Abstract

English Environment Programs is one of method In Improving Speaking Ability At Polytechnic of National Informatics. This research aims at finding out wheather or not the use of English environment Programs improve the speaking ability. This research used Quasy experimental method with two group pre-test and post-test design. The result of the data analysis showed that the degree of freedom (df) was 43 (n1 + n2 – 2) where n1 = 30 and n2 = 15 so 30 + 15 – 2 = 43), the level of significant (α) = 0.05, the t-test value of students’ speaking ability= 3.765, and the t-table value = 2.021. The t-test value is greater than the t-table value (3.765 > 2.021), this showed that there is a significant difference of improvement between the Control group and Experimental Group. It means that the Alternative Hypothesis (H1) is accepted while the Null Hypothesis (H0) rejected. Based on the result above, the researcher concluded that the using of English Environment Programs can improve the speaking ability of the second year students of Polytechnic of National Informatics

Abstract

This article is a literature review that discusses the semiotic approach to the study of literature.The discussion starts with notions about literature in general that say that literature is a work ofart that uses the medium of language and tells about life. However, as noted by some experts, oneof them is Eagleton, the use of language in literature often alienated or is not like its use ineveryday life. Based on such understanding, the explanation is done from a structural approachthat emphasizes the linguistic analysis, and ended with the discussion of Jakobson‟s poeticfunction of the language, which, at the same time, opens the talk about semiotic approach. Poeticfunction can be regarded as a bridge between linguistic analysis and aspects beyond language,such as emotion, psychology, ideology, etc, which plays an important role in the formation oflinguistic expression. Those aspects can then be analyzed more deeply with semiotic approach,because semiotics is the study of signs within social and cultural phenomena.Key words: literature, language, poetic function, semiotics

Abstract

This paper addresses about philosophy, culture, and literature from a historical perspective. Philosophy is one of the discipline in which some interrelated disciplines of the world derive, such as education. Philosophy is concerned with how human think but not all thingking processes constitute philosophy. Indulging in philosophy implies deep and serious thingking. Cultural philosophy has uniqueness because some of its explanation involves other interrelated disciplines, such as historical philosophy, anthropology, sociology, and psychology. Cultural philosophy attempts to explain cultural element and their underlying rules, structures, and their accompanying values. Despite its emergence in the twentieth century, it has rooted since Socratic era even before. Culture is men’s product during his life that does not stop there. When a culture of human being ceases to develop at certain point, it will become a civilization. Contemporary culture is influenced by rapid development and modern man is well aware of it. Culture constitutes a literary work of an individual and the object of a literary work concerns culture and social life of a community. Abstract

Judul skripsi ini adalah Petualangan Tokoh Baldassare dalam Roman Le Pèriple de Baldassare KaryaAmin Maalouf dengan menggunakan Struktur Aktansial dari Greimas. Penulis menggunakan teori iniuntuk menggambarkan petualangan-petualangan yang dilakukan oleh Baldassare dari awal hingga akhir.Penelitian ini menggunakan teori dari Algirdas Julian Greimas yaitu struktur aktansial dan strukturfungsional. Pada struktur aktansial terdapat 6 aktan yang dibuat dalam bentuk skema, yaitu Pengirim,Penerima, Subjek, Objek, Penolong dan Penghalang. Adapun pada struktur fungsional terdapat 3 tahapyang dibuat dalam bentuk tabel, yaitu Situasi Awal, Tahap Transformasi yang dibagi 3 menjadi Tahap UjiKecakapan, Tahap Utama, Tahap Kegemilangan, serta Situasi Akhir.Hasil dari penelitian yang dilakukan adalah berhasilnya Baldassare mendapatkan apa yang diinginkannyadengan sebuah perjuangan dan usaha keras, dengan membuat tujuh skema struktur aktansial dan strukturfungsional. Selain itu, dapat juga disimpulkan bahwa tema yang didapatkan dari hasil penelitian ini adalahtema kegigihan.

