Abstract

Bakground: Pineapple core (Ananas comosus) contains bromelain enzyme, which is known to remove dead skin tissue and promote the formation of new tissue. Pineapple fruit and core are also rich in bioactive compounds with potential pharmacological effects. In the oral cavity, it is beneficial in increasing salivary flow. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the toxicity and histological effects of pineapple core extract (Ananas comosus) in male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) using control and treatment groups. Methods: This experimental study used 30 male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus), which were administered pineapple core extract supplementation for 14 days. The feed formulation contained pineapple core extract at concentrations of 75% and 90%, with doses ranging from 5,000 mg/kg body weight (BW) to 10,000 mg/kg BW. Histological examination of rat liver tissue was performed at the end of the study. Results: Observation of the control group demonstrated normal liver histology, in which hepatocytes were radially arranged within the hepatic lobules. Similar findings were observed in treatment group (K1), where most hepatocytes appeared normal, with only mild degeneration and necrosis, as well as congestion in the sinusoidal area. Conclusion: Pineapple core extract did not demonstrate toxic effects up to a dose of 10,000 mg/kg BW, although minimal histological alterations in liver tissue were observed.

Abstract

Background: The demand for orthodontic treatment continues to increase globally, driven by greater awareness of dental aesthetics and oral health-related quality of life. Dental hospitals must develop structured service systems integrating clinical innovation with effective healthcare management. Self-ligating bracket systems represent a contemporary orthodontic technology designed to improve treatment efficiency, reduce chairside time, and enhance patient comfort compared with conventional systems. Purpose: This study developed a generic implementation framework for self-ligating orthodontic treatment services in dental hospitals, using Nala Husada Dental Hospital, Surabaya, Indonesia as a case model. Methods: A descriptive implementation framework approach was used to analyze orthodontic service development. Framework development involved four stages: pre-implementation analysis, clinical workflow design, integration of orthodontic innovation, and post-implementation monitoring. The model integrated healthcare service management components: input, process, output, outcome, and continuous improvement. Service performance indicators included patient visits, treatment acceptance rate, appointment adherence, medical record completeness, and patient satisfaction.. Results: The proposed framework consists of five key components: strategic preparation and resource readiness, standardized clinical workflow, integration of self-ligating orthodontic technology, performance monitoring using measurable quality indicators, and continuous service improvement through periodic evaluation. Implementation of the framework supports improved service organization, enhanced clinical workflow efficiency, and better monitoring of orthodontic treatment outcomes.. Conclusion: The developed framework provides a practical model for implementing self-ligating orthodontic services in dental hospitals. It integrates clinical innovation with healthcare management principles and may serve as a reference for institutions developing modern orthodontic services while maintaining quality, efficiency, and patient-centered care

Abstract

Background:Interactive digital education may support oral health promotion among school-aged children. This study described temporal changes in oral health behavior and plaque index following exposure to the Android-based Quitee application among children aged 8–11 years. Methods: A one-group pre-experimental time-series study was conducted among 126 students at SD Negeri Tamamaung I, Makassar, Indonesia, selected by proportionate stratified random sampling from 183 students. Participants used Quitee in three supervised sessions per week for three weeks (approximately 30 minutes per session). Behavior was assessed using a 13-item yes/no questionnaire, and plaque was assessed on six index teeth using the Löe and Silness Plaque Index. Measurements were taken at baseline and at three weekly posttests. Overall differences were analyzed using the Friedman test, followed by paired Wilcoxon signed-rank tests with Holm adjustment. Results: Median behavior scores at baseline and Posttests 1–3 were 8.0, 10.5, 11.0, and 12.0, respectively; median plaque-index scores were 1.80, 1.50, 1.30, and 1.20. Overall differences were significant for behavior (χ²(3)=236.46, p<0.001; Kendall’s W=0.626) and plaque index (χ²(3)=378.00, p<0.001; Kendall’s W=1.000). All six paired comparisons for each outcome remained significant after adjustment (adjusted p<0.001). Conclusion: Behavior scores increased and plaque-index values decreased over the measurement period following Quitee exposure. Because the study had no control group, these changes cannot be attributed specifically to the application. Controlled studies with longer follow-up are needed.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries in children remains a major public health concern due to its high prevalence and propensity to progress to pulp tissue involvement. The thinner enamel and dentin of primary teeth accelerate bacterial penetration to the pulp and periapical tissues. Purpose: This case report describes the endodontic management of pulpal necrosis with a periapical abscess in a mandibular primary second molar. The unique value of this case lies in the integration of emergency trepanation to manage severe acute infection with a specific biocompatible obturation material in a primary molar that served as a space maintainer in a developing dentition.  Case Report: An 8-year-old boy presented with food impaction in tooth 85 without accompanying pain. Clinical and radiographic examination confirmed pulpal necrosis with a periapical abscess. Case Management: Treatment was initiated with open access, trepanation, and placement of intracanal dressing. Subsequent visits involved root canal preparation using the conventional step-back technique, irrigation with 2.5% NaOCl, and intracanal medication with calcium hydroxide. Obturation was performed using a combination of Ca (OH)₂ and iodoform paste (Metapex), followed by final restoration with a stainless-steel crown. Conclusion: At the 19-day post-obturation follow-up, clinical evaluation demonstrated complete resolution of symptoms, and radiographic findings indicated early signs of healing and an absence of lesion progression. Within the limits of this single case and a short follow-up of approximately 19 days, structured endodontic management employing initial trepanation, conventional preparation techniques, and a calcium hydroxide–iodoform obturation material was associated with early clinical improvement and early radiographic findings consistent with healing. Longer-term follow-up is required to confirm periapical healing, tooth preservation, and guidance of the permanent successor's eruption until natural exfoliation. Background: Dental caries in children remains a major public health concern due to its high prevalence and propensity to progress to pulp tissue involvement. Abstract

