Abstract

This research’s title is “Host Profession which had Reflected in Manga Hosutan e Youkoso by Makoto Tateno”. This research aimed to know the criteria to be a host in a host club in Japan. This research used the sociology of literature theory by Ratna (2009), literary trilogy theory by Wellek and Warren (1993), and semiotics theory by Danesi (2012). The results of this research showed that there are two criteria to be a host, i.e. physical criteria and non-physical criteria. In detailed, has an attractive face and has a good looking respectively. On the other hand, there are five parts of non-physical criteria to be a host, which have tolerance to alcoholic beverages, have skills to communicate with costumers, have a broad insight, adjusted well with costumer needs, and should be between 20 years to 30 years. Host profession which had reflected in manga Hosutan e Youkoso are host assignment, host level, working hours of host, host earnings, host identity, and host club. There are three parts of host assignment, i.e. welcoming costumers, assisting the costumers, and giving attention to costumers. Moreover, there are two parts of host level, that are number one host and host as herupu ‘a junior host who help the number one host in host club’.

Abstract

Religion is an important part of human life, because it is considered to have meaning in life. Because it takes an important role in the existence of society and social community. All aspect of religion contained in the inscription have an important role in the reign of the king Ugrasena. The problem discussed in this research was what are the aspects of religion that contained in the inscription during the reign of the king Ugrasena and related to the religious impact to the social life of society during the reign of the King Ugrasena This research used some method of collecting data, analyzing the data, and theory to solve the problem. The method of collecting data that used were observation, literature review, and interview. The next step, the data were procesed by using qualitative analysis, contextual analysis and analysis etnoarchaeology. The theories that used as the basic theory in this research is the theory of religion, ritual theory and fungsional structural theory to determine the role of religion to social life of the society during the reign of King Ugrasena. The results of this study found that the religious aspects, which were contained in inscriptions during the reign of King Ugrasena that there were the begining of the sects in ancient Bali, religious ceremony, sacred building, the tools of religious ceremony, as well as the religious figures in the erly days of ancient Bali. The role of religion to the social life of the society in the reign of the King Ugrasena showed that religion had a role in the society social interaction such as the basis of reference in the society, and also play a role as the legitimation of the power of King Ugrasena Kingdom

Abstract

The title of this study is Figurative Language Used By Characters in the Sherlock Holmes 1 Movie Script “The Study in Pink”. The aims of this study are to discover the types of figurative languages and their meanings used in the movie. The data source was taken from the internet website and this movie script was purely from the Sherlock movie in season one. In collecting data, the method used for this study was documentary method. In analyzing the data, the study used qualitative method. The major theory used is the theory of figurative language proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963), and the supporting theory about the meaning proposed by Leech (1974). The result shows that there are four types from ten types of figurative language appearing in the movie. In addition, there are three types that are used from seven types of meaning.

Abstract

Figurative language can appear in various types and the meaning may not be determined by its components. This study aims to identify and analyze the meaning of figurative language found in the song lyrics “Passenger's album all the little lights”. There are two theories used in this study. The first is the theory of figurative language proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger, and the second is the theory of meaning by Leech as the supporting theory. The data in this study were directly taken from Passenger’s fourth album. The album consists of twelve songs. They were collected by documentation method and note taking technique. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative and descriptive method. This study applied informal method to present the analysis. The result of this study shows that there are nine types of figurative language found in song lyrics. They were allusion, simile, metaphor, irony, personification, hyperbole, dead metaphor, metonymy, and paradox. Most of the figurative expressions found in those songs were similes. Four out of seven types of meaning used in those lyrics in order to understand the figurative meaning in the song lyrics; they were connotative meaning, conceptual meaning, affective meaning, and collocative meaning. All the songs which are analyzed have the main theme about life and love.

Abstract

This study entitled Semiotics Study of Symbols for Sandy the Mute Character in Rise of Guardian Movie is aimed at identifying the concept as the representation of the symbols and also describing and analyzing the meaning behind the use of the symbols. This study focuses on a character which has disability in producing sound, so he only uses symbols to communicate instead of words or body language. The data of this study were taken from Rise of the Guardian, a movie released by Collombus Home Production in 2011. The qualitative method was used in obtaining the relevant data. The data were collected using the documentation method; the data were taken by capturing and cropping the symbols. The relevant data were analyzed descriptively and in narrative form. The concepts were analyzed using the theory proposed by Saussure about signifier and signified, and were descriptively explained using draft. The meaning was analyzed using the theory of seven types of meaning proposed by Leech and then narratively explains and the final result was the conclusion of the symbols according to the types of meaning. The results of analysis show that symbols do not always have conceptual meaning, and most of them symbolize the further concept to the form of symbols. The concepts that are discovered mostly have different concepts, meaning that the concept is far from its conceptual concept; a dolphin can resemble the happiness of children and so on. The meaning of the symbol can be represented according to the situation where the symbols are used and are also according to the speaker and the producer of it. The combination of symbols can also convey a different meaning.

