Abstract

The Tunas Harapan farming community, located in North Balikpapan, Balikpapan, Indonesia, has been engaged in agriculture for decades. Current fertilizer subsidy regulations have limited access to synthetic fertilizers, which were previously essential for agricultural activities. This community service initiative aimed to address the dual issues of agricultural waste management and organic farming benefits by introducing methods for producing and applying liquid organic fertilizer. The program was conducted from February 24 to May 23, 2024. It required extensive collaboration with the farming community to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the production process and use of the organic fertilizer. The production of liquid fertilizer was successful. Measurement of the crop growth rate during the pilot crop planting project demonstrated the suitability of the organic fertilizer, which reduced the crop cycle duration by an average of 23.3% compared with non-fertilized crops. A questionnaire survey revealed that the Tunas Harapan community was satisfied with the usefulness of the program, with 65% of respondents strongly agreeing and 35% agreeing.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major public health problem in Indonesia despite a decline in national prevalence. Improving knowledge of stunting prevention among women before and during the reproductive period is an important strategy for reducing the risk of stunting. Educational interventions targeting different community groups may help strengthen community awareness and preventive behaviors. This community service program aimed to compare gains in knowledge of stunting prevention among mothers of toddlers with stunting and brides-to-be following a structured educational intervention conducted in two communities with different characteristics. A pretest and posttest educational intervention was conducted at Porong Primary Health Center, Sidoarjo Regency, involving 20 mothers of toddlers with stunting, and in Notorejo Village, Gondang District, Tulungagung Regency, involving 12 brides-to-be. Total population sampling was used. The intervention consisted of interactive lectures, group discussions, question-and-answer sessions, demonstrations, and hands-on practical training on stunting prevention and child growth prediction. Knowledge was assessed using a validated questionnaire covering five domains: the definition of stunting, causes and risk factors, prevention strategies, stunting management, and child growth prediction. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, paired t tests, and independent-samples t tests, with a significance level of p < 0.05. Knowledge scores increased in both groups after the educational intervention. The mean total score increased from 16.30 to 20.60 among mothers of toddlers with stunting and from 17.83 to 22.50 among brides-to-be. Paired t tests showed significant improvements in knowledge in both Porong (p < 0.001) and Notorejo (p = 0.019). No significant difference was observed between the two groups at baseline (p = 0.839), whereas postintervention scores differed significantly (p = 0.011). However, this comparison should be interpreted cautiously because the groups represented different target populations. The structured educational intervention improved knowledge of stunting prevention among both mothers of toddlers with stunting and brides-to-be. Integrating stunting prevention education into maternal and child health services and premarital health education programs may strengthen early prevention efforts. Future community service programs should include larger and more comparable populations and evaluate the long-term sustainability of changes in knowledge and behavior.

Abstract

Sea grapes (Caulerpa spp.) are abundantly available in the coastal waters of Tual City; however, their utilization remains highly limited. This community service initiative aimed to empower coastal communities, particularly women-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and fisheries extension officers, through the transfer of a zero-waste processing technique for sea grape jam production. Grounded in community empowerment theory, the program used a participatory approach that consisted of preparation, hands-on training, and evaluation involving 24 participants. The evaluation results showed a substantial improvement in participants’ technical knowledge, with mean scores increasing from 32.3% in the pretest to 97.6% in the post-test, representing a 291.5% increase. Beyond technical skill acquisition, the intervention successfully reshaped participants’ perceptions and fostered strong entrepreneurial motivation to develop marine-based household enterprises. In conclusion, integrating local marine resource innovation with targeted capacity building not only strengthens coastal economic resilience but also provides a socioeconomically and environmentally sustainable model for regional microenterprise development.

Abstract

Anisakidosis is a parasitic zoonosis transmitted through the consumption of raw or undercooked fish. This condition represents an important epidemiological concern in Sangihe Islands Regency, where the prevalence of parasites in fish intended for consumption is 10.7% and the seroprevalence of human antibodies is 52.67%, potentially reflecting local dietary practices involving raw fish dishes such as Kinilo. In response, a participatory dissemination approach was implemented and successfully established collaborative commitment among local stakeholders, which was realized through a four-pillar strategic action plan. The dissemination activity involved 25 stakeholders and facilitated stakeholder engagement, technology transfer, and the formulation of preliminary follow-up commitments. This initiative also demonstrates the potential applicability of a participatory One Health governance approach in archipelagic regions facing challenges related to foodborne zoonotic diseases. The evaluation results indicate that this approach not only enhancesconceptual understanding of disease prevention but also establishes a One Health governance model applicable to archipelagic regions, in which the integration of human, animal, and environmental health contributes substantially to strengthening the resilience of local food systems.

