Abstract

Saliva as unique biological components of the oral cavity has potential as a mediator for noninvasivebiological test. For future livestock industry the application of noninvasive test is strongly necessary dueto animal welfare porpuse. Until now the research and development of the using saliva as a mediator forinvasive test is predominant for humans, while for livestock or domestic animals is still limited. Techniquesand methods that are commonly used are related to proteomics analysis. With this method a lot of thingsthat can be brought about proteomics of saliva are beneficial to the development of saliva-based biomarkers.Although this method is expensive, researches on the use of saliva in the field of livestock industries areurgently needed. It is expected that noninvasive biological test methods based on saliva as a mediator canbe performed immediately.

Abstract

There were three kinds of goat developed in Bali since a long time ago i.e. Gembrong goat, EtawahCrossbred goat, and Kacang goat. Gembrong goat is nearly disappearingrecently due to decrease of itspopulation from year to year. The Gembrong goat has very interesting performance, funny, and this speciesis Balinese native goats. The objective of thisexperiment was to know the blood illustration among thethree speciesof the Balinese native goatwhere in the future it can be used as a guide to develop each ofthem. The experiment was used nine adults goats namely three adult male Gembrong goats, three adultmale Etawah Crossbred goats, and three adult male Kacang Goats respectively. The animal fed dailygreen feed grows around them and additional rice bran. Blood samples of the animals were collected forabout10-15 mL each with venoject, and then was kept in a cooler box and subsequently sent to the ProdiaClinic Laboratory at Denpasar. The results of the experiment showed that blood illustration of the threekinds of goat was not significantly different (P > 0.05) except the triglyseride.

Abstract

Malassezia is dimorphic yeast found normally in the animal healthy skin. Malassezia can causehealth problem in pet animals, such as dogs, cats, and other domestic animals. Varies according itsvirulence, Malassezia can cause skin changes characterized by severe pruritus, yellowish erythema andscab, greasy skin, bad odor with hyperpigmentation and lichenification in the face, paws, and neck bottom,as well as belly. Laboratory diagnosis can be performed either by microscopic examination of nativepreparations, or molecular biology. Treatment of Malassezia’s infection can still be made using someantifungals currently available. Malassezia pachydermatitis infection has been known as zoonoticpotential.

Abstract

High Pathogenecity Avian Influenza (HPAI) viruses have high virulence and can frequently causesudden death on birds. The aims of this research was to know the role of Spirulina to a number ofmonocytes and lymphocytes in the blood of chickens which infected with the H5N1 virus. This researchconsisted of three levels of treatment in which each level given Spirulina 0%, 10%, 20% in the fresh wateralgae as drinking water. Each treatment consisted of seven replicates, and the treatment was done sincethe chickens at age 19 until 44 days ( for 25 days). Artificial infection of the chickens with the virus waschallenged by using AI (H5N1) 104 EID 50 (A/Ck/Indonesia/BL/03) with route to the respiratory tract (nosedrops) 0,1 mL starting on day 19. The results showed that there were a significant difference (p<0.05) ontreatment that given Spirulina at doses of 0%, 10% and 20% for the number ofn monocytes, eosinophils, whereas no significant difference (p > 0.05) was observed in basophils.

