Abstract

Physician decision making has an important impact on patient’s recovery and rehabilitation. A qualitative research of decision making process was conducted to explore how physicians arrive at a diagnosis decision. The informants were 11 skilled physicians who interviewed and participated in in-depth interview and observation. Data from interviews with physicians were used to construct and examine theories of decision making. The study found that decision making process would be better if supported by self-sensitivity, clear information, good standard operation procedure, alternatives availability of choices, adequate emotions, meaningful experiences, and good team-work. This study also found that algorithmic model encouraged the decision maker to think systematically and follow a logical sequence through decision making process. Bayesian model that based on probability theory had limitations on applications. The discussion suggests that second generation theories of behavioral decision can be chosen. Data on children and family characteristic were collected. Mother’s allocation time for their children were collected by interview using stucture questionnaires. Data on cognitive develop-ment were collected by testing subjects using Mental Development Index (MDI) of Bayley’s Scale for Infant Development (BSID) II. Dietary intake data were collected 2 days 24 hour food recall and Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). There were no correlation between mother’s allocation time for their children, fish food consumption, and child cognitive development. There were negative correlation among daily energy, protein and energy, protein contribution from fish with cognitive development of children under two years respectively. Energy from fish contributedto 14,5% score of cognitive development of the children There were negative correlation between fish consumption and cognitive development of children under two years. Keywords: fish consumption, cognitive development, children under two years, Gandus sub District, Palembang.

Abstract

Considering the increased concerns related to the issues of moral and spiritual leadership, I conducted two studies to develop the construct and measure of prophetic leadership. In the first study, three Indonesian Moslem leaders were interviewed to describe their leadership behavior and characteristics from their own praxis. Prophetic leadership is the ability to influence others accomplishing shared objectives that is reinforced by soul enlightenment as the prophets have shown in their time. In the second study, 40 items were generated for measuring prophetic leadership were administrated to 151 employee of Islamic University of Indonesia. The dimensions that represent prophetic leadership consist of sidiq (conscience centred), amanah (trustworthy and highly committed), tabligh (communication skills), and fathonah (problem solver). The construct is translated into a measure called prophetic leadership scale. The results show an empirical support for its construct validity. A positive significant intercorrelations among four dimensions were found. Items were loaded into four different mentioned dimensions. Practical implications and suggestions for future research are discussed. Keywords: Prophetic leadership, sidiq, amanah, tabligh, fathonah

Abstract

This study aims at uncovering: (1) whether the problem-based learning (PBL) method is effective to teach a theoretical subject such as Personality Psychology II; (2) how effective is the PBL method compared to the traditional method to teach a theoretical subject such as Personality Psychology II; and (3) whether the teacher factors affect the effectiveness of the PBL method to teach a theroretical subject such as Personality Psychology II. Three available classes of Subjects enrolling in Personality Psychology II, two of which were taught with the PBL method by a senior-male-demanding teacher and a junior-female-easy-going teacher respectively while the other one was taught with the traditional method by the senior-male-demanding teacher, participated in the study. Designed as a quasi-experimental research, the results showed that the first two aims of the study were confirmed. Regarding the teacher factors effect, the study showed a direct and positive relation between the Subjects’ number of study hour and their achievement disregarding both the teaching method and the teacher factors as well as a complicated relation between the Subjects’ learning satisfaction and their achievement presu¬mably involving both the teaching method and the teacher factors with the various aspects of teacher competencies. A further study on the last matter seems to be needed. Keywords: problem-based learning, out¬come-oriented assessment, pro¬cess-oriented self-directed learn¬ing, independent learning.

Abstract

Since Hofstede (1980) published his research about individualism-collectivism differences among countries, interest in cross-cultural study increased dramatically. However not all studies support each other. So the purpose of this study is to evaluate primary studies that studied individualism-collctivism differences. Articles selected from electronic data¬base (e.g. Proquest, EBSCO, and ERIC) for publication. Forty nine studies were found, but only 15 studies that were relevant. After final evaluation, only 3 studies with 7 data points that actually could be analized. This study found that there are diffe-rences between individualist and collectivist countries in horizontal collectivism. People in collectivist countries are more collectivist than people in individualist countries. In vertical individualism, horizontal indivi¬dualism, and vertical collectivism dimension, homogeneity coefficient (Q) shows that sample drawn from the same source differ systematically. However we can not do moderator analysis because of number of studies are limited. Thus, this study can not explain moderator variables that influence effectc size variation. Keywords: Individualism, Collectivism, meta-analysis.

Abstract

The objec¬tive of this research is to find whether, there are differences of emotion expression in three generation of Javanese culture in Yogya¬karta. This research is a quanti¬tative study, using Display Rules Assessment Inventory (DRAl). The subjects of this study were late adolescent, early adulthood and middle adulthood who were born and live in Yogyakarta. The result of this research shows, there was no difference of emotion expression in different generation of Javanese culture in Yogyakarta (F = 1,042 ; P = 0,356;). All three generation expressed emotion in the same way. This result describes that three generation categories who have been researched are still in the same norms on display rules of emotion in all situation. The researcher argue that the result is influenced by Javanese culture. The Javanese values of respect and the maintenance of social harmony (rukun) are base on principles of normative and moral guidance for social interaction within both the family and community. The strong emphasis on rukun (social harmony) has marked the typical Javanese as inexpressive, avoiding social and personal conflict. These values virtues contribute to harmonious social integration. Ideal human virtues include obedience to superiors (manut), generosity, avoidance of conflict, understanding of others, and empathy. These moral compo¬nents and values that colourize Javanese society are internalized by the children during the earliest years, and significant forces motivating the child's behaviour later in adulthood. Keywords: Expression emotion, three generation (late adolescent, early adulthood and middle adulthood), Javanese culture.
