Abstract

This research investigated the effect of interest rate and foreign exchange rate on stock market development in Nigeria. This research was centered on two research problems. First, it was whether interest rate had a significant effect on stock market development in Nigeria. Second, it was whether foreign exchange rate had a significant impact on stock market development in Nigeria. The scope of the research covered the period from 1981 to 2017. Data for this period were chosen because it covered pre and post-liberalization periods of Nigerian financial system. This research made use of ex post facto research design. Secondary data were sourced from Nigerian Stock Exchange reports, Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletins, and National Bureau of Statistics publications. Data were collected on Stock Market Capitalization (SMC), Prime Lending Rate (PLR) and Real Exchange Rate (RER) (Nigerian Naira in relation to American Dollars of the United States). Data analysis was carried out with Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Cochrane-Orcutt Iterative techniques. The findings reveal that interest rate has a significant negative effect, and foreign exchange rate has a significant positive effect on Nigerian stock market development during the period covered. It is suggested that monetary authorities should strive to formulate policies that will make interest and foreign exchange rates stable, competitive, and at a level that will stimulate the investment of funds in the stock market.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to examine the determinants of Return on Assets (ROA) on the foreign exchange banks in Indonesia. The data used were the financial ratios of 27 foreign exchange banks in Indonesia in 2012-2016. The data were gathered from the published financial statements of the Indonesian foreign exchange banks. This research employed a Common Effect Model (CEM) as the most suitable panel regression model to analyze the data using the E-views statistical software. The findings indicate that from 2012 to 2016, the profitability of the exchange banks is largely determined by the Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), Loan to Deposit Ratio (LDR), Operating Efficiency Ratio (OER), and total debt. The findings also imply that apart from maximizing profit, it is important for the banks to abide by the regulations issued by the central bank or the Financial Services Authority in performing the banking operations. Negligence to observe the level of prudential and risk management will not only lead to profit loss, but it will also cause the failure of the banks.

Abstract

This research provided the new results on the determinants of tourist satisfaction. The data were obtained using questionnaire as the instrument. The variables used were destination and hotel service quality, destination and hotel image, tourist perceived value, tourist satisfaction, revisit intention, and word of mouth. Sampling technique was convenience sampling. The respondents were foreign and domestic tourists who traveled to Bali and stayed at three and four-star hotels. The sample size was 265. Then, the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was utilized in explaining the relationship between latent variables and hypotheses. The result shows that from eleven hypotheses, there are two rejected hypotheses regarding the influence of destination service quality and hotel service quality on the image. Destination and hotel image has a significant effect on revisit intention and word of mouth through tourist perceived value and satisfaction. Theoretically, tourist satisfaction determines the factors that affect it directly and indirectly. Practically, tourism business should manage the destination and hotel service quality because it increases the tourist perceived value.

Abstract

The main objective of the research was to investigate the accrual quality of Sharia-obedient firms listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). Specifically, this research attempted to study whether Sharia was an effective monitoring mechanism in reducing opportunistic managerial behavior through accrual quality and increasing the accuracy of the accounting report. The accrual quality or accrual truthfulness was measured using two widely-used proxies of accrual-based earnings management. The researchers utilized fixed-effect panel data of 84 manufacturing firms in 2013-2017 or 420 observations for the accrual quality computation and cross-section for the regression models (84 observations). This research also employed Two-Stage Least Squares (2SLS) regression method and Ordinary Least Squares method as the comparison. The researchers find robust results after mitigating heteroscedasticity and endogeneity issues. It shows that Sharia-obedient firms have a significantly higher quality of earnings. It also reveals that the close examination by regulators can improve accounting quality and attract new investors in Islamic market. Hence, the findings of this research may give insights to rule-maker and another accountingrelated department to improve the quality of Islamic or Sharia accounting practices in Indonesia.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to get an understanding of the intentions of accounting students in Indonesia to pursue a career as a professional accountant. The researchers employed quantitative methods to present a descriptive analysis of accounting students perception. The researchers collected 439 questionnaires from accounting students across universities in Indonesia with a random sampling technique. The findings show that the intrinsic factor (attitude) and parental or peers influence (subjective norm) affect the students’ intention to pursue a career as a professional accountant. The results of this research are expected to give insights to university’s accounting department and professional bodies such as Institute of Indonesia Chartered Accountant, and Institute of Certified Public Accountant to formulate strategies to achieve the desired number of accountants in Indonesia. In addition, regulatory agencies can use these findings as a basis to develop policies that guide universities or professional bodies to make the accounting profession more desirable.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the factors that influenced the purchase decision in e-commerce. These used factors were brand image, price, and trust which were adopted from the previous research. This research was based on quantitative research to test the research hypothesis and reveal the factors affecting purchase decision in e-commerce. The accidental sampling was used. From 200 questionnaires, there were 117 returned questionnaires from respondents who had made online purchases around Jakarta and Tangerang. Through the calculation using linear regression method in SPSS, the result shows that brand image has positive influences on purchase decision. On the other hand, price and trust do not influence purchase decision. Price is the level of secondary commitment to make a purchase decision. Thus, a lower price does not guarantee the convenience of online shopping. Meanwhile, trust in making online decisions are built from brand image, shop, and strong products in the market place. Those rejected variables are affected by research fields and target samples.

Abstract

The research proposed a Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing (TDABC) model for cost and human capital analysis in a small startup in Indonesia. TDABC discussed and illustrated the integration of capabilities into cost and performance in startups. The researchers applied a qualitative simulation method. The data were taken from actual regulatory data of wage and salary from the local government of Jakarta. The other data were simulated data based on a software development process for a small startup. The result indicates that the TDABC can assist the company to trace its performance and costs. Additional factors in implementing the costing system are provided for further research and practical considerations in adopting the costing system.

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the stock price behavior of banking sector in response to unstable macroeconomic variables in the Nigerian stock market. The research employed ex-post facto research design, and the data were subjected to Autoregressive Distributed Lag method of analysis to examine both the short and long run of the studied variables between 2009 and 2018. The findings reveal significant negative effects of interest rate and foreign reserves on the stock price behavior of the banking sector in the long run. Meanwhile, the inflation rate has a significant positive influence on stock price behavior. Then, the exchange rate is not statistically significant in influencing stock price behavior in the Nigerian stock market. It can be concluded that the stock price behavior of banking sector is influenced by foreign external reserve, interest rate, and inflation rate. It is recommended that the monetary policy rate should be reduced to decrease the cost of borrowing and enhance liquidity level in the stock market.