Abstract

This study discussed two literary works of oral prose namely I Ubuh story and Bagus Diarsa story, which aims at understanding and investigating the existence of a text in another text or the intertextual relation in the story of I Ubuh and Bagus Diarsa. This study is conducted based on the structural theory from Teeuw and intertext theory from Kristeva, while the data collection is done by using free guided interview and supported by recording technique, taking notes, transcription and translation techniques. The methods used in analyzing the data are qualitative method and descriptive analytic method. In presenting the data analysis, the method used is informal method supported by deductive and inductive techniques. The findings of this study show that there are structures which form the story of I Ubuh and Bagus Diarsa namely incident; chronological plot in the stories; characters and characterizations such as main character, secondary figures, and complementary characters; the settings of both stories are setting of time, place and situation; the theme of the stories is Satya Samaya; and the moral. Besides, the findings show that there is intertextual relation between the story of I Ubuh and Bagus Diarsa, they have the similar motives namely chicken feathers that used to show directions and places in the stories. Meanwhile, the difference between these stories is I Santeng went southeast to reach the sea floor, and I Bagus Diarsa went north to reach the Banyan Tree.

Abstract

The statue is an archaeological remains which was built by people to fulfill certain needs in purpose. The archaeological remains in Bali are still in use and purified by its society by storing inside a temple, one of them is in Pura Puseh Desa Bale Agung Bukian, Payangan, Gianyar. This research has been done before by the Cultural Heritage Preservation Office, however it is just for conservation purpose and yet into deeper analysis. This research has an approach to acknowledge form, timeline, and function of an art statue remains in Pura Puseh Desa Bale Agung Bukian, Payangan, Gianyar. In this research, I used some theories such as form and functionality theory. I used some methods to solve these issues such as in first phase to collect data are observation, interview, and reviewing literature. The second phase are processing a data by analyzing data such as qualitative, iconographic, and comparative analysis. Based on the the analysis result, it can be concluded that the form of the statue remains in Pura Puseh Desa Bale Agung Bukian are 4 pieces of bhatara manifestation statues, 24 pieces of bhatari statues, and 10 pieces of fragments. The remains in Pura Puseh Desa Bale Agung Bukian can be put into Bali Madya style, because they had the same characteristic features with the Bali Madya’s statues group in Pucak Penulisan Temple, bhatari statue in Penataran Sasih Temple, bhatara statue in Sibi Agung Kesian Temple, and a couple of statues in Subak Taulan Kerobokan Temple. Until now, the remains in Pura Puseh Desa Bale Agung Bukian in Payangan, Gianyar are still being utilized by temple’s penyungsung as a place to worship. People and temple’s penyungsung considered that the remains had a magical religious power which the praying ceremony and piodalan was held in certain days. The remain which was stored in pelinggih believed by the people of Bukian village as a place to pray protection, safety, and fertility for agriculture and livestock of Bukian society.

Abstract

This writing entitled “A Case Role of Verbs in the Movie Script Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret” was conducted in order to be able to identify the types of verb, to find out the semantic structure and the case role between the verb and its cases.The data in this study were taken directly from clauses and sentences found in the movie script. Those data were collected using the documentation method and note taking technique. In analyzing the data, Case Grammar theory proposed by Walter Cook (1979) was applied by qualitative method. In addition, in order to present the data analysis clearly and neatly, informal method was used to describe and explain the data.The result shows that there were three types of verbs found in the movie script. Those verbs are state, process, and action verbs. In addition, the semantic structure of the data is shown by using case frames. The case frames of the data are basic state, basic process, basic action, state experiential, process experiential, action experiential, state benefactive, process benefactive, action benefactive, state locative, process locative, and action locative verb. Besides, the case role of the datain surface structure is as agent, experiencer, benefactive, object, and locative. Furthermore, the analysis of deep structure showed that there are three covert case roles found in the data namely lexicalized, coreferential, and build-in.

Abstract

This research’s title is “Self Injury Reflected in Ayumu Character on the Manga Raifu by Keiko Suenobu’s”. This research aims to determine the characteristics of self injury, factors cause and the impact of self injury reflected on Ayumu character. This research used theory of literary psychology by Wellek and Warren (1993),self injurious behaviours theory by Walsh (2006), and semiotics theory by Danesi (2011). The results of this research showed that there were three characteristics of self injury experienced by Ayumu character, namely hatred to herself, depression dued to trauma or severe stress triggered by a person’s loss, sexual abuse, oppression, and tendency to avoid others. The factors that cause Ayumu to became self injury characters were the lack of affection and attention in the family, the lack of effective communication, and the feeling of neglection.. Moreover, two negative impacts from self injury on Ayumu character, were found the addicted characters against self injury action and anti-social personality.

Abstract

Prefix is a bound morpheme which is added to the initial of the base word. This study is concerned with the types, meanings and functions of the English Prefixes found in a scientific book entitled “Agricultural Development in a Frontier Region of Java: Besuki, 1870 – Early 1990s” by Nawiyanto. This study applied two theories in order to analyze the data. The first is the theory of type and meaning of the English prefixes proposed by Quirk (1973). The second is the theory of functions of the English prefixes proposed by Bauer (1983). The data of this study were taken directly from the scientific book itself. The data were collected using the content-analysis method and note-taking technique. The collected data were analyzed using the descriptive and qualitative method. Then, all of the analyses were presented using both formal and informal methods. The analyses show that almost all types of the English prefixes found in the book. However, most of them belong to the class-maintaining English prefixes and the attachment of those prefixes give a new meaning to the base words after its attachment.
