Abstract

A good literary work is certainly timeless. When tsunami struck Japan, two poems and a song were continuously broadcasted on the television. The poems: Ame ni mo Makezu and Kodamadeshouka and the song: Ue o Muite Arukō were written long before the disaster. These works were able to motivate the Japanese people to unite and bounce back in facing the disaster. The author uses a liberal-humanist approach and literary sociology in analyzing the three factors. Based on the results, it is known that through liberal humanism the three literary works are indeed a good literary work since they have eternal significance. The repeated words are an emphasis that the Japanese people would not give up. While literary sociology reveals that when they were first written, these three works also served as a source of motivation to the people who were in the midsts of troubles. Since they were first written until today, especially when the tsunami struct, these three works continuously exist to motivate the Japanese people. This paper aims to examine the metamorphosis of kidung from the ritual realm to the digital domain which is the basis of today's electronic mass media. Data were collected with ethnographic method and interviews with enthusiasts and audiences of kidung as well as with managing of electronic mass media. Recording method was used to record the interactive kidung programme in Radio and TV. The data were examined by transformation media and globalization theory. The study began with a description of the metamorphosis of kidung from the ritual realm to digital, enthusiasts and audiences, as well as the future of the kidung cultural heritage in the digital era. The result shows that the transformation of kidung from the ritual to the digital domain is a revitalization process that makes this tradition increasingly lively, not vanishing as it has been feared. In addition, the tradition of the kidung which was originally dominated by the older generation, has also been able to attract younger generation who present it through digital-based social media such as Facebook and YouTube so that it can be enjoyed by Balinese diaspora.

Abstract

This article analyses the elements of general knowledge in the folklores of Balinese Bali Aga and in the elementary school-text books of the Dutch colonial period. The analyses focuses on how narrative texts which usually consider as fiction and contain unreal information are also expressing general knowledge and social and cultural facts. The object of this study are selected folktales of Bali Aga published in book form in 1987 and expositional text and short stories included the school text books published in the 1910s. Of the two books, 10 texts were chosen for discussion. Data were analysed with rhetoric and content analysis theories that give attention to the content instead of structure of texts. This article concludes that folklore, short story, and other forms of fictional genre are rich in general knowledge on social and cultural life and description on factual matters similar to expositional text genre. Thus, like expositional texts genre, narrative texts have the ability to tell stories and also to convey varieties of general knowledge related to the society that owned the stories.
