Abstract

This study aims at exploring the lectures’ way to develop EFL materials; strategies for developing EFL materials; and challenges in developing ELT Material. This study was conducted in English Education Department of three different universities namely STKIP Paracendekia Sumbawa, Makassar State University, and Halu Oleo University. In collecting the data, the researchers used narrative case study design. The instrument of this study was the researchers themselves. The result showed that firstly the lecturers who developed English material only implemented some steps in developing teaching material such exploring students’ need, contextualizing material, and use the material in teaching and learning process. In this case, the material developer disregarded some other steps such as material trials in small group and evaluation of teaching material. Secondly, the strategies used by the lecturers in developing teaching material is by using analysis, Imitation, and modification, determining the aim of developing teaching material, knowing the number of students and time duration is available, and team teaching. Lastly, in developing teaching materials, the lecturer found some challenges such as difficulties of finding text and sources based on local wisdom, appropriated material, changeable lesson plan, and cost and time

Abstract

Permasalahan prioritas mitra adalah bagaimana mendesain sebuah media pembelajaran daring yang mampu: digunakan oleh dosen dan mahasiswa dengan mudah; meningkatkan kreativitas dosen dan mahasiswa; dan meningkatkan kesadaran dosen akan pentingnya penggunaan teknologi. Tujuan program ini adalah untuk mengadakan pelatihan pembuatan video pembelajaran menggunakan aplikasi kinemaster dan screencast o matic selama pandemic Covid-19. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan yaitu pemberian pelatihan dan pendampingan, penyadaran/ peningkatan kemampuan dosen. Keberlanjutan program setelah program ini selesai sepenuhnya dikembalikan kepada dosen yang mengikuti pelatihan untuk melanjutkan implementasi aplikasi pembelajaran ini. Terlihat bahwa ada hasil positif dalam hal peningkatan daya saing dan tata nilai dalam bidang pendidikan pada binaan mitra. Peningkatan kemampuan para dosen muda dalam menggunakan teknologi dan informasi dalam kesehariannya untuk mengajar Hal ini bisa dibuktikan dengan setelah pemaparan materi, peserta diberikan kesempatan untuk praktik membuat video pembelajaran secara berkelompok dan individu dengan menggunakan aplikasi kinemaster dan screencast o matic. Terlihat peserta sangat antusias mengikuti pelatihan ini. Hal ini disebabkan karena kedua aplikasi ini baru mereka gunakan untuk pembuatan video pembelajaran. 70,6% mereka beranggapan puas terhadap kegiatan ini. Peserta mengharapkan ada kegiatan pelatihan kembali.

Abstract

This research aimed at knowing the students' perception of Microsoft Office 365 on learning history. This research used a quantitative descriptive design. It was conducted at SMAN 4 Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi. The sample of this study was students in XI-1 grade. The students were 46. Research instruments used questionnaires and interviews. The result showed that the students had a positive response toward the use of Microsoft Office 365. Besides, 87% of students agree that they can understand History Subject during online learning. The most frequently used features were Teams (95.7%), SharePoint (2.2%), and Forms (2.2%). THowever, the obstacle of using this application is if students do not have facilities such as a good internet network, and laptops.

Abstract

She received her Ph.D. from BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus, in 2017. Her observations on college students’ endeavors to pen down their ideas led her to choose Scaffolding Writing Skills for Indian College Students as her doctoral research topic. The work has contributed to understanding the importance of learning management systems to maximally impact classroom instruction of writing skills through a learner-centric, collaborative approach. After being awarded the institutional fellowship in 2011, She taught courses like Technical Communication, Technical Report Writing, and Effective Public Speaking at BITS Pilani to UG and PG students. Before this, She did M. Phil. in English Literature from MGS University, Bikaner, in 2009 and wrote a dissertation on the works of V S Naipaul from a Postcolonial perspective. She qualified for UGC NET (English - Language and Literature) in 2012. While doing a short-term course with RELO, US Embassy, in 2012, She was awarded Outstanding Achievement in Exploring Web 2.0: Tools for classroom teaching and professional development. During her Master (in English Literature), She received Prof. SBL Rawat Memorial Trust Award for achieving the second rank at the University level. She also wrote a dissertation on comparative analysis of G B Shaw’s Caesar and Cleopatra and William Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra in MA. Her research areas are Teaching of Writing Skills in Language Classrooms at Tertiary Level, Online Collaborative Language Learning, literary theories, and Contemporary Drama. She has also served as the co-convenor of Departmental seminars in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, BITS Pilani in 2013-14. She was a member of the editorial committee of BITS CAN- a biannual BITS Pilani magazine, and the organizing committee for the International Conference Interfacing Language, Culture and Technology.

