Abstract

The herbal drink in Indonesia has a fast development for its easy usage and minimum side effect. Some house plants have metabolite compounds with an important role as antiviral such as rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa), Curcuma domestica Val, Zingiber officinale, Cymbopogon citratus, and Pandanus amaryllifolius R. The purpose of our community empowerment activities was to introduce the benefits of house plants for supporting health, particularly as an antiviral during a pandemic. The method of community empowerment activities was carried out by explaining the example of home plants, their bioactive compound content, and their health benefits. The community was also taught to make simple and practical healthy drinks. The results showed that the community became more aware of the benefits of roselle and turmeric so that they did not doubt making a healthy drink to be consumed regularly during the pandemic. The results showed that about 85% of the community understood the benefits, and 90% were able to make herbal drinks. The conclusions of these community empowerment activities were going well. The community understood the benefits of house plants as an antiviral during a pandemic and succeeded in making simple healthy drinks from house plants.

Abstract

The prevalence of hypertension based on doctors’ diagnosis in D.I Yogyakarta Province ranks second highest at the national level as reported in the 2018 Basic Health Research. Hypertension prevention is an important pillar of public health, especially in at-risk populations. Hypertension continues to be a public health threat, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where patients with comorbid hypertension have a six times higher risk of dying if infected with COVID-19. During the COVID-19 pandemic, non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, are slightly neglected due to the focus on the COVID-19 pandemic. The offered solution is to conduct offline and online screening and education activities related to hypertension. This program aims to mobilize community empowerment to prevent a non-communicable disease, hypertension. Offline and online screening and education activities related to hypertension were carried out on 75 people in 3 RTs (RTs 3, 4, and 5), Prancak Glondong Hamlet, with on-the-job training for cadres. Based on the results of the program, 23% of the screening results showed normal blood pressure. In comparison, the other 48% were found with the ACC/AHA classified as type II hypertension during the examination, with the majority of the age range of 45-65 years (59%). Community development was carried out through job training with three cadres. This program can help reactivate the community empowerment. Health promotion carried out during this community service can increase awareness of non-communicable diseases, especially hypertension.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the habit of face-to-face offline learning to online learning using Information, Communication and Technology (ICT). This happens in all education units, including the Community Learning Centre (CLC). Community learning centre, as nonformal education unit, has flexible characteristics. Nevertheless, it still has the competitiveness to provide learning according to the needs of students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Community activities are voluntary-based, where technology uses are still partial and not optimal. For this reason, community service activities through the training aim to provide knowledge about how information, communication, and technology are used in data management and learning. This community service program approach was carried out qualitatively by conducting in-depth interviews with community samples in each district of Yogyakarta. The offline activity was attended by 20 participants from CLC in Yogyakarta City. With this direct training and workshop, community managers can practice using cloud storage for data management and use online conference and presentation applications to support the creation of learning media.

Abstract

Agriculture is claimed as Indonesia’s strategic pillar sector. The existence of a community-based enterprise with a traditional business model is often seen as a weakness, while social capital is a strength to thrive. However, a well-managed conventional business model can become one of the foundations of a sustainable livelihood. This community service program wass carried out with the Artha Mandiri Group, which is domiciled in Kemadang Village, Gunungkidul, Special Region of Yogyakarta. This program aimed to increase the economic resilience of group members by empowering and growing business capabilities with their social capital as their fundamental strength. The empowerment method used in this program was Participatory Action Learning and Action Research (PALAR), which is considered an effective tool for strategically transforming paradigms. This method focused on a balance between progressive, collaborative practice accompanied by an action research foundation. The 6-month program has resulted in collaborative business competency learning practice for group members, emphasizing different processing methods to produce business line diversification. This group made flour from land-owned rice paddy harvests with the same quality as commercially produced. This achievement can also have an impact on business cost efficiency.

Abstract

It is essential to manage waste in an integrated manner, beginning at the domestic and village levels. In fact, there are still a significant number of residents who throw trash carelessly. Jurangjero village, a village in Klaten Regency, Central Java, is an example of a village that does not adequately manage its waste. In addition, the village has agricultural waste issues that require optimal utilization, including rice straw. This community service program aims to increase public awareness of organic and inorganic domestic waste management and agricultural waste management so that they can be applied appropriately to the concept of the green village. The program’s methods included field observations, waste management outreach, and training. The training included the creation of organic fertilizers, eco-bricks, plastic waste containers, and straw paper. Farmer groups and farmer women’s groups have gained an understanding of the management of domestic organic waste into organic fertilizer and compost as a result of the outreach and training activities. Karangtaruna has also gained an understanding of inorganic waste management by applying the recycling concept, which entails transforming plastic refuse into plastic pots and ecobricks. They have also grasped the production of economically valuable art paper from rice stalks. The descriptive analysis revealed that the average pre-test and posttest scores were 55.58 and 76.67, respectively. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that this community service program has increased residents’ knowledge of managing domestic and agricultural waste to create valuable products. The support of the village administration is required for sustainable waste management and the continuation of empowerment initiatives.

