Abstract

Low-income settlements in Semarang City have become an issue in many cities, including Semarang City. This issue is caused by settlements that are formed organically in prohibited areas. This paper aims to find the applied typology by finding specific types that persist or recur in low-income settlements in Semarang. The typology can be used to design low-income mass housing in the city. This study used a qualitative and purposive sampling methods for the selected samples. A field study was conducted in three kampongs in Semarang with varying topographical conditions, specifically in Kampong Jurnatan (0-2% land slope), Kampong Wonosari (15-40% and>40% land slope), and Kampong Patemon (2-15% land slope). The results show several main characteristics of low-income housing in Semarang, including multifunctional rooms, rooms or areas for storage in every hsouse and communal spaces, and linear circulatory spaces that are also multifunctional for socializing in the Kampong area. These findings can be implied in the design criteria for horizontal and vertical low-income settlements.

Abstract

This paper is a literature and precedent study examining the heritage trail of the City of Istanbul, Turkey. Istanbul, Turkey, was chosen as the object of the precedent study because the city is rich in history and Islamic civilization. As the title implies, this study also aims to reveal how the heritage trail is applied as a tourism of Islamic culture and history. As a reference, a guide on the heritage trail is used to review each trail presented for analysis. Four heritage trails in the City of Istanbul have been selected to represent all existing heritage trails. These four trails are the Istanbul Introduction Walk, the Istanbul Old CLineline, the Mosques of Istanbul Lane, and the Old European Quarter line. Four heritage trails were chosen as a representation of the many heritage trails in Istanbul, Turkey, and are four paths that have spatial meaning both spatially and in terms of building figures that can represent all heritage trails of Istanbul, Turkey. The study is carried out on the study of precedents by applying narratively the method of literature and precedent study. Data was collected through field observation techniques, observations, and experiences of the architectural space of the City of Istanbul. Direct description of objects is also done by doing the experience of architectural space on each object discussed in this precedent study. The results of this study are intended as a discourse and additional insight for all circles, both academics and the broader community, so that they better understand the existence of cultural heritage around it. With the guidance of the heritage trail, the study is carried out based on existing principles, looking at the grouping of buildings on each path presented based on the year of civilization, architectural style, history, and supporting elements.

Abstract

The Sang Nila Utama museum building is a vernacular architectural form of traditional buildings that have changed from Riau Malay architecture. This shape change certainly affects the thermal performance of the building itself, which in turn will lead to thermal comfort. Comfort is influenced by a) temperature (oC), b) relative humidity (%), c) wind speed (m/s), and d) MRT (mean radiant temperature). This study aims to determine the thermal performance of the building corridor in terms of spatial climatic factors on temperature and humidity. The method used in this study is a quantitative descriptive correlation, measuring variables of temperature and humidity in the museum corridor and interior. The results of research on the temperature variable in 2 (two) days showed a deasedecreasehe the average thermal performance of the microclimate on the porch of 0.2%, which was shown from the + (positive) value, and from the porch to the interior, there was an increase of 1%, which was shown from the value - (negative). From the average value of the temperature variable, the museum is out of a comfortable condition according to SNI T-14-1993-03.

Abstract

Other than technique function and building aesthetic, architecture represents power relation and knowledge in its design. The architect’s knowledge will crystallize into a building as a text, and visitors can read it. This research discusses the relation between power and knowledge, which produces discourse in the design of Ganjuran Temple Church, Yogyakarta. The method that was used is qualitative descriptive and random probability sampling. This research reveals the relationship between power and knowledge owned by architects and explains the discourse. Architect’s ideology is about expanding the gospel wrapped by Mataram culture. The message is delivered in 6 concepts consisting of 13 architectural elements. The mean value results show that visitors know there are messages behind the building, but they do not understand the majority meaning. As locals see the common form, Mataram culture dominates the knowledge. So Mataram culture is the strongest discourse from visitors’ view. On the contrary, as the newest ideology for Javanese society, the Catholic value is the lowest readability because of the implementation of minor elements that is not the visitors’ focus.

Abstract

Health protocols must continue to be implemented in preventing the Covid-19 virus even though conditions in Indonesia currently show a reduced rate of spread and infection. This is because the government has implemented a mass vaccination process for all Indonesian citizens. Moreover, PKKM status has been abolished and gives residents freedom to do their activities inside or outside the room. The main objective of this study is to investigate the impact of material selection on passive cooling in residential buildings in response to the risk of Covid-19. The comfort level of occupants when they are inside the house can be determined from the use of residential materials in this Gresik Regency. The identification process uses the method of quantitative heat transfer comparison technique of each building material in several areas of residential buildings. The process of identifying existing materials in buildings against plans for the use of materials in the residential redesign process. Achievement of durability here is the accuracy of placement and selection as well as the characteristics of the materials used. Conduction and radiation processes are contributing factors to the heat distribution process in buildings. Thermal comfort is greatly influenced by the use of materials compared to the rate of air exchange. The heat transfer value can be of great value if the material used has a U-value and a large surface area and this causes the level of thermal comfort in the building to be low.

