Abstract

This paper examines the linguistic meaning of language in memes and jokes on the internet, focusing on the dynamic nature of online platforms like Reddit. It aims to understand the language distinctions underlying humor found in these platforms, which often defy accepted linguistic conventions. Implicit meaning, derived from the verb "to imply," refers to something that a speech implies but does not state outright. In conversational encounters, the idea of cooperation between speakers is inextricably linked to the understanding of implicature. The paper highlights the importance of understanding the linguistic features of jokes and memes on the internet, as they become a breeding ground for linguistic innovation. The meaning of a sentence can be divided into conventional meaning, conversational implicatures, and conventional implicatures. Internet memes and jokes, often used for propaganda, satire, and defamation, can contain implicatures. The study examined internet-published memes and jokes involving implicatures and aimed to identify other joke styles and implicatures. Gender-related implicatures are common in jokes, with conventional implicature being the most common. Examples include jokes about women, cultural basic jokes, and social phenomena. The analysis of implicatures in jokes involves evaluating extrinsic linguistic factors, including social and cultural dimensions, and the influence of context on the inferred meaning. Overall, the interpretation of internet memes and jokes is influenced by their linguistic features.

Abstract

The process of learning a foreign language as a second language, all learners will face the process of creating an interlanguage. Selinker's hypothesis (1972) says that interlanguage is different from the mother tongue and from the target language (which is being learned). If the pragmatic study is connected with the interlanguage system, it will later become a study of how speakers and non-native speakers acquire, understand, and use linguistic patterns or speech acts in a second language. Selinker (1972) classifies problems in interlanguage, one of which is a methodological problem in which one type of empirical research suggests error analysis. Error analysis or abbreviated children is a limited instrument in the investigation of second language acquisition (PB2). Burt, Dulay, or Krashen (1982) differentiate areas (taxonomies) for language errors. The first is a taxonomy of linguistic categories which classifies errors based on the components of language, namely phonology (speech), syntax and morphology (grammar; grammar), semantics and lexicon of meaning, and discourse (style). This study describes the interlanguage problem which is included in the "taxonomy of linguistic categories" that occurs in the speech process of teaching Indonesian at bilingual schools, namely Canggu Community School and Green School Bali.

Abstract

The thoughts and the way psychopaths deliver their speech are definitely dissimilar to normal person. There are specific techniques they used in their verbal speech. This study analyzes the semantic techniques in the utterances of psychopaths during interviews on their experience. The method of the study is descriptive qualitative research. The data were in the form of utterances of the seven psychopaths and serial killers in The Fear Files channel. There were thirteen data in the form of utterances that contained with semantic techniques used by the psychopaths and serial killers in the interviews. The data were classified using Timor and Weiss framework in analyzing the semantic techniques. The results show the semantic techniques covering vocabulary, figurative language, positive and negative connotation, anaphora and repetition. The most category used by the subjects is repetition followed by anaphora and vocabulary. The least used are positive and negative connotation and figurative language. Each of the psychopath represents the characteristics such as the expression of irresponsibility, compulsive lying, expression of impulsive behavior, manipulative speech, lack of empathy, poor behavior control.

Abstract

Fighting fascism was shown by Charlie Chaplin in his speech in The Great Dictator film. Thus, this research aimed to reveal Chaplin's Point of View, attitudes, and judgments toward people through mood and modality analysis in his speech. The-descriptive qualitative method and Hallidayan SFL theory were used to analyze the speech. The findings revealed that Chaplin used 81% declarative and 19% imperative from 54 clauses. Chaplin did not use interrogatives in the speech to encourage people to fight fascism. Furthermore, the researchers found that Chaplin mostly used 92% modalization probability to describe a wonderful future if the dictator loses. Furthermore, Chaplin used an 8% modulation obligation to depict an action that Chaplin should take. Based on the data, it could be interpreted that Chaplin's position was higher than the audiences. He viewed his audience as being weak. Chaplin calls on the soldiers to stop being the slaves of dictators and refuse to listen to their orders. This study from the speech could provide information for people interested in mood and modality and the meaning of the speech related to the Russia-Ukraine war.

Abstract

As part of the preparation of a critical edition of the Epistle to the Galatians in its Ge’ez version one needs to examine various manuscripts. Exploring 16 Ge’ez manuscripts the author has collated all types of variants and come up with the hypothesis of three different groups of Ethiopian manuscripts as far as the Epistle to the Galatians is concerned. Just as some variants like Galatians 6:14 help to identify groups of manuscripts, the majority of variants are not caused by scribal dependence on earlier manuscripts. In other words, the innovations and errors are polygenetic, namely the fruit of independent scribal activities. This article presents such variants, classified according to transposition, banalization, incongruity of grammatical number, omission of letters, polar errors, and metathesis.

