Abstract

Extensive studies identify plagiarism as a grave problem in Indonesian university students’ academic writing (Adiningrum, 2015; Sulaiman, 2015; Zalnur, 2012).Plagiarism is the most severe problem found in students’ theses in the context investigated in this study (Tangkelangi & Widyasari, 2015).However, no study explicitly examines the extent that students understand plagiarism, including both its concept and its practices in the focused context. Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap by investigating students’ understanding of plagiarism. Considering the results of previous studies related to the potential factors involved in students’ understanding of plagiarism, this study also aims to determine whether gender and academic achievement are considerable factors in students’ plagiarism understanding in the focused context. To investigate these issues, survey research using an adapted questionnaire was conducted to gather data from seventy participants out of a total population of eighty-five students, who voluntarily participated in this study. The participants were third-year students majoring in English Education who will take a unit discussing plagiarism issues in the next semester. The data gathered from the participants was analysed using the Rasch model to determine the students’ understanding of plagiarism. Then, a t-test of two independent samples was used to examine whether the students’ understanding differed between gender and a Pearson’s rtest was used to examine whether academic achievement correlated with their plagiarism understanding. The results of the analyses revealed that the students had a basic understanding of plagiarism and their understanding did not differ between gender or with academic achievement. These findings imply that several plagiarism principles need to be explored more, including unattributed paraphrasing, self-plagiarism and citations and referencing. It is also implied that special treatment for a particular gender or a certain academic achiever is not necessary.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the ambition of Erin Gruwell, the main figure in the film Freedom Writers (2007). Personology theory by Henry Murray was used to investigate the ambition values contained in Erin Gruwell's character. The researcher used qualitative descriptive research, from which the primary data sources were selected from the script of the Freedom Writers (2007) movie, and the secondary data sources were selected from other sources related to previous research, websites, ebooks, and other articles. The results of this study can be classified into three. Firstly, Murray's theory about personology, showed that Erin’s id came from Erin when she had a motivation for being a teacher. Erin’s ego brought her to do something to realize her ambition, and Erin’s superego continued to struggle for her goals. Secondly, the type of ambition needs depicted in the main character is psychogenic needs or secondary needs that contain achievement, recognition, and exhibition. Thirdly, ambition brought the main character in a positive direction and had an impact on herself as well as on her surroundings

Abstract

The feedbacks given by teacher is the important role in monitoring learners during the learning process. Teacher serves feedbacks in various ways, can be correction, praise, suggestion, and so on. By receiving feedbacks, learners are able to realize their errors and they feel motivated to develop and improve their performance. However, not all learners have the same characteristics in accepting the feedbacks well. Some of learners may feel insecure during or after getting feedbacks. Therefore, this study explores learners’ perceptions for teacher’s feedback of their oral performances, whether they feel motivated or feel the other way. The questionnaires were the main tool to gain the information from the learners, and followed by the interview from some learners to get the further and detail explanation. The result shows that most of learners feel motivated from the teacher’s feedbacks, and they have intention to perform better because they understand their errors. However, there are some other aspects that decrease their motivation by the way teacher delivers the feedbacks.