Abstract

Although business English books have been extensively published during the last two decades (Bhatia & Bremner, 2012; Emmerson, 2010; Sweeney, 2003; Talbot, 2009), this book, "English for Business Communication" by Mable Chan (2020), is a comprehensive textbook designed for students and professionals studying English for business or workplace communication. It covers both spoken and written English and incorporates up-to-date research in business communication. The book focuses on the realities of communication in the business world today, including the use of English in social media and the concept of communicative competence. It also includes analysis of email communication, informal English, and English for socialization. Additionally, the book explores persuasive messages and provides an e-resources website with authentic workplace genres and relevant research studies.

Abstract

The goal of the study was to get a deeper understanding of how technology-enhanced language learning is utilized to teach and learn languages in higher education. This review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations. The review begins with a description of the identification process. The best articles published between 2000 and 2022 have been selected to demonstrate how to compare significant aspects and valuable strategies. These articles were selected in accordance with EFL and ESL students. The results are organized into three categories, with the following topics occurring most frequently in the reviewed publications. Researchers may apply task-based learning, communicative, flipped classroom, and other instructional strategies. The second section deals with research instruments. The questionnaire, interview, test, forum group discussion, and observation were utilized to collect data. In conclusion, researchers have compiled a list of publications to be analyzed based on their most current research queries.

Abstract

This study investigates lecturers' perceptions of metacognitive scaffolding in writing instruction at Universitas Halu Oleo. Utilizing a qualitative exploratory case study design, data were collected through interviews with three lecturers from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. Thematic analysis revealed that while lecturers acknowledge the benefits of metacognitive scaffolding for developing independent writers, they encounter obstacles such as large class sizes, time constraints, and varied student engagement. The study aimed to provide insights for improving writing instruction practices and policy development. Lecturers discovered that metacognitive scaffolding is essential for helping students develop writing performances and engagement. The study’s findings align with literature emphasizing the importance of metacognitive strategies and structured feedback in writing instruction. The integration of technology and the positive impact of lecturers' personalities further support the effectiveness of metacognitive scaffolding in enhancing students' writing performance and engagement. Lecturers perceive the implementation of metacognitive scaffolding in writing courses as crucial for improving students' writing performance and fostering independent, reflective learning, although they acknowledge challenges such as students' difficulties with coherence and vocabulary and the distractions of technology.

Abstract

This study investigates digital language teacher professional development (TPD) within online communities in Indonesia and Vietnam, employing Pinar’s currere framework to identify optimal practices. Through qualitative methods, including interviews and observations, this study examined the experiences of English language educators navigating digital education in these countries. The findings indicate that, while both nations emphasize the significance of digital literacy, educators encounter challenges in acquiring essential digital competencies due to limited resources and infrastructure. Online communities of practice (CoPs) function as valuable platforms for knowledge dissemination, peer support, and professional growth, enabling teachers to enhance their digital proficiency. However, issues such as internet accessibility, time constraints, and language barriers persist as obstacles. This investigation underscores the necessity for tailored TPD programs that address these specific challenges, ultimately fostering effective integration of technology into language instruction.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of grammar awareness in students’ writing performance among English Department students. The research aims to explore how students’ awareness and understanding of grammatical structures contribute to the accuracy, coherence, and overall quality of their writing. The study employed a quantitative descriptive method with a correlational design. Data were collected from 40 English Department students through a grammar awareness questionnaire and written essay assessments. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis to examine the relationship between grammar awareness and writing performance. The findings revealed a significant positive correlation between students’ grammar awareness and their writing performance, indicating that students with higher grammatical awareness tend to produce more accurate and cohesive written texts. The results suggest that explicit grammar awareness instruction should be integrated into writing courses to enhance students’ linguistic competence and writing quality. This study highlights the importance of raising students’ awareness of grammar not only as a set of rules but also as a tool for effective communication in academic writing contexts.