Abstract

The translation process does not only deal with language structure and semantic meaning, but it is also highly influenced by social and cultural meaning. Furthermore, besides transferring the meaning from SL to TL, translation also attempts to carry over the message contained in SL texts to the TL texts with readable and acceptable consideration. This research aims to reveal the translation procedures applied in the French-Indonesian novel, Madame Bovary, especially in translating culture-specific terms. The data were taken from the French novel Madame Bovary written by Gustave Flaubert in 1972 and its translation version written by Santi Hendrawati in 2010. Borrowing with calque and transference, literal translation, cultural equivalent, addition, omission, generalization, descriptive equivalent, naturalization, transposition, and modulation are the translation procedures used by the translator. Different languages with different cultures potentially lead the translator to face some crucial problems in translating texts. One of the best ways to solve that problem is by using appropriate translation procedures.

Abstract

The exploration of literature transcends the boundaries of written texts, encompassing a diverse array of expressions, including spoken or sung compositions like song lyrics. While on the surface, songs may seem to convey straightforward messages, beneath it lies a labyrinth of symbols and nuances that beckon listeners to interpret. This interpretive process demands a nuanced understanding and a willingness to explore the depths of lyrical expression. This research aims to unravel the significance of each letter in the word "RHODESIA" and to unravel the intricate composition of the portmanteau "Rhodesian" within the lyrics of John Edmond's ‘The Last Word in Rhodesian’ song using Ferdinand de Saussure's dyadic model of semiosis and employing qualitative research methodology with historical approach. Through meticulous analysis, the findings reveal the profound symbolism interwoven within the lyrics, which serves to encapsulate the historical essence of Rhodesia. The songwriter adeptly utilizes the arrangement of each letter in the word "RHODESIA" to encapsulate phrases emblematic of the Rhodesian Bush War and alluding to the names of significant Rhodesian figures; Rhodes and Ian, symbolically forming the word “Rhodesian”. In doing so, the song becomes a poignant tribute to the complex tapestry of Rhodesian history.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to (1) To find out the types of conversational implicatures (2) to describe how the implicature exist (to find out the types of non-observance maxim of cooperative principle) and (3) To find the purpose of generate implicature. This research was descriptive qualitative. The data of this research were the dialog in BBC News Indonesia’s Interview with Joko Widodo. The researcher obtained the data by note-taking technique. First, the researcher watched the video interview and make the transcript from the dialogues. Then, the researcher re-read the transcribed dialogues and classified the data according to theory of implicature and non-observance maxim of cooperative principle by Grice. In the data analysis the researcher applied qualitative data method by Miles and Huberman (2014). The results of the research found there were 16 particular implicatures identified out of 18 of data in the dialogue, while the other 2 were general implicatures. Additionally, the researcher identified a lot of disregarded maxim forms. The most frequently disregarded maxim was the flouting of the maxim of quantity. Based on the research findings, it was observed that Joko Widodo often commits violations of the maxim of quantity in order to provide additional information or to strengthen his arguments.

Abstract

As the world becomes more borderless, it is hard to find any country that remains homogeneous. Japan, which is well-known as a homogeneous and monolingual country, also has diversity in their language phenomenon. This study uses a qualitative research approach, because the direction of this research is to examine language phenomena that occur in Japanese society as the subject and source of this research. Even within Japanese people there is sign language that is used by the Japanese Deaf or hearing people who sign fluently. The Japanese sign language (nihon shuwa) has its own system different from the Japanese language. The presence and increasing recognition of sign language has created awareness of heterogeneity and diversity in culture in Japan.

Abstract

This study aims to explore politeness maxims in teachers’ request in English Foreign Language instructional context (Henceforth: EFL). The research method was qualitative which utilized the data from the teachers’ utterances during instructional process at the Eleventh-grade students of high schools in Manggarai region, East Nusa Tenggara Province. A non-participant observation and a field-note taking were the methods of data collection, which utitilized audio-video recording and note-taking techniques. The instruments are digital audio-video recorder, field-note, and observation sheet. The data were qualitatively analyzed through three steps; data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusion/verification. The data were futher interpreted based on politenes theory and politeness maxims. The results of data analysis show that politeness maxims were applied in teachers’ requests: tact, generosity, approbation, and modesty. Tact and approbation were mostly applied in teachers’requests. The types of politeness maxims were explicitly marked by pragmatic modifiers. They serve to modify and enact polite requests in classroom interaction. Based on the findings, a further investigation is prominent to be conducted in studying other related variables in EFL classroom context.
