The study aims at investigating the correlation between students’ emotional intelligence and their academic achievement at the eleventh grade of SMA N 1 Lawa. The objective of the study was to answer the following research questions: what is the correlation between students’ emotional intelligence and their academic achievement in English language at SMAN 1 Lawa?. The study was correlation research study, which employed quantitative research methods. The data were collected from 135 participants who are from SMA N 1 Lawa class XI IPA and IPS. The data collection was carried out by using an emotional intelligence questionnaire and English achievement students from report card. Researcher used simple random sampling technique in taking the sample. The data of the study was analyzed through Spearman correlation analysis of SPSS 16. The result showed that the coefficient correlation that obtained from the computation was 0.352 and categorized as moderate correlation. The result showed that there was a positive correlation between students’ emotional intelligence and their academic achievement in English language. The conclusion of this study was drawn through the result of computation which showed that the value of coefficient of correlation (r) between two variables, that was emotional intelligence as the variable X and academic achievement as the variable Y, was as moderate as that of the Spearman correlation table with 0.05 level significant. Further, the data showed that there was a moderate correlation. Therefore, it showed that the alternative hypothesis is accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected.

This thesis is about the analysis of speech acts found in the talk show “Hitam Putih†on Trans 7 (Episode 18th December 2017). The research question of this thesis were (1) What kinds of the illocutionary acts used in host and main guest stars utterance in “Hitam Putih†talk show? And (2) How perlocutionary acts implied in host and main guest stars utterance in “Hitam Putih†talk show?. The objectives of this research were to identifying and analyze the types of the illocutionary acts and the perlocutionary acts implied in host and main guest stars utterance in “Hitam Putih†talk show.This research used a qualitative method to describe and analyze the utterances. The technique of data collection were (1) Download the video of talk show Hitam Putih from YouTube. (2) Transcribe the conversation by listen to the video in several times. (3) Reads and observes dialog from the script. (4) Classified the types of illocutionary acts which finding in conversation. The technique of data analysis were (1) The researcher identified the illocutionary act and perlocutionary act from the host and main guest stars utterance in Hitam Putih talk show. (2) Described and analized the utterances which include illocutionary and perlocutionary acts by using pragmatic approach. (3) Concluding the data analysis.The result of this thesis show that assertive illocutionary acts is the dominant types of speech act. There are 29 assertive of illocutionary acts, 14 directive of illocutionary acts, 15 expressive of illocutionary acts, 1 commissive of illocutionary acts. Perlocutionary acts which occurs between the speakers and the listener in the form of give statements, give questions, body language, expressions and following the speaker’s directions.

This research is aimed at investigating whether or not there was a significant effect of Peer Feedback through Facebook Group on students’ writing competence at MAN 1 Konawe Selatan in writing recount text. The design of this research was pre-experimental design which involved only one class (class X MIA 1) as sample of this research. The total sample was 24 students which selected by using purposive sampling technique. The instrument of this research was a written test which focused on three aspects of writing namely organization, language use and mechanics. The researcher collected the data by giving pre-test and post-test in order to know students’ writing competence before and after treatment of Peer Feedback through Facebook Group had been applying. The researcher used the paired sample t-test in SPSS 16 Windows Software to analyze the result of this research. The finding shows that there is a significant effect of Peer Feedback through Facebook Group on students’ writing competence. It is proven by the result of descriptive analysis where the mean score of pre-test was 51.66 and mean score of post-test was 67.29. Furthermore, the result of hypothesis testing showed that the value of Sig (2-tailed) was 0.000 which smaller than alpha value 0.05, means that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Peer Feedback through Facebook Group on upgrading students’ writing competence in recount text at MAN 1 Konawe Selatan. Hence, teaching and learning writing use Peer Feedback through Facebook Group can be one of effective methods on upgrading students’ writing competence.

This study investigated the types and the functions of conversational implicature were used in Ice Age 3 movie. The objectives of this study have identified the types and described the functions of conversational implicature were used in "Ice Age 3 Movie''. The technique of data analysis was the researcher identified the utterances which are containing conversational implicature in ice age 3 movie based on the theory of implicature which purposed by Yule and classified the utterances based on the types of conversational implicature, namely particular implicature, scalar implicature, and generalized implicature. The researcher described the function implicature are used in ice age 3 movie based on the theory of speech act classification which is proposed by Searle. The result of this study showed that there are three types of conversational implicature found on Ice Age 3 movie based on implicature theory by Yule and the researcher also found there are four functions of conversational implicature were used in Ice Age 3 movie based on a theory of speech act by Searle.

The aim of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of guided question technique on students’ writing achievement. This research used pre-experimental design with one group pre – test and post – test design. This study involved all students in class X MIA1 of SMAN 1 Bombana. The total sample was 29 students taken by using simple random sampling. The data of this research were collected by giving pre-test and post-test to the students in the form of written test. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 version by using descriptive analysis and inferential statistics. Result of data analysis indicated that guided question technique had positive significant effect on students’ writing achievement and could develop students’ skill in writing recount paragraph. It was based on result of descriptive analysis in which students’ pre test average score (mean) was 52,81, while mean of the post test score was 76,69. Moreover, result of probability value was .000 which was less than level of significant (05). It means that guided question technique is effective to develop the students’ achievement in writing.

