Abstract

ICT has the potential to “bridge the knowledge gap” in terms of improving quality of education, increasing the quantity of quality educational opportunities, making knowledge building possible through borderless and boundless accessibility to resources and people, and reaching populations in remote areas to satisfy their basic right to education. This article presents on how to empower teacher in ELT through ICT. The fact that not all teacher of English in Indonesia are master in ICT, there are some teacher poor in ICT. Teachers’ computer literacy is 54.2%, teacher own internet literacy is 51.4%, teacher current typing skill is 51.4%. This article also present the advantages of ICT in ELT, they are: 1) keeping up with the world, 2) Bringing variety t your work, 3) breaking the routine, 4) getting new experience, 5) being creative and 6) meeting your learners. Empower teacher through ICT refers to a process that includes any communication device or application, which people become powerful enough to engage in, share control of, and influence events and institutions affecting their lives. Empowerment processes through ICT includes 1) teacher professional development such workplace training, seminar, professional meeting; 2) teacher technology management.

Abstract

Nowadays, teaching using Internet-Based Application becomes an engagement for English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher. Therefore in this research, the researchers are trying to incorporate two internet-based applications (Padlet and Wordwall) to teach English for Agriculture students to identify how these Internet-Based Applications are incorporated and how the students’ responses to the implementation of these. The sample of the research is 20 Agriculture study program students from the fifth semester. The instrument used to gather the data are observation and questionnaires. The questionnaires divided into two, the first is one dealing with the use of Padlet which consisted of 14 statements which divided into three indicators, they’re 1) the ease of use Padlet, 2) students’ understanding material on using Padlet, and 3) Padlet display. The second one is dealing with the use of Wordwall which consist of 6 statements. The result of this research reveals that Padlet was used by the lecturer in the teaching process. It was started by designing some teaching materials and sent it to the Padlet room and gave instruction to the students on what to do dealing with the teaching material. Brainstorming in the beginning and reflection at the end of each meeting were also implemented. Meanwhile Wordwall was used to assess students vocabulary by sending it’s link to Padlet room so the students could access it. Referring to the students’ response, they have very positive response on the use of Padlet as a learning media and Wordwall as formative assessment tool. In one case, it is evidently that students have different response on the use of Padlet with the reality happened during the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

The research intends to describe the use of diglossia among Javanese societies who are settling in Sukamaju Sub district North Luwu Regency.  Diglossia is formed as a functional of language variety which is used by communities in interaction among others. In a speech community, people may bilingual and multilinguals, thus one language usually has standard and non-standard language. Standardized language or High variety is generally used in formal situation while non-standard language mostly used in daily interaction or informal situation. The research was designed in descriptive qualitative method as it intends to describe how Javanese people choose the High variety and Low variety when communicating with their family and fellows based on the situation. The instrument of the research was observation to gather data related to language use that were spoken by Javanese people in daily interaction. Interview was used to gather information related to the use of diglossia of Javanese language among Javanese people. The informants were 40 Javanese people that  comprises 4 age groups; > 60 years old, 30-59 years old, 13-29 years old, and <12 years old. The research found there are still sustainable use of diglossia among Javanese societies who are living in Sukamaju Sub district, Noth Luwu Regency. The pattern of diglossia follows “bilingual with diglossia” because they are multilingual (Javanese language, local language “Tae language”, Indonesian language) and also use functionally the High and Low varieties of  Javanese language. The low variety are mostly used in all age groups in daily interaction. The <12 age group do not totally understand High variety, but they still use the Low variety of Javanese when communicating with friends and family.

Abstract

This research used descriptive quantitative method. It aimed at finding out and analyzing students’ interest on the use of mind mapping strategy to improve the students writing skill. To gain the data, the researchers used questionnaire with 10 statements. The researchers took second grade students of SMP Satap Pongsamelung and chose 10 students as participants. The data shows that they have good response towards the use of semantic mapping strategy such as: they were always interested, felt helpful and happy to learn English using this strategy particularly in improving their writing skill. Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that that most of the students were interested to improve their writing skill using semantic mapping strategy.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to produce teaching materials for Micro teaching subject based on Self Esteem to students of the English Education Study Program with dimensions of respect and self-respect, courage and ability in communication and confidence in one's own abilities. The elements in the module are tips and motivation, exercises/practices and summaries and formative tests in each chapter. The module was developed by taking into account the value of its validity, practicality and effectiveness. The approach used in the research is Research and Development research or development with the ADDIE development model. The trial was conducted on 5th semester students in the English Education study program, Palopo State Islamic Institute. The output in this research is a module for microteaching teaching and is published as an ISBN book by IKAPI member publishers.

