Abstract

This research is expected to know whether there is significant different score of vocabulary test before and after treatment has been given. This research is a quasi-experimental design where the population is Tenth Grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Cipondoh Tangerang. The researcher took sample from X.4 class as control class and X.5 class as experiment class. The sample is 40 students for each class. In collecting the data, the researcher used interview, pretest and posttest of vocabulary and applied peer drilling as a technique in teaching learning process. Furthermore the researcher calculated the data by using t test. In addition the hypothesis test result at the degree of significance 0.05 indicates that in control group H₀ is rejected and H₁ is accepted because t count > t table (4.70 > 1.684) where there is a little significant difference of student’s vocabulary test whereas in experiment class, H₀ is rejected and H₁ is accepted with t count > t table (18.08 > 1.684). It means that there is more significant difference of student’s vocabulary test. In other words, Peer Drilling can improve student’s vocabulary mastery in the classroom.

Abstract

Class dynamics requires development in learning methodologies to cater to the learners' characteristics. Flipped classroom is invented for this purpose with the help of technology. It aims at facilitating students' participation and high-order activities. The research aims to assess the use of flipped classroom in the Department of Family Law (Ahwal Syakhshiyah), Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universitas Islam Indonesia. This research tries to illustrate students’ perspective on the use of flipped classroom in their language classes. Responses written in the reflection sheet indicate that most of the students find the learning method used in their class is enjoyable and the rest finds the method used is moderate. The researchers mainly point out two aspects from the results of the research, flipped classroom enables the students to have control on their own learning; meanwhile, the method creates confusion and culture shock to some students. The respondents were students who took English class in the department as a compulsory subject and the classes conducted in the first semester. There are some points noted for the improvement of flipped classroom in the coming years. First, the teacher needs to make clearer and stricter instructions on how the students use online materials for in-class learning. Secondly, gamification is a good option to maximize the students' comprehension. It can be used as feed forward and feed back in class. Aside from the fact that game is enjoyable, it promotes students' engagement and can also be used as an occasional reflection to monitor students' responses. Finally, an online forum needs to be initiated with the use of Bahasa Indonesia to meet students' level of English usage. There are two points that can contribute to the improvement of flipped classroom in the coming years. Teacher needs to make clearer and stricter instructions on how the students use online materials for in-class learning. Next, gamification is a good option to maximize the students' comprehension.

The results of this study are expected to be a reference for preparing syllabi and developing teaching material.

Abstract

This article interprets Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” using systemic functional grammar analyses (genre, transitivity, mood structure, and thematic structure) and thus implements the view that textual or linguistic justification is crucial for a credible literary reading. The SFG analyses result in the textual symptoms signifying that the short story deals with existential and feminist issues pessimistically that calls for a reexamination of Sartre’s and Beauvoir’s existentialism –especially on the notion of freedom, intentionality, and desire. However, the implementation of SFG itself raises a problem since the interpretation can be achieved without even implementing it in the first place. This research, therefore, highlights the question of the position that linguistic analysis has in literary reading; re-addressing the fundamental philosophical problem on the notion of credibility, objectivity, and methodology. However, the application of SFG is very useful in understanding Kate Chopin’s literary style and the proof of the non-existing line between language use and gender.

Abstract

The study reports the investigation of the effect of Note Taking strategy on reading comprehension at one of Public Vocational High Schools in Banten. The study employs true experimental design with pretest and post test control group design. The findings of the data analysis show that experimental group performed better on reading comprehension than control class. It is proven by the value of the mean of experimental class is 8.00. Meanwhile; the mean of control class is 6.95. The value of the group sig is 0.00 < 0.05, so the Null hypothesis is rejected. It indicates that the Note Taking is greatly affected on reading comprehension. Meanwhile, the value of sex sig is 0.096 > 0.05 means that the null hypothesis is accepted. This means that there is not different of male and female who were taught by using Note Taking Strategy and those who were not taught by using Note Taking Strategy on their reading comprehension achievement.

Abstract

Poetic diction has its own characteristic features and anyone engaged in translation of a poem should have a sufficient understanding. According to Leech (1969), what causes linguistic deviation in translating poetry is that the poet manipulates the general language rules in his poem as a means of creating artistic beauty. Since the form and the meaning in a poem are inseparable, a translator of a poem should do his best to transfer these two aspects as otherwise he/she produces some linguistic deviations in the translation. So far little attention has been paid to linguistic deviations in translation of English poems. This study is intended to investigate such matter by analyzing the linguistic deviations in the translations of the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost. Ten students of sixth semester of English Education Department of Universitas Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya (UWKS) participated in the study. The result of the analysis showed that although the students have passed two obligatory subjects exams, Vocabulary and Structure, both lexical and grammatical deviations are still two most dominant compared to other aspects. Findings also suggest that the subject of Translation should be more intensified and include literary texts in its weekly meetings.

Abstract

Metaphors in cognitive semantics play important roles as phenomena to be understood. Understanding them require elaboration of both semantics and cognition. A news entitled “Katy Perry and Taylor Swift officially bury the hatchet” is an object that is worth studying in the light of cognitive semantics, especially the metaphors employed. The metaphors are compiled and classified into their types.  From the metaphors obtained, the image schemas employed to understand the metaphors are explicated. The discussion on it is attached to the explanation of the metaphorical expressions found in the news. The result shows that there are 11 (eleven) metaphorical expressions with their own classifications noted and different image schemas that background the meaning-making process of the metaphors. Finally, by relying upon the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that there are ways, signified by the implementation of image schemas, to understand metaphors.
