Abstract

This study analyzes the changes in language style and English learning motivation reflected in 181 Instagram captions from three international students pursuing higher education in Indonesia. The analysis is based on Martin Joos's theory of language styles and Dörnyei's L2 Motivational Self System. This qualitative descriptive research focuses on comparing captions from the period before and during their study in Indonesia. The findings indicate a significant shift. Prior to their studies, the dominant language style was casual (41.41%), and motivation was rarely expressed (2.02%), categorized primarily as L2 Learning Experience. However, during their time abroad, language styles became more varied. While the casual style remained dominant (39.23%), the use of the consultative style also increased (23.20%), suggesting an adaptation to audience and communicative goals. Motivational expressions also increased significantly, especially L2 Learning Experience (19.34%), followed by Ideal L2 Self (6.08%) and Ought-to L2 Self (2.21%). These changes highlight the strong influence of social, academic, and personal development on language use and motivational expression on social media. The findings support Dörnyei's assertion that language motivation is not static but evolves in response to a learner's experiences. This research contributes to the literature on digital discourse and language learning motivation in the context of English education.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of the POCA (Print–Oral–Contextual–Action) literacy program to enhance vocabulary mastery and increase student involvement in English learning among fifth-grade students at SD Al-Fatih Islamic School. Using Classroom Action Research (CAR), the study was conducted in two cycles with a total of 20 students. The program focused specifically on verbs related to daily activities such as waking up, walking, eating, and going to school. Data were collected through vocabulary tests, structured classroom observations, and student interviews. Quantitative findings revealed substantial improvement in students’ vocabulary scores, rising from a mean of 68.4 (pre-cycle) to 76.2 (post-test Cycle I) and 85.6 (post-test Cycle II), with 92% of students meeting the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) set at 75. Qualitative data also showed higher engagement, with students demonstrating active participation and improved confidence in using verbs contextually. These findings suggest that literacy-based learning, particularly the POCA model, is effective because It not only strengthens vocabulary acquisition but also fosters motivation and meaningful involvement in the English learning process.

Abstract

Despite the critical need for written communication and emergency management proficiency in aviation, existing research in aviation English education has primarily emphasized speaking and listening skills, neglecting cadets’ writing abilities. This gap is particularly concerning given the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 10 requirements, which demand accurate and coherent documentation in emergency scenarios. Addressing this void, the present study aimed to develop reliable and valid assessment instruments for assessing aviation cadets’ procedural writing skills in managing flight emergency and urgency situations. This study also examined the Indonesian Aviation English instructors’ perceptions on the developed assessment instruments. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) design using the ADDIE model—Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation—the study constructed test instructions and an analytic scoring rubric based on learning indicators derived from ICAO Annex 10. The instruments underwent expert validation (CVI = 1.00) and were trialed with 24 third-semester aeronautical communication cadets. The inter-rater reliability test showed good consistency (ICC = 0.802–0.890), confirming the rubric’s reliability in practical use. Results revealed that the instruments effectively assessed both linguistic skills and operational understanding. Aviation English instructors found the assessment instruments pedagogically valuable as they promoted integrated language learning and critical thinking skills through the application of a sequenced procedure in managing flight emergency and urgency situations. However, limitations include the small sample size and the absence of multimodal performance assessments. Future research should expand implementation across diverse aviation academies and explore integration with AI-driven tools or scenario-based simulations. This study contributes to English for Specific Purposes (ESP) pedagogy by providing a validated framework for enhancing and assessing domain-specific writing in high-stakes professional contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of intra-sentential code mixing in the YouTube podcast video by Timothy Ronald featuring Agatha Chelsea, titled "Misi Membangun 1000 Sekolah ft Agatha Chelsea". Code mixing, especially within a single sentence, is a common phenomenon in casual spoken interactions among bilingual speakers. This study focuses on identifying the various forms and communicative purposes of intra-sentential code mixing used by the speakers. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, and the data were obtained through observation and transcription of the YouTube podcast. The analysis is based on Hoffman’s theory (1991), which highlights several reasons for code mixing, including discussing certain themes, repeating for explanatory purposes, articulating personal identity, interjection, and emphasizing particular ideas. The findings show that there are 10 instances of intra-sentential code mixing, where Indonesian and English are frequently combined to enhance clarity, fluency, and emotional emphasis. It can be concluded that intra-sentential code mixing is not only a linguistic habit but also a strategic tool for effective communication in digital media, especially among bilingual young adults. This research contributes to broader discussions in digital communication studies by illustrating how code mixing reflects identity, audience engagement, and linguistic creativity.

Abstract

Metaphor provides emotions as an important role in literary works. Especially for personal emotional experiences in a modern song lyric. This research highlights the use of concrete-to-abstract metaphor to represent emotional experiences in a song lyric. While most previous studies only focus on classifying the types of metaphor. This study fills the void by analyzing how concrete-to-abstract metaphors are used in a modern song lyric to express personal emotion. This study aims to learn deep understanding about figurative language by analyzing the concrete-to-abstract metaphors that are found in Ariana Grande song lyrics. This study used descriptive-qualitative methods to analyze the data based on theory that was used in semantics. The data were collected from three songs in Ariana Grande’s album entitled Eternal Sunshine. Data analysis utilized Knickerbocker and Renninger (1963) figurative language theory for the metaphor analysis and Stephen Ullman (1964) for the metaphor types analysis. The study shows lyrics using concrete-to-abstract metaphor. In addition, these findings can expand the understanding of the song writer’s characteristics. It is hoped that this study can be referenced in the study of music, language, literature, and enrich further understanding and appreciation about figurative language and metaphor in various modern music.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze directive speech acts found in the animated movie Moana 2 using Searle’s (1979) theory of illocutionary acts. Directive speech acts are utterances that are intended to persuade the listener to take action, either directly or indirectly. The data were gathered through observation, by observing the film and reading the official script. According to the categories of directed speech acts, the utterances were categorized and interpreted using a descriptive qualitative technique. The result of data analyis showed that every character in the movie utilized a total of 45 directed speech acts. They were divided into five categories: warnings, suggestions, requests, commands, and advice. Command represented 40% of the data, making it the most dominant category among them. Requests and suggestions were following. This dominance highlights Moana’s strong leadership role, as she regularly employs commanding words to influence people and steer the plot. Additionally, the results showed how the social context, character relationships, and narrative suspense of the film all influence the directed speech actions. In this study, the role of directive acts in animated film was analyzed in detail, which advances the subject of pragmatics. It should offer helpful references for future studies on media language usage and speech act theory.

