Abstract

This study aims explore wether the Abangan Muslim community in Central Java, particularly in Blora, still exists and is growing or diseappered. Although previous studies have indicated the decline of Abangan religious practice, as Hefner puts it with his big question, “Where have all the Abangan gone?” field findings suggest otherwise. Using an ethnographic qualitative approach this article argues that several factors, including local government support, the role of community leaders, and the Samin community, influence the survival of the Abangan community in Blora. Further analysis shows these factors are interrelated and form a complex system in maintaining Abangan religious identity and practices amidst changing socio-cultural dynamics in the contemporary world.

Abstract

The development of Indonesian society has shown increasingly complex social dynamics, marked by increasing social fragmentation, intolerance, weakening communal solidarity, and a decline in the quality of civic participation, especially among the younger generation. Huma Betang philosophy is a local wisdom that lives in Bumi Tambun Bungai, Central Kalimantan. Huma Betang philosophy has noble values that can be used as a reference in living the life of society and the state, such as togetherness, honesty, equality, and tolerance. The values of the Huma Betang philosophy follow the values developed in Civic Education. The research aimed to address the challenges of character crisis, strengthen social cohesion, and emphasize the role of Civic Education as the primary vehicle for forming a national character rooted in local wisdom and oriented towards the nation's future. The study used a qualitative approach to explore the Huma Betang philosophy's values in developing national character education. Data were collected using interviews, documentation, and literature reviews, and subsequently analyzed with descriptive qualitative techniques. Source triangulation was used to ensure data validity. The Huma Betang philosophy, as a crystallization of Central Kalimantan's local values, serves as a crucial foundation for national character building. Through this character development, Indonesian citizens are expected to embody and practice these national cultural values in their social and civic lives.

Abstract

Religious conversion in multicultural urban societies is not only a matter of theological change but also a personal search for meaning and the restoration of subjective well-being. Theresearch aimedto analyze how religious conversion functions as a psychological adaptive strategy in responding to crises of meaning and the demands of urban modernity. Using a qualitativephenomenological approach, this research exploredhow these converts experienced religious conversion and how the process relates to changes in their subjective well-being. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews that examined their life experiences before and after conversion, their search for meaning, social relationships, and perceived emotional changes. The data were analyzed using interpretive thematic analysis informed by theories of subjective well-being, psychological well-being, religious coping, and religious conversion. The findings showedthat before conversion, participants experienced inner anxiety, a sense of meaninglessness, and emotional imbalance. Conversion to Islam was perceived as an adaptive response to existential crisis, leading to greater inner peace, life satisfaction, and clarity of purpose. Local Dayak and Banjar cultural values acted as cultural bridges that allowed the integration of Islam without severing cultural identity. In the post-conversion phase, support from the Muslim community, particularly through the Indonesian Convert Center, played a significant role in restoring and stabilizing the participants’ subjective well-being. These findings highlight the importance of culturally sensitive, inclusive, and psychologically oriented assistance for converts in urban multicultural contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the prayer ritual at the central pillar of the the house (mabbalo possi bola or posi’ boyang) among the Bugis and Mandar communities through the perspective of Living Sunnah. It aims to explain the meaning, practice, and religious relevance of the ritual in local Muslim society. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using normative theological and ethnographic methods. The study was conducted in Luyo District (Polewali Mandar) and Pammana District (Wajo). Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, and analyzed through triangulation. The findings show that the ritual combines the recitation of basmalah, shalawat, adhān, Barzanji, and supplications as expressions of gratitude and prayers for protection to Allah, while strengthening social solidarity through communal cooperation and shared meals. Interview findings also indicate that the tradition is understood by the community as not contradicting Islamic principles and may be categorized as ‘urf ṣaḥīḥ because it remains consistent with the principle of tawḥīd.

Abstract

The ecological crisis in West Kalimantan reflects not only environmental degradation caused by extractive development, but also the marginalization of Indigenous ecological knowledge and authority. The study aimed to examine Sean McDonagh’s ecotheology in critical dialogue with Dayak Kanayatn ecological-spiritual narratives to assess its relevance and limitations for developing a contextual ecotheology. The particular study adopted a qualitative critical-hermeneutical design. Data were collected through textual analysis of Sean McDonagh’s major works, a review of relevant literature on ecotheology and Indigenous ecological knowledge, and limited field-based materials consisting of Dayak Kanayatn oral narratives and documentation of ecological-spiritual practices in Lingga Village, West Kalimantan. The data were analyzed through thematic reading, contextual hermeneutics, and critical discourse analysis. The findings showed that McDonagh’s critique of capitalism, anthropocentrism, and ecological injustice remains significant, yet his framework requires recontextualization when read through Dayak cosmology. Concepts and practices such as Jubata, Nyangahatn, customary norms, sacred landscapes, and human–nature–spirit relations revealed that ecological responsibility was rooted in lived cosmology, reciprocity, care, and communal practice. The study concluded that Dayak ecological knowledge offers a critical correction to global ecotheology by shifting the focus from external stewardship toward locally grounded ecological responsibility.

Abstract

Existing studies on Islamic family life and family resilience have predominantly focused on normative-religious frameworks or individual family dynamics, while limited attention has been given to traditional settlement systems as socio-cultural structures shaping everyday family practices. The study aimed to analyse how the Taneyan Lanjhang system structures family interactions, organizes kinship relations, and contributes to the formation of harmonious family life in Madurese society. Using a qualitative approach with a focused family ethnography design, this research involved 15 informants from five extended families residing within one Taneyan Lanjhang complex in Madura. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and socio-cultural documentation. Moreover, data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. The findings indicate that Taneyan Lanjhang functions not only as a residential arrangement but also as a kinship-based social system that regulates intergenerational interaction, moral authority, collective responsibility, and religious practices within family life. The spatial proximity of households and communal spaces, along with the role of elders, contributes to mechanisms of conflict mediation, social control, emotional support, and resource sharing among family members. At the same time, the study also identifies tensions within the system, including limited privacy and the persistence of hierarchical authority in family relations. This study presents Taneyan Lanjhang as a socio-cultural and spatial framework through which family harmony and collective resilience are negotiated and maintained in the everyday lives of Madurese Muslim communities.

Abstract

Existing studies on Minangkabau culture have largely examined migration traditions, adat–Islam relations, and local wisdom, yet little attention has been given to the representation of Silek Harimau in film as a medium for constructing social identity, spiritual values, and local tradition. The study aimed to analyze how the film Merantau represents Silek Harimau as part of Minangkabau cultural identity and spirituality of the Merantau tradition. The particular study used a media approach and interviews with various community groups, cultural figures, and observers related to the views of the Silek Harimau. The findings cover several aspects, namely: traveling as a social identity of the Minangkabau people, traveling teaches the existence of spiritual values and local traditions to the Minang people, and the existence of philosophical values in the Silek Harimau. Moreover, the study recommended the importance of interviewing the Minangkabau people. Thus, the Silek Harimau in the film Merantau not only tells the story of social life but also depicts the social, spiritual, and traditional identities that are still maintained by the Minang people.