Abstract

Child undernutrition remains a persistent community health concern, and local food assets can be used to strengthen the practical delivery of supplementary feeding programs. This paper aimed to formulate two child-friendly milk-based foods using locally available fresh milk and Curcuma xanthorrhiza, and to implement them through a cadre-led community program in Tempuran Village, Pasuruan. The program used an Asset Based Community Development approach to map the local dairy supply, co-design products with stakeholders, and conduct hands-on production training together with a balanced nutrition workshop. A one-group pretest and posttest design assessed learning outcomes among 20 cadres, whereas child outcomes were descriptively summarized from routine weight and height records for 16 indicated children monitored from August to November 2025 using official Posyandu (Integrated Health Post) classifications aligned with the WHO Child Growth Standards. Post-assessment results were higher than baseline scores across all cadre competency domains. Among the 16 monitored children, mean body weight increased from 9.9 kg at baseline to 10.8 kg in November. The proportion categorized as underweight decreased from 50.0% to 18.7%, whereas the proportion with low height-for-age decreased from 25.0% to 12.5% during the monitoring period. These findings indicate that standardized dairy-based supplementary foods combined with cadre capacity building and routine growth monitoring can be feasibly integrated into community services and may support measurable short-term improvements in child nutritional status. Future program development should focus on integrating standardized dairy-based supplementary food packages into routine Posyandu services and strengthening sustainable cadre-led implementation at the household level. However, these findings were based on short-term routine monitoring in a limited community sample.

Abstract

Field supervision in student community service learning is often examined in terms of supervisors’ field activities, whereas less attention has been given to how institutional documents define their pedagogical role. This study examines the 2023 institutional design of Kuliah Kerja Nyata-Pembelajaran Pemberdayaan Masyarakat (student community service learning) at Universitas Gadjah Mada using Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s concepts of pamong, asah, asih, and asuh as an interpretive framework. Six institutional documents covering learning outcomes, program implementation, assessment, individual and collective reporting, and field supervision were purposively selected. The documents were collected from July to August 2023 and analyzed from September 2023 to September 2024 through contextual reading, deductive coding, cross-document comparison, and philosophical interpretation. The documents define supervisory responsibilities most clearly in relation to academic guidance, program approval, monitoring, coordination, assessment, and the management of field problems. These responsibilities provide a documentary basis for interpreting field supervisors as potential pamong. Asah is most evident in learning outcomes, program design, assessment, and reporting, whereas asuh is reflected in monitoring, coordination, and supervisory intervention. Practices associated with asih, including attentive listening, relational care, ethical dialogue, and recognition of community voices, are less consistently specified. The findings suggest that the institutional design supports Dewantaran forms of supervision but articulates their dimensions unevenly. Greater attention to relational and reflective practices could strengthen the pedagogical orientation of field supervision.

Abstract

The Fisheries Study Program at Bangka Belitung State Manufacturing Polytechnic (Polman Babel) was developed to meet the fisheries industry’s need for competent human resources with expertise aligned with advances in aquaculture and fish processing. This community engagement initiative aimed to identify the competencies required of graduates, obtain input for curriculum development, and strengthen partnerships between higher education institutions and the business and industrial sectors. Data were collected through surveys and interviews with four partner companies, namely PT Cahaya Bintang Laut Abadi, PT Prayasa Mina Tirta, PT Sejahtera Mitra Jaya Mandiri, and PT Sumber Alam Segara. The results indicated that the industry required graduates with competencies in shrimp farming, water quality management, disease control, fishery product processing based on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), postharvest handling, and practical experience gained through industrial internships. These findings provided a basis for strengthening the Fisheries Study Program curriculum through relevant courses, including Water Quality Management, Fish Pests and Diseases, Aquaculture Techniques, Fishery Product Processing, Quality Standardization and Certification, Postharvest Handling Techniques, Fisheries Management, and Industrial Internships. The initiative produced recommendations for developing an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum that is more closely aligned with industry needs and is therefore expected to enhance graduate relevance and strengthen alignment between vocational education and industry.
