Abstract

This community service activity aimed to improve primary school students’ knowledge regarding environmental chemical exposure and kidney health while introducing a simple renal screening approach as an educational awareness tool. The program was conducted in 2023 at Sekolah Dasar Negeri 6 Kendari and involved 30 grade 5 and grade 6 students selected using accidental sampling. The activities consisted of interactive, age-appropriate education sessions and preliminary screening using urine protein dipstick testing, together with serum urea and creatinine measurements. Knowledge scores increased from a mean of 3.13 (SD 1.93) before the education sessions to 8.83 (SD 1.02) after the sessions (p < 0.001), indicating substantial short-term improvement in understanding. Most participants had negative urine protein findings, with a small proportion showing low-level positivity, whereas biochemical values were generally within expected ranges. The screening results are presented descriptively to support awareness and should not be interpreted as a clinical diagnosis or as evidence of impaired renal function. Overall, the activity demonstrates the feasibility of integrating school-based health education with simple screening to promote awareness and engagement, providing a practical model for community health promotion while avoiding overstatement of clinical implications.

Abstract

The incidence of cancer in the elderly population is increasing as life expectancy rises. In addition, the number of elderly patients with cancer has increased and is expected to continue to grow with advances in cancer treatment. Cancer commonly develops in elderly people aged ≥55 years. This study aimed to improve the elderly’s knowledge of cancer prevention. This observational, cross-sectional study was conducted in RW 23, Brontokusuman Village, Yogyakarta, and targeted the elderly who were members of the Pemberdayaan Kesejahteraan Keluarga/PKK (Family Welfare Empowerment). This activity included a pretest, followed by education delivered through direct presentations, and a posttest to evaluate outcomes after the educational intervention. A sample of 34 participants was recruited using accidental sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis as well as descriptive statistics through mean, median, mode, and percentage. The results showed that the most common age group was 51–60 years (44.12%). The mean knowledge score increased from 76.47 to 91.47, with a p value of 0.000, indicating a significant improvement in knowledge before and after cancer prevention education. The greatest increases in understanding were observed for questions 10, 8, 2, and 6, respectively. Several topics demonstrated a substantial improvement, particularly those that were previously poorly understood. Community-based education may be an effective strategy for cancer prevention, particularly for the elderly population.

Abstract

The Maggot Farming Information Dissemination Program in Neglasari Village aimed to help community members understand how to manage organic waste through black soldier fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens) farming and how to utilize BSF products, including larvae as high-protein animal feed and cultivation residue as organic fertilizer. This approach not only benefits the environment but also creates local economic opportunities. The program included theory sessions, hands-on maggot-farming practice, and interactive discussions on farming techniques and marketing strategies. It was conducted on January 12, 2025, at Saung Giwangkara River Tubing and was attended by 15 participants, including farmers and village youth. The program received a positive response, as evidenced by the formation of a maggot-farming group committed to independently developing this business. In addition to reducing organic waste, this initiative also provides a new source of high-nutrition animal feed. However, several challenges were identified, including limited pre-event promotion, which resulted in fewer participants at the beginning of the activity, and limited participant knowledge of marketing strategies. Despite these constraints, with stronger support from the village government and business partners, the program has the potential to develop into a sustainable enterprise. To ensure success, further technical guidance, improved access to funding, and the establishment of a village business unit or a maggot-farming cooperative are needed. These steps will help maximize the benefits of maggot farming for the people of Neglasari Village.

Abstract

This community engagement program (PkM) systematically mapped and strengthened the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) readiness of the Islamic Entrepreneur Boarding School (IEBS) at the Global Cahaya Nubuwwah Insani (GCNI) Foundation, Purwakarta. The program integrated pre- and post-intervention ESG literacy assessment, institutional ESG scoring, participatory sustainability mapping, and maturity classification to produce a structured diagnostic framework tailored to pesantren-based micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). A total of 40 participants completed baseline and post-intervention questionnaires, indicating a statistically significant improvement in ESG literacy (mean difference = 1.625; t = 13.275), which was categorized as a high-impact outcome. Institutional ESG assessment using 40 indicators across Environmental, Social, and Governance dimensions yielded an overall ESG Index of 61.67\%, placing the institution in the Developing (Programmatic) stage. The Social dimension demonstrated strong institutional embedding, whereas Environmental practices were operational but only partially measured, and Governance systems required further formalization. A dual-scoring mechanism that combined self-assessment with external validation enhanced reliability and reduced evaluation bias. The findings indicate that IEBS GCNI is transitioning from value-driven sustainability to more structured ESG governance. This study contributes a replicable ESG mapping framework that bridges green economy regulation with Islamic entrepreneur boarding school governance and supports sustainable MSME ecosystem development.

