Abstract

This study aims to identify the role of Muhammadiyah's higher-educational institutions in fostering religious tolerance in West Papua. Applying the qualitative method, this research is conducted in three Muhammadiyah higher-educational institutions in West Papua i.e., Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong (UM Sorong) Sorong City, Universitas Pendidikan Muhammadiyah Sorong (UNIMUDA) Sorong Regency, and Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (STKIP) Muhammadiyah Manokwari. The results showed that Muhammadiyah’s higher-educational institutions are inclusive in terms of spiritual understanding. In fostering religious tolerance there are three approaches taken by the three Muhammadiyah higher-educational institutions in West Papua: 1) social approach, 2) cultural approach, and 3) excellent service approaches. The strategies implemented the role includes: 1) disseminating Muhammadiyah’s vision and mission, 2) inculcating tolerance values since the beginning of students joining Muhammadiyah higher-educational institutions, 3) strengthening tolerance value by lecturing processes, conducting, sharing sessions both formally and informally, and 4) empowering student activity units and other facilities that support multicultural student interaction processes.

This article discusses the position of religion in politics that has relation to leadership. The main argumentation of this research is religion will constantly become a political power and social movement. In one side the research has a different opinion from the integration politic paradigm and secular that proposed by Hasan al-Bannā and ‘Alī Abd. al-Rāziq, but in other side, it has reinforced the two paradigms. By using literature study and descriptive method and philosophical historical approach, it indicates Islam will constantly exist and has influence in the political process. Although Islam is not depending on politics and on the contrary. Islam and politic are both integrated dimensions of life, so both are not able to be separated from social political dynamics.

Abstract

This study focussed on many radical Islamic movements in Solo as the objects of research, especially the Islamic movements oftenly called as Tim Hisbah. Applying the approach of political sociology, this research will capture that phenomenons of religious radicalism are not merely problem of religious ideology, but also socio-political problem. Frammed by the social theories such as the theory of identity and social movements, included political opportunity structure, framing process, and the mobilizing structure this study showed that radicalism is an effort to establish identity by utilizing mass network (Muslim), mobilization, framing process, and advantaging political opportunities (democratic nature). In addition to relate to religious de-radicalization in Indonesia, this research argued that Islamic radicalism is not only a religious phenomenon that must be solved solely by de-radicalization of Islamic thought and ideology, but also a phenomenon that can be discussed by other sciences such as social, political and economic sciences.

Abstract

While Indonesia claims to be the world’s third largest democracy, it recognizes itself as both a secular and religious state. The negotiation of the state-religion relationship influenced by Islamic discourse continues to shape the socio-political development of this largest Muslim nation. This paper describes how Indonesia’s discursive contention is molded by the power and popularity of Islamic discourses. It will present examples and analysis of appeal to fear as coercive discourses from recently published speech events, debates, edicts, regulations, and publications as well as examine the vital role of Islamic discourses in the Indonesian public sphere and democracy. This paper concludes that coercive religious discourses and some government policies not only marginalize the voices of minority and opposing groups, but also curtail participative critical debates that are necessary for a democratic Indonesia.
