Abstract

This study aims at investigating the correlation between professional development programs and teachers’ self-efficacy. The professional development program is one of the ways that is believed can enhance teachers’ self-efficacy which is directly related to teaching skills and practice in the classroom. The data that is related to Professional Development Programs and teachers’ self-efficacy was obtained using PDP and TSES questionnaires. Thirty English teachers from Blangkejeren district were involved. The data then were analyzed by using Product Moment Correlation to obtain the correlation between the variables and the degree of the correlation. The findings indicated that a professional development program correlated positively with teachers’ self-efficacy (p-value= 0,380 < 0,05). Furthermore, the degree of the correlation is 0, 381 which indicated a weak correlation but positive. The findings implied that Professional Development Program is not the only element that might impact teachers' sense of efficacy. The implication of the result of the professional development program and teachers’ self-efficacy was discussed.

Abstract

WhatsApp is one of the most popular application used by students and lecturers. WhatsApp application gives convenience in interacting and communicating. This research aimed at determining the use of WhatsApp as a medium of communication between lecturers and students in supporting English learning activities at Islamic Education Study Program. The research method applied is quantitative research. The data source is 60 students from IAIN Palopo. This research used the Google form media in survey. The results show that most of the students felt that it was easier for them to communicate and support learning activities compared to other online media. Furthermore, more than 80% of students stated that the application of WhatsApp had a positive impact on their learning activities and supported the improvement of their communication with lecturers. So, WhatsApp is one of the media that has advantages including facilitating communication and supporting learning activities. The ease in using WhatsApp makes students feel helped by this application and becomes one of the important and preferred means of communication for students

Abstract

This study discussed the influence of using English songs on the listening comprehension of English department students at Universitas Tidar. It used a quantitative research design and collected data through an online questionnaire containing 10 statements rated on a Likert scale. The questionnaire was completed by 30 students, and the data was analyzed using measures of central tendency (mean, mode, median) and measures of variability (standard deviation). The results showed that most students had a positive attitude towards using English songs and found them easy to access and play. There was some variation in the responses, with a higher standard deviation in some statements, which may suggest that not all students had the same level of enthusiasm or agreement about the usefulness of English songs. Overall, the results indicated that English songs could be a valuable tool for improving listening comprehension and creating a more relaxed learning atmosphere for the students at Universitas Tidar.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the figurative language in most popular product review of makeup in Nikki Tutorials in Youtube channel. The data were the existing utterances delivered by the content creator. This research used the theory semantic of figurative language from Perrine (2018) to categorize the utterance that appeared in the data source into the function and reason of figurative language. A qualitative research design was employed in conducting this study followed by document analysis and observation as the instruments. This research used observational method that theorized by Sudaryanto (2015), to collect the data in the product review. The result showed that the kind of figurative language was separated into twelve types there are simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, metonymy, symbol, allegory, paradox, overstatement, understatement, synecdoche, and irony and the reason of figurative language specifically imaginative pleasure, bringing additional imagery, additional emotional intensity, and saying in brief compass. Related to the types, the researcher found 42 data that contains the kind of figurative language. There were 21 data of hyperbole, 4 data of simile, 1 data of metaphor, 7 data of personification, 2 data of apostrophe, 1 data of metonymy, 2 data of symbol, 2 data of paradox, 2 data of understatement. Whereas the reason of figurative language, the researchers found 30 data. 25 data increase emotional intensity, 2 data bringing additional imagery, 2 data saying in brief compass, 1 data afford imaginative pleasure. Moreover, the most used in the kind of figurative language is hyperbole whereas the reason of figurative language is increase emotional intensity which always appeared in the data analysis.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the types of commissive speech act in movie “Army of the Dead” 2021. This research used the theory commissive speech act from Searle and Vanderveken to categorize the utterance that appeared in the data source into the types of commissive speech act. This research applied descriptive qualitative research method by Merriam as the data is in the form of words and phrases. This research used observational method from Creswell to collect the data. According to Creswell (2014), observational method is a method when the researcher observes and collect the venture of the research object. To find out the data, note-taking technique by Merriam (2009) will be used in this research. Note-taking is a method for the researcher find the data by gathering the form of words that relate to the topic. This research result shown that there are 33 data of commissive speech act in movie “Army of the Dead” 2021. Which are, 6 data of refuse, 6 data of offer, 1 data of promise, 12 data of accept, 7 data of assure and 1 data of guarantee. This result shown that the type of accept is the most used type of commissive speech act with (12 data) that used in this movie. And the type of promise and guarantee are the rarest type with (1 data) that used in this movie.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to identify direct and indirect apologizing speech acts in the utterances of the characters in the movie "Venom let there be carnage". The data source for this study was taken from a movie entitled "Venom let there be carnage" in which many apologizing speech acts are found in it. The method used is a qualitative method. The theory used to identify apologizing speech acts was put forward by Searle & Vanderveken (1985) while to identify the direct and indirect used by the characters in the film using the theory put forward by Yule (1996). The results of this research found 14 types of apologizing speech acts consisting of 12 direct uses and 2 indirect uses.