Abstract

Former inmates who experience discrimination while seeking employment may be more likely to recidivism if they do not have or lack the necessary skills. This issue is also faced by former inmates from the Sleman Class IIB Penitentiary, Yogyakarta Special Region, so several coaching in self-reliance and skills, e.g., animal husbandry, were provided in "Kampung Asimilasi" for inmates. However, there are problems with the animal husbandry of laying hens due to the lack of knowledge about proper management practices among correctional officers as facilitators. To address this, the "Ayam Bahagia" program was developed to provide correctional officers and inmates with the knowledge and practical skills they need to effectively and properly manage the raising of laying hens. The program covered the preparation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation through a blended delivery: offline and online methods. Six correctional officers and eight inmates followed this program. A pre-test and post-test measured the increase in knowledge and practical skills. Data were analyzed using t-test. This program has resulted in a significant increase (P>0.005) in knowledge and skills related to animal husbandry. Correctional officers have been able to become facilitators for inmates with adequate ability, and inmates have been able to raise laying hens independently.

Abstract

Vaccine development and enhancing the body’s immune system are the focus in dealing with COVID-19. One way to improve the body’s immune system is to consume immunostimulating substances, such as health supplements. However, most people still think that health supplements can be consumed daily without certain restrictions because vitamins are not considered drugs. The purpose of implementing this activity is to increase knowledge about how to use vitamins and health supplements and improve community skills to identify natural or fake vitamins and health supplements. The targets of this community service activity were cadre mothers from all sub-district in Utan Kayu Utara Village. The method of implementing the activity is by direct education and giving leaflets. Community service activities in the Utan Kayu Utara sub-district ran smoothly. Participants were very enthusiastic about asking and discussing the material presented. The number of participants in the activity was 40 people. There was an increase in the average value of knowledge from 59.00 ± 11.0 to 86.50 ± 7.49 after providing education through counselling and media leaflets.

Abstract

Children living in orphanages are generally vulnerable to close-contact transmission diseases, including head lice infestation. The clinical manifestation of head lice infestation was relatively mild, such as itchy scalp, and hence it is often overlooked as a community health issue. Education plays an essential role in preventing re-infection and eradicating head lice infestation. The treatment options include chemical treatment using pediculicides and physical management by shaving the head and manually removing the parasite. This community service activity aimed to eradicate head lice from Yayasan Griya Asih Orphanage. A series of three activities were conducted at Yayasan Griya Asih Orphanage in Central Jakarta. Each activity was done around one month apart to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Firstyear medical students were recruited to participate in these activities to familiarize them with real-world community health problems. Student volunteers helped applied pulse doses of Permethrin 1% shampoo and provided health education activity. Fiftyfive Yayasan Griya Asih Orphanage residents joined this activity from mid-October until December 2022. Residents were instructed not to share their personal items to prevent re-infection. Health education activities were done using one-to-many followed by a one-on-one format. In conclusion, head lice infestation screening is essential in crowded environments, and permethrin 1% pulsed dose followed by personalized health education activities and pest control effectively broke the disease transmission chain and eradicated the head lice infestation.

Abstract

Kajhu Village is a coastal area within the Baitussalam District of Aceh Besar. In 2004, the village suffered significant damage due to an earthquake and ensuing tsunami, resulting in loss of life and damage to infrastructure. Despite the inherent disaster risk, Kajhu Village possesses great potential, including the scenic beauty of its coastline and the abundance of mangrove ecosystems. These natural resources can be harnessed to develop environmental and disaster-based tourism opportunities. In recognition of this potential, the Fasilitator Tangguh Bencana (FASTANA) - Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center at Universitas Syiah Kuala (TDMRC USK), an organization dedicated to community service and disaster mitigation, launched a disaster risk reduction program aimed at empowering the community and reducing the risk of disaster in Kajhu Village. Data collection involved observation and interviews with local residents. Community service activities focused on education and empowerment, including disaster preparedness education for the community and schools, promotion of the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems, and training and empowering the creative economy. Additionally, disaster literacy corners were established in schools within Kajhu Village. Through these programs, the goal was to create a community that is resilient to disaster and economically self-sufficient. By providing support and empowerment to the community, it is hoped that a new mindset can be fostered, resulting in greater independence and resilience. The disaster education provided aims to help individuals and families understand and implement effective disaster prevention strategies. The implications of the community service program in Kajhu Village are increasing community resilience and preparedness in dealing with natural disasters and developing the potential of coastal ecosystems to become sustainable ecotourism attractions, providing inspiration for communities in other areas to adopt a participatory and structured approach in an effort to increase resilience and disaster preparedness and developing the potential of coastal ecosystems.
