Abstract

This study aims to facilitate students to learn and work together in teams, mutual contribution of thoughts, and responsibility for the achievement of learning outcomes as a group or individually, encouraging students to improve learning achievement. Students can have a deeper understanding, develop leadership skills, increase a positive attitude, and increase student self-confidence. The research will be conducted in the Micro-Teaching class, namely in the reteaching cycle, where students will be divided into groups of 3 people to work together in a collaborative learning process to achieve the goals of the re-teaching process. Students can present new or previously learned content using new methods or approaches. The research data was collected through observation and interview methods. Analysis was carried out through analytical descriptive methods and qualitative content analysis, which were then presented formally and informally. The research on this topic is very important to get an idea of good cooperation in breaking permanent learning standards into more flexible learning targets. the divisions of students into groups allow learning instructions to be more in line with the needs of students to provide feedback. In particular, collaborative learning can help students achieve the target of learning objectives in class. A more comprehensive study through this research will also provide information or contributions to the learning process for students and teachers in the teaching and learning process in class.

Abstract

Overlexicality is lexical form to describe the lexical meaning in the translations works. The purpose of overlexicality is to create something to be eye catching and powerful but the translator still maintains the equivalence meaning from the source language to the target language. This research aims to focus on the how overlexicality occur in the sexism expression in a source text are translated into a target text. The study used qualitative descriptive method, the data in the forms of words, phrases, or sentences denoting sexism expression have been taken from the English novel The 19th Wife and its Indonesian translation, Istri ke-19. Based on the sampling data that has been analyze, the results show that the sexism expression related to hostile and benevolent were translated into overlexicalized. The translator used this method to emphasize the issues presented, however the results convey the sense that the translation depicts women in a very inferior and bad light because overlexicality occurs in sexist expressions related to sexual violence experienced by women.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the effectiveness of contextual storytelling in enhancing English speaking skills among students, with a particular focus on incorporating local wisdom from North Sumatra. The study was conducted with English Education students at STKIP Al Maksum, specifically targeting second-semester students across two classes. The research employed a developmental approach, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The participants engaged in storytelling activities based on local wisdom, integrating both digital storytelling tools and traditional narratives to improve their speaking abilities. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests, student feedback surveys, and observations. The results demonstrated significant improvement in students’ fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary usage, and coherence in English speaking. Additionally, students showed a deeper connection to their cultural heritage and reported increased confidence in sharing local stories in English. The integration of digital tools, such as video and audio recordings, proved highly effective in enhancing student engagement and creativity. Overall, the findings suggest that the contextual storytelling model, rooted in local wisdom, is an innovative and effective method for improving students’ English speaking skills while fostering cultural awareness. This study contributes valuable insights to the field of English language teaching by demonstrating the positive impact of incorporating local culture and digital storytelling in language learning.

Abstract

This study discusses how social media helps students learn English at a Madrasah Aliyah in Papua, Eastern Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to find out what social media are used by students and how they use them to learn. This study used a qualitative method with observation, interviews, and documentation. There were five students and one English teacher as respondents. The results showed that students often use Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok to learn. Instagram is used to do schoolwork, YouTube is used to learn grammar, while TikTok helps students increase their knowledge and improve their pronunciation. of the three applications, students prefer to use TikTok because they find it easier to understand lessons through interesting and not boring videos, compared to reading long texts or listening to direct explanations. Social media provides freedom in learning, makes students more enthusiastic, and more active in the learning process. Even so, the role of teachers remains very important to guide so that the use of social media continues to support learning goals. These results are in accordance with the theory that states that students will learn better if they feel free and motivated from within themselves. With good guidance, social media can help students improve their English skills.

Abstract

This review evaluates a study exploring the use of the Sticky Notes Strategy to enhance reading comprehension among tenth-grade students at Islamic Senior High School. The study adopts a quasi-experimental design involving 38 students, equally divided into experimental and control groups. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered, and data were analyzed using SPSS 23. The results indicate significant improvements in reading comprehension scores for the experimental group, with a mean difference of 27.789 (p < 0.05). Results showed that sticky notes significantly improved students' ability to identify main ideas by 30% compared to traditional methods. This strategy increased engagement and encouraged metacognitive interaction with texts. The findings underscore the potential of simple, interactive tools to foster deeper learning in EFL contexts and promote student-centered literacy practices in Indonesian classrooms.