Abstract

This research was focused on investigating the types of conjunction used in NATO General Stoltenberg’s speech. To determine the types of conjunction the theory by Halliday and Hasan (1976) was employed. The research used qualitative method in analyzing the data. The speech used as a data source was NATO General Stoltenberg’s speech at 15 June about Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine. There are 67 conjunctions found in the speech which divided into 4 types. The additive conjunctions were the most type with 48 occurrences, followed by 14 Causal conjunctions, and 5 temporal conjunctions. The additive conjunction was not found in the speech. It can be conclude that the speech contains lots of information which unified into one single text.  It can be said that the NATO General wants to emphasize many things that NATO already doing and planned ahead regarding Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine.

Abstract

The main problems of this research were how to improve the speaking ability of EFL students converting grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, discourse, and strategies. therefore, how to encourage them to use English.  This research aimed to see whether the combination of British Parliamentary Debate and Peer Assessment may enhance the speaking ability of EFL students. A quasi-experimental method with non-equivalent group design was carried out in this research. The population was the third semester of English Department students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. Two classes from the population, representing the experimental class and the control class, were selected using the cluster random selection technique as the study's sample. This research used an interview test with a variety of themes as its instrument. Pre-test, treatment, and post-test were the three steps that made up the data collection processes. The data that obtained by the test were then submitted to a quantitative analysis. The research findings demonstrate that the experimental class students' speaking abilities were better to those of the control class. The data from the experimental class showed that the students' mean score was higher compared to the control class (59,68 > 49,06). In conclusion, the combination of British Parliamentary Debate and Peer Assessment was improved the students’ speaking ability.

Abstract

The research aimed to explore the students’ argumentative ability in their thesis introduction and to explore the most difficult moves for students in their thesis introduction. Students’ argumentative ability refers to the way students write their thesis introductions by following swales’ pattern (1990). Swales’ Pattern consist of three moves, establishing a research territory, establishing a niche, and occupying the niche.This research used a Descriptive Quantitative Method. The sample of this research were graduate students thesis from the Graduate Program of English Language Education at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar who completed their studies in 2021. The total sample was sixteen graduate students thesis. The procedure of this research was collected by analysing the students’ thesis introduction by using a rubric.The results of research found that 1) Students’ argumentative ability in the graduate thesis introductions was good which the students wrote their introduction by claiming the importance of the research (move 1 step 1), reviewing items of previous research (move 1 step 2), indicating a gap (move 2 step 2) and outlining the purposes (move 3 step 1). 2) The most difficult moves for students were move one step two (reviewing items of previous research), and move two step one (indicating a gap). It was identified based on the lowest score got by the students in each move. Therefore, it can be concluded that in writing thesis introductions, the students from Graduate Program of English Language Education at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar who completed their studies in 2021 followed Swales’ Pattern (1990).

Abstract

In this research, researchers make pronunciation and application the focus of research to improve students' ability to learn pronunciation. This research uses an experimental method with a quasi-experimental design. Participants in this study were divided into two groups, namely the control group and the experimental group. Based on the processing of data, improving the pronunciation ability of this cake game application has a positive impact on improving the ability of English pronunciation in students.
