Abstract

In college activities, there are many assignments related to English, both in the form of reading articles and assignments to make translations. In dealing with such assignments, students often depend on the use of GT (Google Translate). GT is one of the most popular MT (Machine Translation) because of its speed in translating and also because of the many languages that can be used as references both as source languages and target languages. GT can translate hundreds of source languages and hundreds of others into target languages in seconds. GT can also translate through photos. In addition to the speed and sophistication of GT, the accuracy of translation must be a special consideration. This study aims to reveal some errors made by GT in translating texts from Indonesian to English as the target language. The sentences translated amounted to 30 sentences taken randomly from various sources on the internet. The data collection method used was participatory observation and documentation. Direct observation was carried out by researchers being directly involved in the collection, especially in checking the translations made by GT. The data analysis method used was Categorization based on the theory of Error Analysis of MT. The results of this study are as follows. From 30 sentences as source data translated by GT, there were 13 GT errors or 43.3%. Of these errors, the most were errors in Incorrect Grammar and Structure as many as 6 errors or 20%. Furthermore, errors in Lexical Error as many as 4 errors or 13.3%. Furthermore, followed by Incoherence translation data which had 2 errors or 6.6% and the last was Extraneous translation as many as 1 error or 3.3%.

Abstract

This study examines negative politeness strategies in character dialogue, aiming to reveal how linguistic choices minimize face-threatening acts (FTAs) to maintain social harmony. Using Brown and Levinsons politeness theory, the analysis draws from a qualitative descriptive design, with data sourced from the movie Uglies and collected through observational, non-participatory methods, recorded via note-taking. A pragmatic identity method and equalizing technique were applied to analyze 216 instances of negative politeness, identifying “Question, Hedge” as the most frequent strategy (41 instances), reflecting a strong preference for indirectness to soften statements and avoid imposing on the listener. This was followed by “Be Pessimistic” and “Apologize” with 25 instances each, indicating that expressions of doubt and regret were also commonly used to mitigate imposition. Other strategies included “Minimize the Imposition” and “Give Deference” (24 instances each), “Be Conventionally Indirect” (20), “Go on Record as Incurring a Debt, or as Not Indebting” (18), “Impersonalize” and “State the FTA as a General Rule” (14 each), and “Nominalize” (11). The findings suggest a consistent preference for indirectness and deference to protect negative face, supporting respectful interactions and reinforcing social balance among characters.

Abstract

This study's objective is to determine the types of lexical cohesion employed in "Will Smith's Full Interview with Ellen" based on Haliday & Hasan (1976) lexical cohesion theory. This study employs a qualitative methodology that focuses on repetition, synonym, antonym, meronym, and hyponym types of lexical cohesion. Data were gathered by the researcher through observation and note-taking methods. The "Will Smith's Full Interview with Ellen" contains all the lexical cohesion types that were the subject of this investigation. The researcher discovered nine repetitions, three synonyms, two antonyms, and one hyponym. It follows that Repetition exhibits the highest level of lexical cohesion throughout "Will Smith's Full Interview with Ellen".” The speaker tends to repeat words, phrases, or sentences, which the researcher discovered from the data that has been evaluated.  The conclusion from the concept of lexical cohesion is that the use of lexically or semantically related words in a text has a positive impact on the connectedness, fluency, and clarity of communication. Lexical cohesion helps build strong connections between parts of the text, ensures a consistent flow of thought, and improves reader comprehension.