Abstract

This study seeks to uncover the perceptions of EFL students on English tenses mastery and their belief that English tenses mastery ensures better improvement in academic writing. The research was engaged in a mixed method. The quantitative descriptive method was utilized to study the students’ perceptions on English tenses mastery to improve their English academic writing in numerical form and percentage. The qualitative method was focused on the reasons for the students’ low competence and their belief that English tenses mastery can lead to the quality of writing. The data collection used Google form in multiple-choice and short answer forms. A total of 59 EFL students of the English Department of Universitas HKBP Nommensen who took the Academic Writing course participated in this research. The results show that: (1) most of the EFL students were familiar with all the names of the English tenses with a total of 62.7% (37 out of 59 respondents); (2) the most number of students (54.2 respondents) can employ some of the tenses in writing; (3) The main reason for the EFL students is unable to apply English grammar, particularly English tenses in writing practice was due to the lack of students’ English grammatical competence; (4) around 88.1% of the respondents (52 students) believed that mastering English tenses was the key to improve their writing skill. Accordingly, the teachers need to provide an effective method to advance the students’ competence in the use of the English tense in writing. For the researchers, the research findings provide basic evidence to investigate the issues in the future.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the improvement of students' pronunciation skills (Supra-segmental) in English using the ELSA Speak application and to determine student perceptions of the use of the ELSA Speak application. The location of this research is at the University of West Sulawesi. The approach used in this research is quantitative. The methodology used in this study is the One Group Pre-experimental design. The population in this study was class D class 2021 majoring in English at the University of West Sulawesi. The sampling method used in this study is a simple random sampling method. The research sample used was 20 people. The research data was collected through a pronunciation test given to students using pre-test and post-test as well as distributing perception questionnaires to students. The data in this studywere analyzed using non-parametric analysis in the form of a T-test through SPSS. The students' pre-test means the score is 52.30 while the post-test mean score is 65.60. while the results of the T-test showed that sig. (2-tailed = 0.000) <0.05. That means the ELSA Speak application can significantly improve students' pronunciation skills in English. The results of the perception questionnaire are 82% which is included in the good category. This means that students respond well to the use of the ELSA Speak application.

Abstract

This research aims to enhance students' vocabulary mastery through Hello English smartphone application. This research applied experimental with one group pre-test post-test design. The population was the students of SMA Muhammadiyah Palopo that consist of five classes. Then, the sample taken were 25 students of class X by using cluster sampling technique. Based on the data analysis, it can be seen that the mean score of the pretest was 52,52 while the mean score of the posttest was 80,64. Furthermore, the significant value of paired sample test was smaller than the significant level (0,000 < 0,05). It means that the H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. In conclusion, Hello English smartphone application significantly enhanced the students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study aims to improve stduents’ speaking skill using hello English application. The subjects of this study were the fifth-grade students of SDN Sidorejo 1 Mojokerto. The researcher used classroom action research to conduct this study. The research instruments were an observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, test, and documentation. This study was done in two cycles. The researcher procedures of this research consisted of four steps. They are planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The criteria of success were 75% of students got a score of 9.From the findings and discussion, the result is Hello English application can improve students’ speaking skills. It can be seen in the test of cycle 2. In cycle 2, the result of students’ speaking scores showed that 15 students passed and 2 of the students were failed. The mean scores of the test in cycle 2 were 9,05 and the percentage of improvement 88,23%. It is showed that in cycle 2, the students' scores passed the criterion of success 75%. Thus, based on the result of cycle 2 Hello English application can improve students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

The study was aimed at investigating the levels of scientific writing anxiety and describing the students’ perceptions of the causes of scientific writing anxiety. This research used mixed-method with explanatory sequential as a research design. The students in fifth-semester of English Education IAIN Palangka Raya from 4 classes were involved as the subject of the research. The data was obtained by distributing 51 closed-ended questionnaires and by interviewing 6 participants. The result showed the majority level of writing anxiety is high level with 34 of 51 students or 70.5% students that experienced high level of writing anxiety. In addition, the result also revealed that time constraints, language difficulties, a lack of experience or insufficient writing practice, fear of failure, received negative evaluation from the teacher and classmates were the most significant factors causing students to feel anxious when writing scientific papers.