Abstract

It is imperative to reassess the requirements of pupils in order to accurately understand their present circumstances, as the Covid-19 pandemic has significantly altered methods of teaching and learning. Given this circumstance, the researchers carried out a survey to determine the precise English language prerequisites of D3 nurses who are pursuing their bachelor's degree, in order to assess the level of importance for students and aid in the development of a suitable curriculum. The study utilized the technique developed by Hutchinson and Waters (1987) to investigate the specific English language requirements and sub-skills that nursing students need in order to effectively pursue their field of study in post COVID-19 era. In addition, the study examined the students' viewpoints on the pertinence of the courses offered to them. Data was gathered by employing questionnaires and conducting interviews. The study's findings suggest that the respondents' view of the full online English language courses they took had a significant impact on their professional growth as nurses. In addition, the participants demonstrated a significant degree of skill in Listening (Grand Mean = 4.1) and Reading (Grand Mean = 4.07) compared to Writing (Grand Mean = 3.97) and Speaking (Grand Mean = 3.92). The research findings suggest that the respondents consider English courses to be relevant. However, there is a need for improvement in the areas of Writing and Speaking.

Abstract

This study examines how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers at SMK Negeri 1 Pringapus design and implement creative teaching practices under the Emancipated Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka), utilizing Torrance's (1962) framework of creativity, which encompasses fluency, originality, elaboration, and flexibility. Employing a qualitative single-case study design, data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and analysis of lesson plans from three EFL teachers with varying backgrounds. Thematic analysis revealed that the Emancipated Curriculum provides significant space for teacher autonomy and creativity, particularly in differentiated instruction, integration of digital tools, and student-centered activities. However, the level of curriculum alignment and creativity varied among teachers, influenced by their pedagogical readiness and openness to innovation. Teachers who embraced differentiated strategies and technological tools demonstrated higher levels of creative fluency and flexibility, while others maintained conventional approaches with limited adaptation. These findings indicate that while the Emancipated Curriculum has the potential to foster innovation, effective implementation requires ongoing professional support. The study offers insights into the critical role of teacher agency and reflective practice in realizing meaningful curriculum transformation.

Abstract

The focus of linguistic research has been shift in the past five years from face to face communication to online communication. This research employed content analysis on a number of articles that had been published in linguistics journals across Indonesia since 2020 to 2024, with linguistic aspect in social media as the main focus of the research. This current research has revealed that in the past five years, the number of publications used social media as their data source had improved. Among those publications, the most dominant research designed was qualitative descriptive. In addition, content analysis is the most dominant method to analyze the data. Instagram is the most frequently platform used as data resources in linguistic research. Researchers are particularly interested to investigate pragmatic aspects towards the online communication in social media. Based on the findings, future research is encouraged to use more diverse research designs, expand the scope of linguistic domains, and explore new platforms such as threads to better capture evolving digital language trends. Researchers are also advised to continuously adapt their methods and analyses to the dynamic nature of online communication in Indonesia.

Abstract

Conventional teaching methods, such as grammar-translation and learning through memorisation, summarisation and lectures are still often applied in learning English as a foreign language (EFL). However, the effectiveness of these methods in improving students' language proficiency is still a matter of discussion. This study aims to examine teachers views on conventional teaching methods in EFL and their effects on students’ participation, enthusiasm and learning outcomes. This study applied a qualitative approach through interview techniques. Information was obtained from six EFL students who had experience of traditional methods in their classes. Data were analyzed through thematic method to find the main patterns in the teachers' views and experiences. The findings indicated that the traditional method was successful in improving students' grammar comprehension and writing skills. However, many teachers recognized that this approach is not effective in improving students' speaking and listening skills. In addition, traditional approaches often lead to boredom and lack of student participation in learning activities. Thus, many teachers choose to combine traditional methods with communicative approaches or technology to enhance the learning effect. This study recommends the application of blended learning methods that integrate grammar structures with active communication exercises to produce more interesting and effective learning for EFL students.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ perceptions of using the MemoryLingo application to enhance their English listening skills. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research involved 34 junior high school students who completed questionnaires, with two purposively selected participants interviewed to gain deeper insights. Data were collected through Likert-scale questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, focusing on comprehension, engagement, confidence, and independent learning. The results indicate that the majority of students (over 85%) agreed or strongly agreed that MemoryLingo improved their listening comprehension, accuracy, and ability to identify key spoken phrases. Participants reported that features such as interactive exercises, audio-visual content, and immediate feedback were highly effective in facilitating learning. Thematic analysis revealed four central themes: improved comprehension, increased confidence, promotion of independent practice, and the benefits of interactive features. Although some students noted difficulties in processing fast-paced audio, overall perceptions were positive. The findings suggest that MemoryLingo can serve as a valuable supplementary tool in listening instruction, supporting both classroom learning and autonomous study. This study highlights the practical relevance of integrating digital tools into English language education and recommends further research with larger and more diverse samples to explore long-term impacts and comparative effectiveness with other learning applications. Future research should examine its long-term effects and compare its impact with other digital tools.