Abstract

This study investigates how EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers utilize teaching strategies to enhance students' speaking competence, particularly in Grade 8 classes. The data were collected through 30-minute observations per teacher and 15-minute semi-structured interviews with both teachers from the boarding school, conducted both inside and outside the classroom. This study employed a descriptive case study approach, and the data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis to identify recurring patterns and categorize the strategies used in the classroom. The findings revealed that teachers employed a combination of strategies both inside and outside the classroom. Inside the classroom, strategies include vocabulary drilling, question-and-answer sessions, discussions, and group work. Meanwhile, the teachers from outside the classroom employed a range of teaching strategies, including group work, vocabulary drilling and memorization, as well as question-and-answer sessions and conversations. The above strategies demonstrate that interaction strategies, such as dialogue, conversation, and Q&A, encourage the use of speaking language, while vocabulary drilling provides the foundation for speaking development. The results offer insight into how boarding schools can promote lifelong language learning by striking a balance between classroom instruction and additional practice. The study highlights the practical value of interactive strategies in fostering speaking competence. However, as the research was limited to two teachers in a single institution, the findings provide transferable insights for similar EFL boarding school settings, particularly in highlighting the practical value of interactive approaches for fostering speaking competence.

Abstract

Communication is a fundamental aspect of human interaction, and its effectiveness depends greatly on the cooperation between speakers. One influential framework for analysing this cooperation is Grice’s Cooperative Principle (1975), which consists of four conversational maxims: quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. This article aims to identify the types of cooperative maxims as proposed by Grice (1975) found in the horror novel Five Nights at Freddy’s: Fazbear Frights #2 Fetch by Scott Cawthon. The horror genre is particularly relevant for this analysis because it relies heavily in dialogue to build suspense, ambiguity, and psychological tension, making the application of conversational maxims especially significant. The objective of this study is to identify and classify the types of cooperative maxims, namely quantity, quality, relevance, and manner, that are used in the dialogues between characters. The research applies a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through observation and note taking techniques, focusing on the dialogue between characters. The analysis revealed that the most frequently used type of maxim is the maxim of quantity (22 occurrences), followed by the maxim of quality (13), relevance (9), and manner (8). These findings indicate that the characters in the novel generally cooperate in communication by providing sufficient, truthful, relevant, and clear information. This research highlights how cooperative maxims are applied in fictional texts, contributing to effective communication and narrative coherence within the horror genre. In addition to narrative cohesion, the results of this study also suggest broader implications for literary and linguistic studies, demonstrating how pragmatic principles can serve as tools for understanding character dynamics, thematic construction, and stylistic strategies in fiction.

Abstract

This study examines substitution errors in the English pronunciation of President Joko Widodo, focusing on a speech delivered at the “ASEAN–Australia Special Summit 2018.” The research aims to describe the systematic substitution patterns that occur in his pronunciation and to explain how these are influenced by his first languages (L1), Javanese and Indonesian. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the data were collected through repeated video observation, phonetic transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), and comparison with standard British English pronunciations from the Cambridge Dictionary. The analysis is framed within Roach’s (1991) segmental phonology, which classifies vowel and consonant changes by articulatory features, and Brown’s (2008) theory of language transfer, which explains how L1 sound systems influence L2 production. The results show 28 recurring substitutions, such as /v/ → /f/ or /p/, /θ/ → /t/, diphthong simplification to monophthongs, vowel shifts to fit the Indonesian/Javanese five-vowel system, and hyper-articulation of weak syllables. These findings confirm that the deviations are not incidental but stem from systematic L1 interference, aligning with prior research on Indonesian EFL learners’ pronunciation challenges. This study contributes to understanding how high-profile non-native English speakers adapt segmental features in formal, international contexts, and the findings have pedagogical implications for pronunciation training, particularly in preparing speakers for contexts where intelligibility and accuracy are critical. Keywords: pronunciation errors, substitution patterns, Javanese, Indonesian, language transfer.

Abstract

This research analyzed the language style used by YouTuber Bailey Sarian in the video “Chris Watts – 2000 Page Discovery Murder, Mystery & Makeup” using Martin Joos's (1967) language style theory, which classified language styles into five types: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. The purpose of this research is to determine what language style Bailey used in that video and which language style is dominant. Using descriptive qualitative methods, the document data collection technique, Miles and Huberman’s model analysis technique, and analytical template, the researcher identified and analyzed the video transcript, resulting in a total of 253 data, consisting of 5 formal styles, 113 consultative styles, 133 casual styles, and 2 intimate styles. The results show that Bailey Sarian uses informal and flexible language, making the storytelling more engaging, easy to understand, and emotionally resonant, while still maintaining its informative purpose. No frozen language styles were found in the analyzed data. It can be seen that the dominant language style used was casual. This research concluded that the appropriate language style served an important role in the effectiveness of storytelling content on social media such as YouTube.