The use of videos in education makes it possible to overcome practical real-world constraints and explore far greater possibilities provided by digital spaces, especially for the video uploaded in online platform such as blog. This study examines whether online video blog as media have a significant effect on students’ achievement of passive voice. It used pre-experimental (one group pre-test and post-test) design. The samples of this study were 10 students at 4J Operation. A pre-test and post-test were conducted by using multiple choice questions as the instruments. Data analysis was through paired-sample t-test. Results showed that there was an increase in mean score of pre-test (49,1) and post-test (63,5). Data from Paired Sample t-test showed that Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 which was smaller than .05 which means that there was significance difference in mean score after employing treatment.

The objective of this study this research is to describe the forms of the address term of Bugis language In Komba-Komba Village Kabangka District Muna Regency. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative analysis by using some techniques of collecting data such as: 1) Observation, 2) Elicitation, 3) Recording and 4) Noting. After the data being collected, the researcher analyze the following steps: 1) Transcript the data, 2) Making classification of gather data relating to greeting term, 3) Making description for last generalization objectively based on the script of data found in the field of the research. Data analysis in this research was analyzed by a functional grammar approach (Halliday, 1985) namely Field, Tenor, and Mode. The scope of this research is limited by the use of address term of Bugis language which is used in the circle of the family according to society that occurred in the formal and informal situation. The result of this research showed the address terms of Bugis language has three forms of the address term namely: 1) Address terms in Family 2) Address terms in Community 3) Address terms based on position (noble).

Many teachers understand that the use of nonverbal communication in teaching process is a good way to support the students’ understanding. By this effort, students may reach good comprehension through their belief for every act of teaching and learning process. This belief can be scripted to picture their perception. The students’ perception is all the students’ mental images and feeling which happen during their activities in the school. This means that any activities where the students gain information, the perception exist there. In this thesis, the students’ perception determines the function of the teacher’s nonverbal communication. The aim of this research was to investigate the students’ perception on the teacher’s nonverbal communication in teaching English at SMAN 14 Bombana. The research used a qualitative design with the subject of the study was class X and XI IPA. The total numbers of these two classes were 47. The researcher used classroom observation sheet and semi-structure interview as the instrument of the research, the interview which was the questions were formulated but, in the field, the interviewer might modify the format or questions during the interview process. This process took place to both of the students and the teacher. After collecting data, the data was analyzed descriptively. The result showed that the students agreed that the use of nonverbal communication in the teaching and learning process works. All of the expected meaning behind the nonverbal communication could be understood by the students well. The entire teacher’s  nonverbal  communication  where  the  researcher  focused  namely gestures, eye contact, and tone of voice functioned well. Most of the students agreed that the teacher’s nonverbal communication made them motivated to learn, focused their attention, and made them eagerly to speak, and sometimes, it made the students proud

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of using Scientifics Approach on Students’ vocabulary achievement at grade eight of SMP Muhammadiyah Kendari. The research question of this study was “Is there any significant effect in using of Scientific Approach to increase the students’ vocabulary achievement at grade eight of SMP Muhammadiyah Kendari?†The objective of the study was to find out data and information whether there is a significant effect in using of Scientific Approach to increase the students’ vocabulary achievement at grade eight of SMP Muhammadiyah Kendari. The design of study was a pre-experimental design. The sample of this study was taken by using random sampling which consisted of 30 students. The instrument of this study was vocabulary test which consisted 40 items. The result of the study showed that there was a significant effect in teaching vocabulary through the use of Scientific Approach at grade eight of SMP Muhammadiyah Kendari. The average of students’ vocabulary achievement before using Scientific Approach was 4.99 which is in low category. Meanwhile, the students’ vocabulary achievement after using Scientific Approach was 7.59 which is in high category. The result of hypothesis testing proves that t-test = 25.36 was higher than t-table = 2.04. This finding shows that in teaching vocabulary by using Scientific Approach improve students’ vocabulary achievement at grade eight of SMP Muhammadiyah Kendari.

This study is conducted to investigate whether there was a significant effect of English comics on students‟ vocabulary achievement. The research question of this study was “is there any significant effect of English comics on students‟ vocabulary achievement at SMPN 10 Kendari?†The design of this study was quasi experimental design that consists of experimental class and control class. The sample of this study are students at class VIII 3 and VIII 4 in SMP Negeri 10 Kendari who register in academic year 2016/2017 with the total number of sample are 56 students, 27 for control class and 29 for experimental class. The instrument of this study is a vocabulary test. The researcher collects the data by giving pre test in two classes to know students ability, giving treatment which  the researcher conducted teaching and learning process by using English comics in experimental class and using no media (conventional teaching method) in control class, giving post test to know students‟ vocabulary achievement after being taught by using comics compared with the result in class that taught by conventional teaching media. The researcher used an Independent sample T-test in SPSS verse 20 to analyze the result of the research. An independent sample t-test was conducted to compare the gain scores in experimental and control class. There was a significant difference in the scores for experimental class (M= 2.02, SD= 2.03) and control class (M= 0.94, SD= 1.32) conditions; p= 0.02 Sig. <α or H0  is rejected and H1  is accepted. Thus, it  can be said that  using English comics  has  increased the  students‟  vocabulary achievement. The effect of English comics can increase students‟ vocabulary achievement at second year students‟ of SMPN 10 Kendari. Keywords : English comics, Vocabulary Achievement, Media in Learning
