Abstract

The understanding of religious orientation and free will are two distinct concepts, yet both influences how individuals make decisions. However, there has been no clear identification of how religious orientation affects the understanding of free will in ethical decision-making and moral responsibility among theology students. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between religious orientation and the understanding of free will among theology students. The research employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, and the primary data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis. The findings found out that religious orientation strongly influences theology students’ understanding of free will, as it serves as an ethical guide in decision-making. Faith, spiritual reflection, and personal experience also reinforce moral responsibility in the exercise of free will, affirming the close relationship between religious orientation and the understanding of free will.

Abstract

The increasing number of exploitations in mining is a threat, which has a serious impact on environmental damage and causes social, economic, and ecological losses. Meanwhile, the legal mechanism of environmental ethics has not been fully effective in terms of comprehensive protection in prevention or recovery. The study aimed to analyze the integration of Islamic environmental ethics principles into the legal framework of the role of hima conservation, primum remedium, and strict liability in strengthening environmental law. The method used normative juridical with a conceptual approach, case approach, and sources of Islamic law. The findings show that the hima conservation area is a place for traditional heritage conservation that maintains harmony among culture, humans, and the environment following the principle of maqasid syari’ah. Meanwhile, the limitation of industrial exploitation under the principle of primum remedium in positive law emphasizes the use of criminal law as a preventive measure and strict liability or absolute responsibility without any proof of fault. These three principles, if applied systematically into the framework of modern environmental law reform that integrates Islamic ethical principles into national environmental laws, will strengthen ecological justice and protection. It is supported by moral, cultural, and spiritual responsibility to protect the environment and build a sustainable legal system.

Abstract

The clean water crisis has become a pressing issue in highland areas such as Dusun Bunder, Klaten. Limited groundwater sources have encouraged the local community to independently develop rainwater conservation systems. This study aims to examine the practice of ecotheology embodied through the religious leadership of Romo Kirjito in water conservation, and to analyze its contribution to environmental sustainability and the strengthening of interfaith harmony. The research employed a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively through stages of data reduction, categorization, and interpretation based on ecotheological theory. The results indicate that water conservation in Dusun Bunder is not only technical in nature, but also integrated with religious values and local traditions. Innovations such as rainwater harvesting and electrolysis technology were developed through participatory community efforts. This research complements studies on the relationship between environmental spirituality and community-based conservation practices. The findings suggest that local leadership and interfaith values can serve as a strong foundation for sustainable water management. This model can be replicated in other areas facing similar challenges.

Abstract

The escalating climate crisis increasingly challenges theology to engage with ecological issues through contextual and inclusive approaches. While dominant eco-theological discourse often reflects Western paradigms, local cosmologies that embody ecological wisdom remain underrepresented. The study aimed to examine traditional beliefs as an eco-theological force for sustainability by reinterpreting Mori Keraéng, a Divine figure in Manggarai cosmology, through dialogue with Catholic eco-theology. The research employed a qualitative ethnographic method, using in-depth interviews and participant observation in historically and culturally significant villages in Manggarai and East Manggarai, involving traditional leaders, community heads, and local residents. The findings reveal that traditional practices such as ritual offerings, communal land management, and ecological taboos embody a living ecological ethic that restrains exploitation, fosters balance, and strengthens resilience against environmental degradation. These practices demonstrate that traditional spirituality functions not as a relic of the past, but as an active and transformative resource for sustaining life. The study affirms that local cosmologies, when theologically reinterpreted, can enrich Catholic ecological theology, contribute to global eco-theological discourse, and inspire sustainable practices to rebuild human-nature relations in the Anthropocene era.