Abstract

Currently, architectural items need to be energy efficient in addition to being aesthetically pleasing and practical. Residential or residential-type objects are not exempt. Residential buildings need to be kept at comfortable temperatures and with appropriate lighting while also being mindful of their energy usage. The importance of energy usage in building design depends on several aspects. These include the building's orientation, the material of the building envelope, the shape of the window, and the building plan and room volume. In order to attain the Energy Consumption Intensity (IKE) value required by the 2012 Regulations of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, a suitable form of building design is therefore necessary. Performance-Based Design is one method that could be used to address this issue. A design methodology known as "performance-based design" takes into account each architectural element's performance. One piece of performance-based design software is Sefaira. To simulate energy use in a design, one must first enter building element and climate data into Sefaira. According to the research findings, a building design is considered efficient with an IKE if it satisfies the following criteria: (1) the building's geometric shape leads to a curved shape or has many sides; (2) the building's proportions are the same or, if it is slightly elongated, it is oriented towards the west and east; (3) the building reduces the amount of glazing material coverings; and (4) the building uses external Venetian shading.

Abstract

The increasing of people’s demand on waterfront public space has motivated the waterfront concept that meet the visitor needs. One way to know public space design has met visitor needs is from understanding the preference on public space. Because of those demands, few spaces have emerged in Parepare, one of them is Senggol Beach. Waterfront public space has developed into two distinct spaces. This distinction create a contrast condition which enables people to pick one of the space between them. The huge difference in visitor number potentially creates unbalance to both of spaces. Therefore, Senggol Beach would not be optimal. In this case, public space clearly require the understanding of visitor needs through understanding of their preference. The purpose of this study is to analyze the space aspect which underlying the choice of space in the waterfront. This research method is mixed-method. While, this research design is cross-sectional using cross tabulation and biplot image analysis. Through questionnaire survey, respondents which consist of 85 people were asked to choose one of the spaces which they liked, including their reason to like it according to space aspects. The result shows that 66% respondents like A space and 35% like B space. The reason of many respondents is regarding facilities aspect. Therefore, available designs in B space does not satisfy most respondent’s preference.

Abstract

The acoustic quality in the space is one of the important parameters to determine the comfort and health inside a building. To create a proper acoustic design, the function, environment, and noise around the rooms needed to be considered. Hall as one of the public facilities also needs a proper acoustic design for its interior space. Therefore, a study to identify the acoustic quality of the hall was conducted. Two methods were adopted in this study i.e., field measurement to collect existing acoustic data and computer simulation using I-Simpa V.I.3.4. Data showed the decibel value of sound source is 77.5 dB. The results from the simulation using various acoustic materials i.e., gypsum equipped with sound isolator as wall material, glass fiber panels as ceiling material, curtain, and wood as floor material can reduce the noise from the environment around the building between 34.6 – 46.4 dBA and reverberation time (RT) between 1.00 – 0.49 second.

Abstract

Indonesia is a tropical country and has sunshine throughout the year. Therefore, the use of sun shading on the building façade is important. In other hand, Balai Besar Wilayah Sungai Bengawan Solo is one of infrastructures for flood management and control in the Bengawan Solo River area. The current building design uses many wall openings without being equipped with sun shading, allowing the high intensity of sunlight entering the room. Due to this issue, a study was carried out to identify the shading effect on the façade design of Balai Besar Wilayah Sungai Bengawan Solo. Tropical architecture concept was used as a design approach. Simulation method used SketchUp was conducted to compare the effect of before and after secondary skin applied on the façade. The simulation results showed the existing building design had potential to enable high sunlight entering the room. The exposed area to the sunlight was 4 m2 – 11 m2 in the morning and 14 m2 – 31 m2 in the afternoon. While the results after secondary skin was applied on the façade showed a decrease in the area that exposed to the sunlight. It became 2 m2 - 3 m2 or decreased around 33% - 57% in the morning and 3.5 m2 - 8 m2 or decreased around 50% - 60% in the afternoon. Thus, it proves applying secondary skin on the building façade is effectively reducing the intensity of sunlight that enters the room.