Abstract

The title of this research is “Character and the Cultural setting in La Saison de L’Ombre”. The mainobjective of the research is to idenify and to describe the cultural setting of the novel. The descriptivemethod is applied by means of basic structural theory including setting., character andcharacterisation. The working of the analysis followed the research sequence as follows. The first stepis to identify the social setting and social or cultural from Mulongo clan, Bwele and Bebayadi. Thesecond step will be focused on the identification and the description of the characters in every clan.The third and the final step is to describe the impact of setting on the character’s behaviour andaction. This research has found that the setting had influence on the character’s action and behaviour,The setting has classified and opposed the clan of Mulongo in the mystical belief side and The Bweleand he Bebayedi’s clan in the other side who do not have faith t all in such mystical things.Key words: cultual setting, impact, mystical

Abstract

This writing aims to transfer Buginese Elong ‗song‘ into English and to reveal the meanings thatcontained in buginese traditional song entitles Buang Tassanra Mua ‗Fall down but Safe‘. Thissong is very interesting to be analyzed and to reveal deeply either its explicit or implicitmeanings because it has many meanings that must be known not only buginese but also the otherethnics in Indonesia and abroad, even also all generations outside or at schools and university.By revealing the meanings explicitly or implicitly of the song, a person could aware that theancestor‘s advices are very important to implement in his/her daily life. All generations shouldknow, keep, and put them in their mind in order to become a guidance to do good things and toavoid to do bad actions such as breaking the buginese ade ‗customs‘, bicara ‗laws‘, rapang‗ruls‘ and wari‟ ‗etics‘.The objective of Elong ‗song‘ is as not only a medium of entertainment solely but it could alsobe a medium of conveying some advices and it could be a medium of teaching language andlingua franca as well as teaching literature. Lectures and teachers have a must to transfer thebuginese songs into English with the goal the foreigners could read and know the buginese locallanguage and literature, especially buginese pappaseng ‗local wisdom‘ that contained in thissong – buginese language and literature.Key words: Buginese Elong, language, and literature.

Abstract

Political speech is often being a topic of research in linguistic. Some of interdisciplinary studies appeared while the role of the language has developed. They are pragmatics, critical discourse analysis, phsycholingustics, neurolinguistics and sociolinguistics. This research focused on the transitivity system and ideology in Donald Trump Speech Campaign. Transitivity System that stated by Halliday become a tool to analyze the linguistic data which this theory has been used by Fairchlough in his critical discourse analysis. Based on the aims of this research that described transitivity system and ideology of Donald Trump speech campaign, therefore this research called descriptive research. Method of collecting data is method of seeing and noted technique. Technique purposive sampling is used in this research. The result showed that there are six types of process is used by Donald Trump to represent his experience, those are material process, relational process, mental process, verbal process, behavioral process, existential process. Material process is mostly used by Donald Trump followed by relational process and then mental process. To show his ideas, Donald Trump used material process mostly and showed his principal that better do action than only talk. To draw attention of US society and influenced their thought, Donald Trump is often used rasism issue in his speech campaign such as limit the access of immigrant in working and list the muslims US in separated database. Beside that, some of his statements showed that he is a narsistic. He showed his love and proud of himself mostly and he has protectionism in economy.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the function of humor by taking the Astérix comics as a data source. In a comic, thereare many elements of humor usually obtained through word or image games. And those elements will be analyzedand be explained through linguistic approach to determine the role the humor plays in a comic.This study uses semantic and phonology approach to analyze the data. The results showed that the type of wordgames with the highest frequency of occurrence is polysemy which are included in semantic theory. Based on thestudy, the function of word games is to add an element of humor that can make a person feel comforted. This isevidenced by the statement of the experts in linguistics that humor can be approach by semantics and pragmatics.Keyword : word games, humor, functions.

Abstract

This paper will discuss the study of iconity by pictures presenting the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). Various iconities of the AEC pictures emerged, particularly in the virtual world (online) as a form of community support of ASEAN on the establishment of the ASEAN Economic community.Based on the semiotic study, the ASEAN Economic Community presented an iconity of bhinneka tunggal ika, which is togetherness and unity in the field of economic cooperation that comes from ASEAN countries against the background of different cultures and different languages. However, the discourse that emerges is of impending competition among the ASEAN members in the fields of trade and services. The hypothesis of the paper is that economic and cultural integration in ASEAN Economic Community has limited iconity. Key words: iconity, semiotic, culture, representation

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the symmetry extension that can be observed in the use of the domain literature (a piece theater). This study was analyzed using structuralism approach (the intrinsic elements of theater and the technical presentation story within a story – “frame story”). Furthermore, the interpretation of the image of the French family (intergenerational today) and the interpretation of the words, actions, setting and other is then adapted to the symmetry model. Finally, the idea of symmetry that explain their influence the presentation of the literary work. The results of the research is to know that the symmetry is used to advance the things aligned, balanced and orderly, so that the work is in accordance with the concept of the primordial beauty of the west. As something that is wrapped by the beauty will interest faster for people to know more about what is contained in it.