Background: Fish bones are a potential source of calcium and phosphorus for food fortification. The compositional effect of substituting skipjack tuna bone flour for wheat flour in Simpul cake has not been established. Purpose: This study aimed to compare the proximate composition, calcium and phosphorus content of fortified and unfortified Simpul cake. Methods: One independent batch was prepared for each formulation. A homogenized laboratory sample from each batch was analyzed in triplicate for moisture, ash, protein, fat, calcium, and phosphorus; carbohydrate was calculated by difference. Results were summarized as mean ± standard deviation. Because there was only one batch per formulation, comparisons were descriptive and no inferential statistical test was performed. Results: Compared with the unfortified cake, the fortified cake had higher protein (17.12 ± 0.03% versus 15.18 ± 0.05%) and ash (0.72 ± 0.01% versus 0.65 ± 0.02%) contents. Carbohydrate, moisture, and fat contents were lower. Calcium increased from a reported 0.02 ± 0.001% to 1.99 ± 0.001% on a dry-weight basis, and phosphorus from 0.03 ± 0.002% to 0.38 ± 0.001%.. Conclusion: Substitution with skipjack tuna bone flour was associated with changes in the measured composition of Simpul cake and may provide a use for a local fish-processing by-product. Further studies are needed to assess mineral bioavailability and any potential dental-health effects.

Abstract

Background: Panoramic radiographs provide comprehensive visualization of dental structures and treatment findings that may support forensic human identification through antemortem and postmortem comparisons.Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate radiographic dental treatment patterns on panoramic radiographs and their potential role as supportive markers for forensic human identification. Methods: This retrospective observational study evaluated 100 digital panoramic radiographs of subjects aged 21–40 years obtained from a dental radiology database. Radiographic variables including missing teeth, dental caries, dental restorations, impacted teeth, endodontic treatment, residual roots, and periapical lesions were assessed using standardized radiographic interpretation procedures. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square analysis were performed to evaluate associations between radiographic dental treatment patterns, age group, and sex. Results:Impacted teeth represented the most frequent radiographic finding (84.0%), followed by missing teeth (60.0%) and dental caries (52.0%). Significant associations were identified between age group and dental caries (p=0.048), dental restorations (p=0.036), and impacted teeth (p=0.006). Subjects aged 31–40 years demonstrated higher frequencies of dental caries and dental restorations, whereas impacted teeth were more prevalent among subjects aged 21–30 years. No statistically significant association was identified between sex and radiographic dental treatment patterns (p>0.05). Frequency combination analysis demonstrated considerable variation in radiographic dental treatment combinations among individuals. Conclusion: Panoramic radiographic dental treatment patterns may provide supportive forensic information in human identification because combinations of radiographic findings and previous dental treatment history may demonstrate considerable individual variation.

Abstract

Background: The stem bark extract of ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwageri) contains phenolic compounds, proanthocyanidins, and flavonoids. It exhibits therapeutic potential in supporting wound healing through immunomodulatory mechanisms and acceleration of inflammation resolution. Purpose: To determine the effect of 5%, 12.5%, 20% ironwood stem bark extract gel on neutrophil counts in the buccal mucosa incision wounds of male wistar rats. Methods: This experimental study utilized a posttest-only control group design with 12 treatment groups. The groups received topical applications of gel formulations containing 5%, 12.5%, and 20% ironwood stem bark extract gel, along with gel base as a negative control. Each treatment group was euthanized at 6, 24, and 72 hours. Neutrophil counts were quantified and analyzed to evaluate the effects of ironwood stem bark extract gel on wound healing progression. Result: Two-way ANOVA revealed significant effects of both treatment and time (p < 0.05). Bonferroni post hoc analysis demonstrated: (1) all treatment groups exhibited significant differences between 24 vs. 6 hours and 72 vs. 24 hours; (2) the 5%, 12.5%, and 20% concentration significantly differed from the control at both 6 and 24 hours; and (3) the 20% concentration group remained significantly different from the control at 72 hours. Conclusion: The 20% ironwood stem bark extract gel significantly increased neutrophil counts at 6 and 24 hours and decreased them at 72 hours compared to the 12.5%, 5%, and control groups.

