Abstract

This contribution discusses basic concepts of Chi-Square (χ2) test as a kind of analytical statistics and illustrates its application to one of the central issues in linguistics, namely form-meaning relationship. As a case study using Indonesian Web as Corpus from the Sketch Engine, this paper measures the association between morphosyntactic forms of words in the lexical field of panas ‘hot’ and their (non-)metaphorical usages. The χ2 test demonstrates a highly significant and robust association between the morphosyntactic form of words with the root panas ‘hot’ and their preference for (non-)metaphorical usages. The clear effects are shown by (i) the strong preference of the inchoative form memanas ‘to become hot’ for metaphorical usage, and (ii) the strong dispreference of dipanaskan ‘to be caused to be hot’ and panas ‘hot’ for metaphorical usage. This finding has implication on the predominant semantic trait of words with certain morphosyntactic forms, thus capturing the form-meaning relationship in language.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to apply the method of the metaphor identification procedure (Pragglejaz Group, 2007) to find out the linguistic metaphors in Japanese poetry, and apply the theory of conceptual metaphor (CMT) (Lakoff & Johnson, 2003) to find out the conceptual metaphors that motivate the use of linguistic metaphor in the poetry. Descriptive qualitative method was applied in this research. The data of this research were taken from Takuboku Ishikawa dan Segenggam Pasir book, written by Edizal (2000). The result shows that metaphor identification procedure (MIP) provides a explicit, reliable, and flexible instrument for identifying linguistic metaphors and conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) provides a systematic tool to identify the concepts behind the linguistic metaphors. The linguistic metaphors identified in the poetry are: koi no amasa to nagashisa, kanashimi no tama, and te ga shirokukatsu dainariki. The conceptual metaphors that are found to underlie the linguistic metaphors are: VIRTUE IS WHITE, LOVE IS FOOD OR DRINK, SAD IS INSTABILITY

Abstract

This research aims at finding the types of procedures applied in translating Indonesian plant phrases into English, as well as analyzing the mapping of meaning components of the phrases from the source language to the target language. The data source is a bilingual biology textbook for senior high school students. The data in this study are in the form of two-word noun phrases about plants. Data were collected using observation method, random sampling method, and note-taking technique. The data were analyzed by using theories of translation procedures proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet and Natural Semantic Metalanguage. The result showed that the types of translation procedures applied are transposition and literal translation. The meaning components of the phrases of the source language are mostly transferred to the target language.

Abstract

Ubud Village in Gianyar Regency is one of the tourism areas in Bali where Balinese people are bilingual because they have mastered more than one languages. In the environment of Balinese language, there also live other languages including national language (Indonesian) and foreign languages (such as English, Japanese, and Mandarin). Balinese people nowadays, especially in tourism area, have difficulties in using Balinese language so they use mixed languages, namely Balinese language with Indonesian language, with English language, or Mandarin. This phenomenon might indicate that Balinese language appears to be marginalized. This article aims at investigating languages that are used in Balinese language environment in Ubud. Qualitative method is applied with sociocultural approach, and theories related to the use of language are applied. The study shows that the marginalization of Balinese language appears to exist because there are various ethnic groups of immigrants who live in this village. The village of Ubud has already been occupied by expatriates who deliberately come to Bali and settle in Ubud. This effects the choice and use of a language.
