Abstract

Language is one of the important things to communicate with others. People use language to show their emotions. There are five different language styles, frozen style, formal style, consultative style, casual style, and intimate style, which people can use to interact with others. People with different social cultures, ages, statuses, and gender might use different language styles. This study investigates James Cordon’s different language style while interviewing his guest stars, James Lee Curtis, Dwayne Johnson, and Ed Sheeran, on The Late Late Show. The study results show that James Corden used three different language styles: formal, casual, and consultative. As Jamie is older than James, he prefers to use formal language during the show. However, while interviewing Dwayne and Ed Sheeran, who are younger than James, he used different language styles, casual and consultative. The results of the study indicate that the age of the addressee considers the language style preference.

Abstract

This study was aimed to see the Influence of EGRA technique on students’ Grammar Mastery at the eighth grade students of MTs Istiqlal Delitua. The objective of this study is to get the empirical data of the differences between students` score grammar test that were taught by using EGRA technique and the students were not. The population of this study consists of 126 students. The sampling process of this research is cluster random sampling technique. The researcher took two classes, VIII D as experimental class consisted of 32 students and VIII C as control class consisted of 31 students. The design of this study is a quantitative method using quasi-experimental design (non-equivalent control group) with two group classes, namely experimental class and control class. The data was collected through pretest and posttest. It aimed to know whether the EGRA technique in teaching grammar can improve students` grammar mastery. The research findings demonstrate that the t-test value is 10.83, which is significantly higher than the t-table value of 1.670 (3.925 > 1.670). This signifies that the use of the EGRA technique is effective in enhancing students' grammar mastery among the eighth-grade students of MTs Istiqlal Delitua. Consequently, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, while the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected.

Abstract

This research adopted conversational analysis to investigate the turn-taking strategies, how the strategies were applied, and the dominant strategy. The researchers used Jamie Miller’s interview with Zach Sang show as the data source. Observing the data source and typing the conversations were done to collect data. The collected data were further analyzed by using referential identity method and referential competence- in equalizing technique. All processes of this research were in accordance with the characteristics of descriptive qualitative research. The theory invented by Stenstrom (1994) was used to analyze data and Jefferson (2004)’s transcription symbols theory was implemented to transcribe the conversations. The results exposed that 78 utterances referred to turn-taking strategies and 11 strategies were employed. The data involved eight data of hesitant start and uptakes, seven data of clean start and uptakes, one data of alerts and giving up, nine data of filled pause and/or verbal fillers, 13 data of lexical repetition, 12 data of prompting, and three data of appealing. From the total data, lexical repetition was found as the dominant strategy. The participants mostly repeated the same lexical items to manage the conversation flow and avoid the speech gap.