Abstract

Background: Propolis obtained from Trigona sp. has attracted attention as a potential source of bioactive compounds for oral-health research. However, the chemical profile and antioxidant capacity of propolis obtained in Bali remain insufficiently characterized. Objectives: This study characterized the phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity of propolis obtained from Trigona sp. in Bali, Indonesia, to provide baseline information for subsequent dental research. Methods: Raw propolis was extracted with 96% ethanol by maceration. Quantitative analyses were performed for total flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins, alkaloids, saponins, steroids, and sugars. Antioxidant radical-scavenging activity was determined by means of the DPPH assay, and the IC₅₀ was derived from the concentration-response relationship. Results: The extract contained 1.87% w/w total flavonoids, 1.59% w/w phenolic compounds, 1.14% w/w tannins, 0.25% w/w alkaloids, 0.77% w/w saponins, 30.6% w/w steroids expressed as β-sitosterol equivalent, and 8.17% w/w sugars. DPPH testing yielded an IC₅₀ of 147 µg/mL, classified as moderate according to the criteria applied in this study. Conclusion: The study establishes a quantitative phytochemical and antioxidant profile for the investigated Bali propolis preparation. The observed DPPH activity provides preliminary biochemical evidence for further dental investigation but does not demonstrate clinical efficacy. Future studies should identify individual bioactive compounds and assess antimicrobial, antibiofilm, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxicity, formulation, and clinical outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Tooth transposition is defined as an abnormality in the position of teeth in the same quadrant that are interchanged within the dental arch. Although rare, this abnormality can cause aesthetic and functional problems. The permanent maxillary canine is the most frequently transposed tooth. Objective: This study aims to provide evidence that anatomical correction can be a feasible alternative in carefully selected cases to achieve favorable functional and esthetic outcomes. Case: This case report describes the successful treatment of a left maxillary canine transposed with a lateral incisor. A 16-year-old female patient presented with crowding of the upper anterior teeth, negatively impacting esthetics. The left maxillary canine erupted between the lateral and central incisors, and primary tooth 63 remained intact. A fixed orthodontic appliance with a straight wire system was used in a 0.022 bracket slot to initiate active treatment. Tooth 23 erupted ectopically between teeth 21 and 22, while the retained primary tooth 63 occupied its expected position. Case Management: To facilitate distal movement of tooth 23, it was retained and bonded to the upper left posterior teeth (24, 25, and 26) using an elastomeric chain with very light force. After tooth 23 approached the location of tooth 63, the deciduous tooth was removed, and gradual vertical traction was applied using a 0.12 NiTi wire, followed by a larger diameter NiTi wire and rectangular stainless steel to achieve the correct root position and angle. The correction of complete lateral canine-incisor transposition has a high risk of root resorption and periodontal complication. However, this study successfully performed anatomical repositioning without any tooth extraction. Conclusion: This case demonstrates that anatomical repositioning can be achieved with good esthetic, functional, and periodontal results through careful treatment planning, the use of light orthodontic forces, and tight anchorage control.

Abstract

Background: The gingival depigmentation procedure can result in extensive open wounds, patient discomfort, and an increased risk of infection. A Non-eugenol Periodontal Pack (NEP) is a common material to protect wounds from mechanical trauma and increase patient’s comfort but does not promote healing. Liquid Platelet-rich Fibrin (PRF) is clinically proven to regenerate tissues, however, its effectiveness following gingival depigmentation remains limited. Purpose: This study aims to compare post-gingival depigmentation outcomes after application of liquid PRF and NEP. Methods: Clinical trials were conducted on five healthy subjects who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Gingival depigmentation was performed in the anterior region using a scalpel, followed by the application of NEP (left side) and PRF (right side). Healing Index (HI), pain perception by Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and Wound Healing Score (WHS) were measured on days 5, 7, and then statistically analyzed with a significance value of p<0.05. Results: The HI on day 5 of the liquid PRF group was higher than NEP (p<0.05), however, the HI on day 7, VAS on days 5 and 7, and WHS on days 5 and 7 were not significantly different (p>0.05).  Conclusion: Liquid PRF accelerates wound healing faster than NEP. Despite this difference, both materials. deliver similar results regarding patient comfort and epithelialization.
