theory of Catford (1965). The result revealed that the structure shifts do exist in the translation of the thesis abstracts.   Specifically,   there   are   10   structure   shifts   found   in   this   study. Furthermore from these data, 4 of them are considered inaccurate translation; 5 are considered accurate translation; and only 1 is considered very accurate translation. This study concluded that the translator‟s comprehension about the target  language  system  is  highly  required  in  order  to  produce  an  accurate translation. This study also suggests that the translation shifts shoud be included as one topic to be discussed in translation class. Keywords: Structure shift, Accuracy, Thesis Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to find out whether there is a significant effectof chain drill technique on the first year of SMP Negeri 3 Raha. Theresearch question formulated “is there any significant effect ofchain drill technique on students’ speaking achievement at SMPNegeri 3 Raha?”. The design of study was pre-experimentalresearch design that consisted of one group pre-test and post-test.The population of this study was all students on the first year ofSMP Negeri 3 Raha who were registered in academic year2017/2018. The sample of this study was one class namely VII3which consisted of 22 students. The instrument of this study wasoral test in dialogue based on the cue card about how to greet andrespond. The research used Paired Sample T- test to analyze theresult of the study of the effect of chain drill technique on students’speaking achievement after analyzing the normality of the data inthe experimental class. The result shows that students’ speakingability in the post test is 2.806 higher than 1.647 is the post test. The hypothesis testing is found that the level of significant is 0.00,since the level of significance value is less than 0.05, i.e.0.00<0.05, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and H1 is accepted. It means that the use of chain drill technique shows a significantdifference on students’ speaking achievement on the first year ofSMP Negeri 3 Raha based on the result of the post-test.Keywords: Speaking, Teaching Speaking, Chain Drill Technique