Abstract

Acehnese people uses Cissus quadrangula (CQ) Salisb stem traditionally for treatment of variousbone disease. can differentiate into many different cell types such as osteoblast, adipocyteand chondrocytes.A study was conducted to determine the potential uses and the optimal dosage of C. quadrangula(CQ)extractin increasing the proliferation and differentiation of Mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrowof rat osteocytes. Mesenchymal stem cells were isolated from femoral and tibial rat bone marrow. Thecells were cultured according to the experimental group consisting of five the treatment groups each ofwhich has 4 replication. The cells were cultured in modified Dulbecco’s modified eagles’s medium (mDMEM).Control were cultured in medium without Cissus quadrangula Salisb stem extract whereas the treatmentgroup were cultured in medium with k 0,1 mg/mL, 0,3 mg/mL, 0,6 mg/mL, dan 0,9 mg/mLCissus quadrangulaSalisb stem extract. The level of the cell proliferation was determined by populationdoubling time (PDT) method. Cell differentiation was determined by counting cells and determining the diameter of osteoblastdan osteocytes. The result showed that CQ stem extract reduced PDT valuesignificantly (P<0,01) ascompared to those of control group. This showed that CQ stem extract increased the rat bone marrow stemcells. The number of h osteoblast in control group were significantly lower than those in CQ stem extracttreatment groups. The highest osteocyte population was observed in 0,3 mg/mL CQ extract treatmentgroup. The CQ stem extract can increase differentiation and proliferation of rat bone marrow masenchymalstem cells into osteoblastand osteocytes with the optimal dose of 0,3 mg/mL.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the carbohydrate content of salivary glands lingual, sublingual, and mandibular glands of water monitor (Varanus salvator). This studywas used the lingualglands, sublingual, and mandibularof an adult male water monitor. Salivary glands were fixed by soakingin a solution of 4% paraformaldehyde for four days. Then, the tissuewas processed into routine histologicalpreparations. Salivary gland tissue was stained with alcianblue staining (AB) pH 2.5 for detecting acidiccarbohydrates and was stained with periodic acid Schiff (PAS) for detecting neutral carbohydrates. Theresults showed that the lingual and sublingual glands showed a positive reaction to AB pH 2.5 stainingand PAS with the intensity varied from weak (+) to strong intensity (+++) scattered in the cytoplasm of thecell. In the cytoplasm of cells of the mandibular glands showed negative reaction (-) to the AB pH 2.5staining but reacted positively to PAS with the intensity varied from weak (+) to strong (+++). Based onthe result of the study it can be concluded that lingual and sublingual glands of Water monitor containacidic and neutral carbohydrates while mandibular glands only contain neutral carbohydrates.

Abstract

Post thawed frozen semen viability is one of the most important keys in artificial inseminationdepended on two major cell death mechanism, apoptosis and necrosis. It has been known that good fertilitydiary bull’s seminal plasma contains high concentration of osteopontin (OPN). Osteopontin also known ascell survival protein via inhibition to apoptotic cell death, and B-cell CLL/Lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2)expressionmostly related to the ability of cell survival. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence ofadditional OPN into frozen semen diluter on post thawed sperm Bcl-2 expression. Fresh semen collectedfrom ±4 year Friesian Holstein bull. Treatment group divided into four groups i.e.: control group (P0:without OPN supplementation), (P1: fresh semen with OPN supplementation 5 ?g/5.107 spermatozoa), (P2:fresh semen with OPN supplementation 10 ?g/5.107 spermatozoa), (P3: fresh semen with OPNsupplementation 20 ?g/5.107spermatozoa). Bcl-2 sperm expression was determined usingimunocytochemistry. The result of this study showed that there was no significant difference betweengroup P0 and P1 (p>0,05), but both group P2 and group P3 showed a significant difference with P0 (p<0,05).Nevertheless, there was no significant difference between group P2to group P3 on post thawed FriesianHolstein sperm Bcl-2 expression (p>0,05). The conclusion of this study is osteopontin supplement in frozensemen diluter is capable to increase post thawed Friesian Holstein sperm Bcl-2 expression.

Abstract

Study to examine the growth of local breed pigs and Verenigde Deutsch Lanvarken(VDL) pigssupplemented with Corypha gebanga pith and maize have been conducted for 14 weeks. A total of 32neutered pigs (16 local breed and 16 VDL pigs) were used in the study. The average initial live weight was8.0 kg for the local breed and 12.1 kg for VDL pigs. Four feeding treatments were applied: T1-60% C.gebanga+15% maize; T2- 65% C.gebanga + 10% maize; T3-70% C.gebanga + 5% maize; and T4- 75% C.gebanga + nomaize, respectively. Live weights and feed consumption were analyzed using repeated measures, analysisof variance. The results showed that feed supplemented with different composition of C.gebanga andmaizehad no effect towards the growth of local breed pigs. However, this phenomenon was not seen in VDLpigs. The growth of VDL pigs supplemented with 75% was significantly lower (P<0.01) compared to thelocal breed pigs. It can be concluded that substitution of maize with C.gebanga has no influence towardsthe growth of local breed pigs. However, its effects on the growth of VDL pigs need further observation.
