Abstract

ABSTRACTStudy on foliar anatomic structure of tropical plants are useful to study various aspects of plant life related to photosynthetic, productivity, carbon sequestration, adaptation to environmental stresses as the results of global climate change, etc. This study was conducted to investigate foliar anatomic structure of ten tropical woody plant species including Barringtonia asiatica, Dracontomelon dao, Heritiera littoralis, Diospyros discolor, Calophyllum inophyllum, Antidesma bunius, Schleichera oleosa, Syzygium cumini, Madhuca longifolia dan Adenanthera pavonina; also to discuss its implication to ecophysiological adaptation to tropical dry climate. The results showed that ten woody plant species studied had variation of adaptation pattern to dry tropical climate, exposure to high light intensity or open shade and photosynthesis activity. Plant species in Group II (Antidesma bunius, Madhuca longifolia and Adenanthera pavonina) has relatively higher adaptation compared to Group I (Diospyros discolor, Calophylum inophyllum, Dracontomelon dao, Schleichera oleosa, Heritiera littoralis, Baringtonia asiatica and Syzygium cumini). Some foliar anatomic structures including palisade shape and size, stomatal index, stomatal density, spongy mesophyll thickness, the ratio of P/T and P/S are important characters that can be used as indicator of changes in environmental factors; particularly the density of stomata as indicators of climate change in dry tropic area. Keywords: adaptation, dry climate, eco-physiology, foliar anatomy, woody plant

Abstract

ABSTRACTStudy of Reproduction Aspects of Endemic Fish Bonti-bonti (Paratherina striata)in Lake Towuti, South Sulawesi. Bonti-bonti, is one of endemic fishes in Lake Towuti andLake Mahalona. Bonti-bonti has been utilized by people around the lake for consumption inthe form of 6esh fish, dry fish, and salty fish; as ornamental fish; and as raw material foranimal feed. It should be protected from decreasing of fish population due to increasingexploitation and habitat quality changes. The objective of this research is to know thereproduction aspects of this endemic fish, as basic data for conservation. This research wasconducted in Lake Towuti, South Sulawesi from May 2006 to April 2007 at five stations.Samples were collected using experimental gillnet sized 0.625, 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25 inches. The result shows that testis and ovary was found each in one organ during a period of gonadadevelopment. Gonada maturity, was observed histologically oscured at five maturity stages. The range of egg diameters were from 0.01 to 1.50 mm. The fust gonada maturity period ofmale and female fish were reached at 5.53 and 6.26 cm of total length, respectively. Male andfemale fish gonada maturity (50%) were at 16.78 and 14.61 cm total length, respectively.Gonada maturity index value of male and female were 0.01-3.96% and 0.02-6.77%. Thereproduction ability is related to fecundity which have an effect on number ofjuveniles. Therange of fish fecundity were 818-6,051, which were devided kom female with 11.30-18.33cm total length. Bonti-bonti fish is partial spawner type.Key words : Reproduction aspects, endemic fish, Paratherina striata, and Lake Towuti

Abstract

ABSTRACTProtein  is  one  of  the  important  aspects  in  animal  feed  to fulfill basic needs and stimulate reproduction behaviors. The aims of this research were to determine food preferences and observe digestibility of protein in rainbow lorikeet. This research consisted of two experiments, which were 1 week of preliminary study and 4 weeks for data collection. Studies were carried out using two 4-month-aged rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus haematodus). The birds were kept individually in metabolism cage (86 x 42 x 53 cm) and  treated with 5 different protein sources consisting quail’s egg (A), soybean meal (B), koi fish pellet (C), milk 7% (D), and milk 13% (E). The diets were then offered to the birds ad libitum in the form of mashes, and sweet corn served separately. Variables observed include dry matter consumption, apparent metabolizable energy  value,  and  apparent  digestibility  of protein  value.  Feed  intake  of  soybean meal  mashes  was  higher  than  the  others.  From the calculation, AME of milk 7%  mashes was the highest (49.27 cal/g), and AME of soybean meal  mashes was the lowest (38.07 cal/g). ADP of soybean meal mashes was highest (87.88 %) compared to the others. Keywords: rainbow lorikeet, apparent metabolizable energy, apparent digestibility protein

Abstract

ABSTRACTMonascus sp. MM was a contaminant fungus isolated from museum specimenpreserved with ethanol 70 %. In order to verify role of superoxide dismutase (SOD) inprotecting cell from ethanol toxicity during ethanol metabolism, SOD activities of Monascussp.MM and a Monmcus sp. NGK, which was isolated fiom fermented red rice (angkak), werecompared. When fungus was grown with glucose, CuIZn-SOD activity of Monascus sp., MMwas 7.1 times of thht of Monascus sp. NGK. Whereas in ethanol medium, CuIZn-SOD activityof Monarcus sp. MM was 24.6 times of that in Monascus sp. NGK. Induction of CuIZn-SODMonmcus sp. MM by ethanol was not observed. Compared with Mn-SOD, activity of CuIZn-SOD was markedly important (I 0 times of Mn-SOD when fungi grown with ethanol; 12 timeswhen the fungi grown with glucose). The data indicated that Cu/Zn-SOD might play animportant role in protecting cell fiom ethanol toxicity during ethanol metabolism. Ethanolrespiration rate of Monascus sp. MM was also important since O2 consumption and ethanoldegradation rates were clearly higher than that of Monascus sp. NGK.Keywords: Monarcw sp., superoxide dismutase, respiration, ethanol resistance.
