Abstract

Teachers’ writing assessment practice in foreign language learning classroom is the issue that has not been investigated empirically and rigorously. Bearing this fact in mind, this study looks at how teachers gauge students’ conceptual understanding and ability to perform task. To this end, four English teachers who had the experience of writing instruction and assessment in their classroom were interviewed, and twenty students were also cross-examined to ensure the trustworthiness. The data analysis reveals that the teachers’ assessment practice does not meet the expectations and the standards. The students involved, moreover, specified that the teachers only showed them the score without giving a further explanation on their strengths and weaknesses, and they never indicated which part the students have gone wrong in their written work. Therefore, the results suggest the stakeholder to give the teachers professional development by training them with the fundamental knowledge base for carrying out valid assessment in any context. Keywords: evaluation, teacher’s assessment, writing

Abstract

The complexity of advertisements meanings realized by selected images and words always leads to multiple interpretations. This study attempts to examine the meaning representation in the Korean skincare advertisements intended for males. This study follows Kress and van Leeuwen’s (1996; 2006) systemic functional approach to multimodal discourse analysis to reveal the representational meanings from the advertisements. The data sources were three Korean skincare advertisements namely “UL.OS”, “Dandyguy”, and “Power Perfection BB Cream” selected to instantiate how verbal and visual data deliver representational meanings. Following SFL -Multimodal discourse analysis, this study focused on identifying ideational meanings of the intermodal relations in terms of their representation, interaction, and composition.  The findings showed that the intermodal relations of the Korean male skincare advertisements relied on the meanings conveyed by the elected images. The images presented a typical masculinity showing the Korean cultural identities. The meanings were complemented through the choices of verbal, material, and circumstance. This study suggests that the advertisements represent cultural identity being constructed by the choice of visual images.

Abstract

The new educational policy in Indonesia does not require English as a compulsory subject in primary school. To respond to the current policy, some primary schools, especially Islamic affiliated primary schools still have a commitment to provide English lessons as an extracurricular subject. Since there is no regulation toward the teaching and learning process, implementing Content-Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach into teaching materials aims to improve the learning process. This study used ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model to design the CLIL materials and reached the third stage. The results highlight that after conducting a need analysis, the syllabus and the students’ activity book consists of three selected topics that integrate Islamic values into CLIL model. They were Caring for Living Things, My Heroes, and My Dream Job. Those topics were adapted from a thematic book applied in the school partner under the Curriculum 2013. These topics were designed into three main subjects i.e., Science, Islamic Content, and Arts. Furthermore, before each topic, vocabulary-based activities were presented followed by three kinds of activities. Islamic values are integrated into CLIL materials to promote Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) also to advocate local wisdom-based curriculum, particularly infusing the Muslim cultures and values. This study concludes that there is a need to integrate Islamic content to English materials in Islamic primary affiliated schools.

This study aims to delineate the ECC of Pangandaran tour guides in Pangandaran, Indonesia. The data were collected through a focus group discussion consisting of six participants from miscellaneous institutions and were analyzed through Thematic Analysis (Braun and Clarke, 2006). The findings demonstrated that Pangandaran tour guides' ECC were outlined in five descriptions, namely (1) committing recursive grammatical errors while speaking in English, (2) designating insufficient spoken English vocabulary, (3) possessing vast and in-depth prior knowledge about Pangandaran, (4) diagnosing problems and proposing their various solutions and (5) showcasing visionary thoughts towards tourism destination development. Given these facts, ECC enables the tour guides to create sustainable job and business opportunities for themselves, the local people, and the government. Keywords: Communicative competence; English; Indonesian tourism; Pangandaran tour guides
