Abstract

As a modern technological invention cinema has numerous potentialities such as economic, social and political power. Fascist regimes as well as film corporations have employed cinema as a tool of propaganda to control and mobilize the masses for the sake of their power longevity. Moreover, the character of film itself is a perfect fascist medium which came from the network of proto-fascism of the twentieth century civilization. By using various genres of Indonesian cinema from different eras as a case study, this article argues that Indonesian propaganda films have monolithic representation which can be described as a cult of "bapakisme" (patronism), "kultur komando" (command culture), marginalisation of women' role in Indonesian revolutionary movement and demonization of progressive women organisation, and glorification of the role of Soeharto in Indonesian revolutionary movement.

Abstract

Abstract

A dictum initiated by the Palo Alto group literally reads 'one cannot not communicate' allows us to examine the existence of the communication study. The biographical approach used by Rogers leads us to understand the emergence of the study pioneered by Darwin, Freud and Marx followed by the current development in the US. Nevertheless, by tracing the humanistic origins of the rhetoric tradition, there has been an unchained history between the rhetoric tradition and the print age of communication. This essay analyses the existence of the communication study through the history-biographical approach and the related researches.

Abstract

Survey of literature on women movement which takes place in different places in the world shows us that the movement means different things to different group of people. While the survey tells us that political setting highly influencial in shaping the movement, the very political nature of the movement is not necessarily lays in women relationship to the state. The jargon is that "personal is political." Some movement aims at practical change and other concerns with strategic change. In an attempt to map out the reason, as to why woman movement take place, this article identifies two possible reasons. First, the movement is organised in response to the abusive use of authority. If the movement is not organised in response to authoritarianism it could be taking place in response to the opening of opportunity structure.

Abstract

The downfall of the last authoritarian ruler in May 1998 marked the beginning of the transition to democracy in Indonesia. Before 1998, the autocratic government firmly monitored media content for decades. With the current broadcast liberalization, Indonesian televisions can produce almost any kind of program contents. However, a question arises, who actually controls television content in the era of liberalization? How do political and economic factors influence television workers in shaping content? This empirical research intends to focus on the influence politicians have on television program content in four elections in post-authoritarian Indonesia. The research question is: how do politicians influence television workers in shaping their content? The question needs a qualitative descriptive answer from various sources, including interviews with around 100 television workers in the 10 largest TV stations, participant observations, documents, television reports, and other data sources. Research findings reveal that the relationship between politicians and television intensified ahead and during political campaigns. Most television stations had conducted a relatively fair and nonpartisan coverage of the 2004 and 2009 election, but unfair and partisan in the 1999 and 2014 elections.