Abstract

The increasing demand for animal protein requires improvements in livestock production. Feed accounts for the largest proportion of farm operational costs. The use of fermented complete feed can help optimize farm productivity. The Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), actively supports livestock productivity through a community service program based on the application of Teknologi Tepat Guna (Appropriate Technology), with a focus on fermented complete feed production techniques. This community service program aimed to improve farmers’ capacity to produce fermented feed by comparing different types of silos. The Karya Manunggal Livestock Group in Sleman, which faces challenges in maintaining feed quality and ensuring a sustainable feed supply, was selected as the program partner. Four types of silos were evaluated, namely bunker silos, plastic drums, plastic bags, and jumbo bags, to identify the most effective medium for producing high-quality fermented feed. The results showed that drum silos and plastic bags produced feed with better physical quality, aroma, pH, and palatability than the other silo types. The drum silo was identified as the best option for maintaining fermentation quality, whereas the jumbo bag showed the greatest cost efficiency. This program successfully provided practical guidance for farmers in selecting appropriate silos according to local needs and conditions. Through this program, farmers’ productivity is expected to improve through the adoption of effective fermentation technology.

Abstract

Cooking oil consumption in Indonesia is relatively high, particularly in households and small-scale food businesses. Improper disposal of used cooking oil contributes to environmental pollution, whereas repeated reuse may pose health risks due to the formation of harmful compounds. Therefore, practical and community-based solutions are needed to promote safer and more sustainable waste management practices. This community service program aimed to enhance community knowledge and skills in utilizing used cooking oil as a raw material for producing value-added aromatherapy candles. The program was conducted in Laban Jaya Village, Citeupuseun, Lebak, through interactive educational sessions, hands-on training, and practical demonstrations. The implementation comprised three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. Program effectiveness was assessed using a pre-test and post-test approach to measure participants’ understanding of the characteristics of used cooking oil, its environmental and health impacts, appropriate disposal methods, and the process of producing aromatherapy candles. The results showed a substantial increase in participants’ knowledge across all assessed indicators after the training activities. Participants were also able to follow and carry out the candle-making procedures effectively during the practical sessions. Overall, the program was implemented successfully, as indicated by active participant engagement and improved awareness of environmentally friendly waste management practices. The activity encouraged participants to use used cooking oil for non-food applications, thereby supporting environmental protection efforts and strengthening community capacity building through the development of practical skills with potential economic value.

Abstract

In 2023, Southwest Papua reported a stunting prevalence of 31%. Raja Ampat was identified as the district with the highest contribution to stunting cases in the region. Early marriage accounted for 55% of these cases. This community service initiative aimed to prevent early marriage and stunting through the Comprehend, Ask, Respond, Evaluate (CARE) program for adolescents in Raja Ampat, Southwest Papua. The program involved all 51 third-year students at SMKN 2 Raja Ampat (Vocational High School 2 Raja Ampat). Participants’ knowledge and attitudes regarding early marriage and stunting were measured before and after the intervention using two instruments: an 18-item questionnaire on knowledge of early marriage and stunting and a 20-item questionnaire assessing attitudes toward early marriage. Univariate analysis was conducted to describe participant characteristics, knowledge levels, and attitudes. Bivariate analysis using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was performed to assess changes in knowledge and attitudes. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22. The results showed that participants’ knowledge improved significantly after the intervention, with low knowledge decreasing from 90.2% at pretest and 58.8% of participants demonstrating excellent knowledge at posttest (p=0.0001). Participants’ attitudes also changed significantly, from predominantly supporting early marriage at pretest (66.7%) to rejecting it after the intervention (88.2%) (p=0.0001). These findings indicate that the CARE program improved adolescents’ awareness of, and critical attitudes toward, early marriage, adolescent pregnancy, and stunting in a geographically isolated area. However, this evaluation measured only short-term outcomes immediately after the intervention, was conducted in a single school, and did not assess long-term behavioral changes. Overall, the CARE program demonstrates the potential of participatory school-based health education as a community engagement strategy for preventing early marriage and reducing future stunting risks in remote areas such as Raja Ampat.

Abstract

Air pollution poses a considerable threat to lung health worldwide, particularly in Jakarta, Indonesia’s largest urban center. Factors such as the extensive use of fossil-fueled vehicles, industrialization, and smoking contribute to poor air quality and affect children’s respiratory development and health. Therefore, this community service program aimed to educate elementary schoolchildren in Pejagalan, North Jakarta, about preventing the harmful effects of air pollution through comprehensive yet engaging learning methods. Pretests and posttests were used to evaluate students’ understanding and improvement in knowledge of the topic after the activity. This program integrated lecture-based education, an audiovisual approach through a visit to the Anatomy Museum, and game-based learning to enhance awareness. A total of 81 sixth-grade students participated in this activity under the supervision of the principal and seven teachers. A modest improvement was observed in several aspects of respiratory health, with female students demonstrating a marginally greater increase in knowledge, whereas male students exhibited a slight decrease. However, no significant difference was observed between pretest and posttest scores, either collectively (p = 0.756) or by gender (p = 0.243 for males and p = 0.196 for females), and knowledge remained within the moderate category. The findings suggested that students already had sufficient understanding of the topic at pretest; therefore, the increase in knowledge at posttest was not significant. Nevertheless, knowledge acquisition may be enhanced by optimizing content delivery and integrating diverse educational strategies, such as group-based simulations demonstrating the effects of smoking on lung color. Recognizing that early learning is essential for acquiring knowledge and fostering positive behaviors, this study underscores the importance of direct respiratory health education at an early age. This need was supported by favorable feedback from both students and teachers, indicating the value of this enjoyable learning activity. Therefore, continuous and sustainable respiratory health education through interactive approaches is essential for enhancing students’ knowledge acquisition and retention.
